What's more intimidating?
Having to tell your mother-in-law that her pot roast is actually pretty dry or buying a fly rod all on your own?
Whether you're at the fly shop or browsing online, you've probably run to the same problem we all do.
There's a million rods lined up on the wall with little to no information about why some of them are a thousand dollars and which one is actually going to meet your specific needs.
Today on Untangled, you're gonna get all the need to know information about fly rods so you can make a great decision when you gotta go pick up a new one.
From learning about all the differences between length and line weights to the rods that I personally recommend, you're gonna end this episode with only your mother in law's pot roast to deal with.
This is Untangled, fly fishing for everyone, presented by Ventures Fly Co.
Hey, everybody.
Welcome to it.
This is Untangled, and I am your host, Spencer Durant.
I am more excited to be here right now than I was to be at Rocky Mountain Wing Shack last night.
And those of you who are longtime listeners of the show know that I love wings, but I love fly rods even more.
So I'm really excited that I get to spend the time with y'all chatting rods today.
And if I'm not careful, I'd go on for hours and hours and hours.
So hopefully, I don't do that.
Don't talk y'all's ear off too much.
And I do hope that by the end of this, you feel like you've got the knowledge you need to go out and pick a fly rod that is going to meet your needs.
Because at the end of the day, that's what all this information should do.
It should make the world of fly rods seem like something that's accessible instead of something that's arcane and mystic and guarded by, I was gonna say, wizards and cloaks, but it's just fly shop employees.
So let's try and peel that back a little bit.
And I'm gonna start with just some general overview of fly rods, and then we'll get into the nitty gritty details as we move into this thing.
So I think let's start with talking about how most fly rods that are released and that you're gonna find for sale, whether it's at the fly shop or online, they are built in these little rod families.
And that's just like an entire lineup of the same model.
Kinda like when you go to the car dealer and you've got that lineup of Tacomas right there, and there's the base model and then the TRD off road and the TRD sport and then the fancy hybrid one and then all the way up to I think it's the limited is the high end trim.
They're all Tacomas, but they all got something that's a little bit different about them, and fly rods are the same thing.
But just like when you go to the the truck lot and you're looking at trucks, it's really not immediately clear what the differences are between all of these things except the price.
And, you know, maybe one of them's got fancier wheels.
The other, you can see some of that stuff, but it's not immediately obvious.
好的。
Okay.
What is what's the difference between all of these?
They're they're all just a truck.
They're all just fly rods.
And even if you've been doing this for a while, right, you you go up and you look and you find a nine foot five weight and an eight and a half foot four weight from the same rod family, same rod maker on the wall next to each other.
But beyond the obvious difference that one's shorter and a lighter line weight, you still don't really know, like, k.
What's this one designed for?
What's this one designed for?
Is this going to meet my needs as an angler who lives and fishes in the Rockies or somewhere in the Driftless or somewhere out East?
We all have different needs for our fisheries.
So the key to actually understanding this and decoding all this information really comes down to defining a few different terms and making sure that you know how they impact the experience you're gonna have on the water.
And those terms are gonna be rod length, rod action, and then line weight.
So we'll start off with rod length.
Most fly rods are nine feet long, and that's just been settled on as sort of the best length that gives you a good combination between reach and accuracy.
Because the shorter a rod is, they're actually gonna be a bit more accurate.
So your seven, seven and a half foot, eight foot, eight and a half foot rods, those are inherently gonna be more accurate than a nine, nine and a half, or a 10 footer because there's less material in the rod, so there's less that the rod can move side to side.
We call this torsional stability.
And when you're making a fly cast, if that rod blank is moving side to side, it wobbles a lot, that is gonna throw off the accuracy of your fly cast.
So, yes, accuracy depends a lot on you as the angler, whether you're casting correctly and and using the the right mechanics.
But it also depends on whether the rod is actually stable enough, has that good torsional stability, it doesn't wobble side to side.
And the longer a rod is, the more it's gonna move side to side.
Even the nicest, fanciest, latest, and greatest, they're still gonna move a little bit side to side.
Just inherent.
Shorter the rod is, the less side to side movement you're gonna get, the more accurate cast you're gonna end up with.
And that's why, again, we settle on nine feet as sort of the do it all length because it gives you some reach.
You can pick the line up.
You can mend it.
You can high stick.
You can dead drift.
You can reach over seams, but then you're still accurate when you need to punch out to longer distances.
You look at shorter rods like an eight, eight and a half loader.
Those are gonna limit your reach, but they're gonna increase your accuracy.
So that's something that I would pick up for more of the dry fly fishing.
If you you really need to be accurate, you're not really worried about, you know, picking pockets apart.
You're you're on a big spring creek or a big freestone or you're casting to fish that are they're rising in rhythm.
Maybe a shorter rod's gonna help you out at that point.
So that's what rod length is all about.
The longer the rod, the more reach you get, but you trade off the accuracy.
The shorter the rod, more accurate it is, but you gain or you lose some of the reach.
Next thing to talk about is going to be rod action.
And this just tells you how much of the rod bends during the cast and what that rod is really designed to do.
So fast action rods, they are generally designed to excel with heavier lines, heavier flies.
That's really where they do a lot of the heavy lifting.
Slower action rods, they are going to do best with lighter lines and smaller flies.
And then just to define that as well, a fast action rod is going to bend in, like, the top third of the rod.
So from the tip down to about the top third, that's gonna bend during the cast.
Medium action's gonna bend from the tip down to the middle of the rod, and then slow action's gonna bend from the tip all the way down to the cork.
And fast action rods have got a bit more power.
They've got a bit more backbone to them, but a lot of those fast action sticks, you kinda lose a little bit of the sensitivity.
You lose a little bit of the feel.
So it's harder and I I've seen this with a lot of the beginners that I've had the chance to guide.
And then folks here at VFC, that's why the rod we recommend everyone get is a medium action nine foot five weight to start because that medium action lets you feel the casting rhythm and lets you learn what it feels like when, oh, it's time to move my back cast forward.
It's time to move my forward cast backward.
Because, yes, you can sit there and watch your loops unfurl and straighten out, but a lot of it comes down to feel and developing the timing and learning what the load and unload of the rod feels like.
And a rod that's sensitive enough to give you that information really helps that learning curve just be be less steep at the at the at the beginning with the fly rod.
So that's why we recommend, you know, medium casting action because you go up to a faster rod, and you're not necessarily going to be able to develop the best casting mechanics right out of the bat.
It's a little bit tougher.
Okay?
And then you go to a slower rod, and it's also kinda tougher because the timing on a slower rod is a little bit challenging to get used to.
That medium action, a really good middle ground for learning, and then it will do still some of the bigger stuff, but it will also do some of the smaller dry flies as well.
And this is all general.
We talk faster rods for bigger flies like big nymph rigs, streamers, big hopper dropper setups, slower rods for single dry flies and small dry dropper rigs.
Some folks actually prefer a slower rod for bigger flies, though.
So it really does come down to what you like the most, what you enjoy casting.
But generally, that's what rod action means and how it's gonna inform which rod you end up picking.
And then the last thing that we gotta talk about is line weight.
And this is just the size of line that your fly rod is built to cast.
And this ranges from zero weight, which is the lightest, to 14 weight, which is the heaviest.
And the lighter the line weight, the smaller the fly that design that fly line is designed to cast.
The heavier and heavier you go up, the bigger and bigger flies that line will handle.
Five weights, we sell and by we, I mean the whole fly rod industry.
I read somewhere, like, 70% of fly rods sold are some kind of five weight because it's just a good do it all weight.
It can handle a wide variety of flies.
It can do small streamers.
It can do a lot of dry flies and nymphs.
It can do some heavier nymph rigs.
It's just a good do it all line size that can handle a lot of that.
But if you wanna really dial in a dry fly rig, you're gonna look at maybe going to a four weight.
It's a little bit lighter.
It's designed really to handle those smaller dry flies.
You wanna do a dedicated streamer rig, bump up to a seven or an eight weight.
It's something that's really gonna handle those bigger flies.
And then, obviously, as you go up higher in line weight, you're gonna end up with rods that are a little bit stiffer, designed for for bigger fish at the end of the day.
So that that's all part of how this meshes together.
So we got all this information.
How do we actually make sense out of it?
How do we use this to be helpful when we're picking out a new fly rod?
Because we're still in the fly shop, still a little overwhelmed.
We know a bit, but what does it look like when this comes together?
Let's run through a couple of scenarios so you can see how this info starts to get applied to actual real life situations.
If you are primarily fishing medium sized rivers for trout and you wanna be able to fish your standard sized flies, dry flies, nymphs, dry droppers, maybe some small streamers, like in the size ten, maybe down to an eight range, and you wanna be able, again, to have that versatility to do dry flies and nymphs, then based on everything we know, you're probably gonna want a nine foot rod.
K?
It's gonna give you the good amount of reach, but you're still gonna have accuracy.
You're also gonna probably want a five, maybe a six weight line, but I would probably air on five because it's a little bit better for those smaller dry flies.
Because again, remember, the smaller your line weight goes, the more effective, excuse me, the more effective that rod's gonna be for dry flies because that line has less mass.
It's gonna hit the water more softly.
It's gonna roll your leaders out more softly.
It's gonna help present those dry flies as delicately and as lifelike as possible.
So I always kinda air a little bit lighter.
I love dry fly fishing, so that's why I personally do that.
If you don't plan on fishing really tiny dry flies and you think your smallest dry that you're gonna get into is maybe a size fourteen caddies or something like that, a six weight might be a really good step up.
It'll help you, you know, fight the wind better.
You can turn over some bigger flies and streamers with it.
You can even mess around with some bass on a six weight.
I personally like bumping up to a seven if I'm gonna do a lot of bass fishing, but you can you can get it done on a six.
So there's all those little trade offs you gotta make.
But if that's what you are doing, that kind of general trout fishing that a lot of us do in this sport, then nine foot five weight makes a ton of sense.
That that really is based on everything we know.
That's the rod that's gonna work for us.
But what if we're gonna go after bass, and we're gonna fish primarily bass in lakes?
Maybe we even got a river that there's some smallmouth in.
We can we get some smallies on poppers in the current, which I haven't ever done that.
That's on my bucket list of trips I wanna do because it looks like so much fun to have smallies just crushing flies in a big river like that.
So let's say that's part of your plan.
And maybe you think, yeah.
I'm gonna I'm gonna throw some sync tip line as well.
I wanna get these flies down deep, you know, fish some streamers near some structure, try and lure that big largemouth out.
At that point, five weight's really not a good choice anymore.
K?
You're probably looking at a six or a seven weight, maybe bumping up even more.
But what about length?
What about action?
What's really gonna help you there?
Well, to help answer that and to really take those more complex situations where you're not doing stuff that's that's just the average, you're getting a little bit more specialized, you really wanna dial your rig and get that put together, we've actually created this free fly rod finder.
It's a little questionnaire that you fill out.
You tell it where you fish, what you're fishing for, how you wanna fish, and it's gonna match you with the exact right style of rod from length, line weight, and action to your exact fishing needs.
It's completely free.
It's just a little tool we came up with to really simplify this situation and help you help you not feel so overwhelmed at picking a rod.
Because then you fill this finder out and you know a little bit of what you want.
You know enough to answer the questions, and then boom.
It says, hey.
This is what you should get.
This is gonna match your style of fishing the best.
So if you wanna take a look at that fly rod finder, there's a link down in the show notes, or I will throw a QR code here on the screen if you're watching the video podcast as well.
You wanna take a look at it.
It's been a really helpful tool.
A lot of folks have really enjoyed using it.
So that's that's the bulk of the actual details about fly rods, kinda what separates them from one another.
But now we gotta talk about the one thing that I hate talking about this, and that's the price of fly rods because no one's ever gonna agree with somebody else's take on it, I think, because price is so subjective.
K?
Some people, they aren't going to bat an eye at dropping a thousand dollars on a fly rod.
It's just that's cost to do a business.
Other people wouldn't spend a thousand dollars on a fly rod ever even if they had the money.
It's kind of a principle thing.
They're they're not gonna do it.
Nobody's approach is wrong.
Nobody's right or wrong here.
I want that right out of the gate.
The only thing I'm gonna do is is try and give you some some context so you understand the pricing a little bit.
K?
And this is also coming from I've had the opportunity over the last it's been more than a decade now.
I've reviewed a lot of fly rods, probably probably pushing 60 now.
I I think I've reviewed more fly rods than I have buffalo wing joints, which, you know, that's a whole other venture we'll talk about later.
But I've had the opportunity to fish really expensive rods that I'd never would have been able to buy myself.
They're you know, I've fished with people and in places that are so far out of my tax bracket that you you can't even see it from there.
Been very lucky, very blessed to have those opportunities, and some of those really nice fly rods were really nice.
They were all sorts of bougie.
They I almost felt fancy fishing them.
Some of them honestly kinda sucked, and I didn't like them.
Some of them were pretty underwhelming.
And really what it comes down to when you're completely honest, k, here's someone who's fished expensive and cheap stuff.
What's the big difference between them?
Well, first and foremost, it's gonna be branding.
K?
Some companies are gonna charge more because of who they That's the world we live in.
Like it or not, that's reality.
You don't have to participate in it, but it's reality.
K?
They're also gonna charge more because of the materials and the technology used to make those fly rods.
So the really expensive ones, these are the rods that are built by rod engineers making significant amount of money to figure out how to make a rod as torsionally stable as possible, how to use this new graphite and this new resin to make a rod that's fast but has some feel to it.
They're doing a lot of really cool stuff, and a lot of these guys are are innovating and pushing the envelope.
And that works out well for us because eventually that tech trickles down to the budget rods, And that's why the rods that are in the budget category right now, the best budget rods ever, because we've had so much innovation in the last twenty or thirty years that that really good tech is affordable now.
But that that's part of it.
The tech, that's gonna cost you some money.
And then they're gonna use, you know, really fancy cork, exotic wood for the real seat inserts.
They're gonna use ultralight hardware, all that fancy stuff to really dress the rod up, make it look as bougie as possible.
And you're gonna pay a premium for that just like you would for premium trim on a truck.
K?
Go back to our Tacoma example from earlier in the show.
Is there really that much of a difference between the Tacoma and the limited trim that's, like, $70 versus the base model s r five?
They're both trucks.
They both got four wheel drive.
And in some cases, that base model's actually got a better rear axle gear ratio that makes it way more adept climbing really steep off road tracks.
And I know that because I had a base model, the four twelve, and all the others had three ninety threes or three eighty threes in the rears.
So if you're a car person, you'll understand that.
But point being, sometimes those cheaper stuff do certain things better than the expensive rods.
K?
So that that's really what it comes down to with the price.
K?
If you want the latest and greatest and you're the kind of person who wants the absolute best, go ahead and buy it.
Nothing wrong with that approach.
If you're the kind of person who doesn't, nothing wrong with that approach either.
There are performance differences you're gonna see.
You you will see that.
The biggest difference that I see between the cheap and the expensive rods is how light they are.
K?
The the expensive rods are really, really light.
You almost don't even feel like you got a fly rod in your hand, and they're very they're very powerful.
I I would also say they they pack quite a bit of a punch, They don't do it in a way that feels like you're casting a broomstick.
So so they do have they do have a little bit of performance going for them.
But at the same same side of that coin is you aren't going to be a magically better angler, better caster if you buy that expensive stick.
You still have to know how to use it.
K?
It's like giving a 16 year old keys to a Lamborghini instead of the Camry.
K?
Does he know how to drive the Lamborghini?
Does he know how to get the most out of it?
He's gonna look really cool doing it.
K?
Everyone at school is gonna wanna be his friend, and he's probably gonna get in some trouble with it.
Kid in the Camry, still gonna get point a, point b, just the same as a kid in the Lamborghini.
In fact, kid in the Camry is probably not gonna crash or get a ticket.
Kid in the Lamborghini, you know, who knows what's gonna happen to him?
So it it really is that same sorta sorta way to look at it.
But, really, just figure out what budget you wanna spend, how much cash you wanna drop on a rod, and spend that.
K?
My personal two cents, if I was gonna buy a rod right now instead of using the rods that we have here at VFC, I would be looking to spend at least $200.
Because in my experience, the rods below that $200 price point, some of them can be really good.
Some of my favorite rods I've ever fished were a $180.
But I've also fished a lot of clunkers, a lot that were not torsionally stable, that were really heavy, that didn't have feel, that really were an impediment to learning how to cast and to enjoying fly fishing.
K?
There the gamble on whether it's a good rod or not below $200 is pretty high.
But once you hit 200, in my experience, that's where things really start to turn.
You see better rods and consistently better rods that are light.
They're torsionally stable.
They're sensitive so you can feel your casting.
They're they're gonna work for you.
That's, again, my experience.
I'm not telling you that this is what you gotta do.
Just my experience over a decade plus of reviewing and fishing rods, I would be spending my cash at about that 200 price point and then up.
I'd probably be spending a little bit more than that because I'm I'm one of those people I like to buy once, cry once, and I want a rod that's gonna grow with me, that it's gonna last, kinda be an heirloom type thing I could pass down to my kids.
That that's just my how I approach a lot of the gear that I buy personally.
So that's what I'd be be looking at if I was buying rods.
But speaking of those VFC rods, the rods we have here, we actually just it was a few weeks ago.
We just finally finished up building.
We got our last shipment of the tubes in, but we've got three brand new fly rods here at VFC.
And they're following the same ethos as all the other gear, right, where we tried to make rods that that made the rod selection process simpler so that you're actually getting what you need to to accomplish your goals on the water.
You're not just going to the fly shop and handing over your credit card and hoping for the best because we've all been there, and it's a kind of a scary place to be.
You're gonna spend a lot of money, and you're you're not sure, like, is this really what I need, or is this guy just getting a big commission on it?
You know?
So we really thought through how do we simplify it?
How do we make this, you know, like our starter packs or our flight collections or our three packs?
How do we make this easy to figure out and and simple and then still really functional and and still really usable for for any level of angler?
And we ended up just designing rods that are built around a single purpose so that you once you decide, yeah, I wanna build out my drive fly setup, or you know what?
It's time for a more upgraded maybe a little faster.
Maybe I want a a five way that's got a bit more oomph to it, or maybe I want a streamer stick.
That that's that's what we really tried to to build these around.
So I'll just give you an example.
Our riser, it's our eight and a half foot four weight.
So automatically, you can tell that's shorter, so it's gonna be a bit more accurate.
Four weight, lighter line, So that's our dry fly rod.
That's the stick we built to give you a good dry fly experience.
Some smaller dry dropper stuff, but really tuned in for fish and dry flies.
And then you go to the Fly Flinger Pro, and we put this one together as the sort of fast action upgraded version of the Fly Flinger, which we've really I I've been fishing the Pro a ton, and it's probably my second favorite rod right now.
I'll tell you my first favorite in a minute.
But it it's just a little bit faster, so it's gonna handle the wind better.
Bit more torsionally stable, so it's gonna be a bit more accurate.
But I I really like it's got a bit more lifting power, so you can really turn and move fish when you need to.
And then it does handle, you know, bigger rigs a little bit better because it's a little faster action rod.
So that's the Fly Flinger Pro.
And then we went with the Bug Bomber, which is our nine foot six weight.
And that's, you know, nine foot.
好。
K.
We're we're trying to reach out there six weight, bigger flies.
Sink tips, streamers, big hopper dropper rigs, big nymph rigs.
Try to put all that together.
And again, the whole goal was, what are you trying to do?
Well, here's the solution to what you're trying to do.
And, that that simplifies the process quite a bit.
We do give all these rods away.
They've got two tips.
Well, we don't give them.
We sell them.
But we we give you two tip sections.
So if you break a tip section, you don't have to quit fishing.
And then they do come with our VFC warranty, which is if there's a manufacturing defect, we will get you taken care of.
It's not gonna cost you anything.
We will get you a new rod and get you squared away as soon as we can.
If you break the rod, if you slam in a car door, if you get really mad and you chuck it out into the middle of the lake, if you try to play, like, swords with it or something with your buddies or if your kids try to do that, whatever it is that happens, if you break the rod, we'll replace that broken section for a flat fee, and we try to ship those broken sections out within, like, one to two business days so you're not waiting forever.
Don't You have to send it to us.
Just gotta let us know, hey.
I broke the third section of the rod.
We'll get you taken care of.
But that's the VFC warranty that we've got with the rods as well.
So I will link the rods down in the show notes or here on the screen in the QR code.
If you wanna take a look at what we've done and, again, the whole goal was how can we we make the fly rod selection process easier so you don't feel overwhelmed?
You've got all this information, and now you know, yeah, this is what I want.
Boom.
Here's a rod that matches it.
You're not picking through 18 different rods in one family.
You're trying to decide it.
It's just boom.
Here's your dry fly rod.
Here's your streamer rod.
Hopefully, it's simple.
Then I know I said, Fly Flinger Pro is my second favorite rod right now.
My first favorite, Alex and I actually just got back from a little trip.
We went up to Canada to fish for lake trout and pike, and we took some prototypes with us.
We took a seven weight and an eight weight.
And the eight weight that we took with us, oh, boy.
I love I I'm not gonna use it as much as the Fly Flinger Pro, but that thing was so much fun.
I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed fishing that rod.
I actually took one of my older eight weights that was thousand dollar fly rod that I got to review years ago, and I fished that next to this prototype eight weight.
I think I like the new one a little bit better.
I'm not gonna lie.
It was pretty fun.
So those will be we'll hopefully be dropping those soon.
I'm not sure sure when.
But, again, hopefully, this is helpful for you guys.
Hopefully, we answered a lot of fly rod questions.
If you've got any more, don't hesitate.
Drop those down in the comments.
Let us know.
I'd love to help you out even more.
But with that, we are gonna move on to the q and a portion of this week's episode because every week here at Untangled, we spend half the show directly answering your questions.
So if you've got a fly fishing question that you would like answered, there's a link to send those in down in the show notes or right here on the screen if you're watching the video podcast.
Ron from South Carolina has our first question, writes in and says, Spencer, I love everything about Ventures Fly Co.
Thank you all for an awesome entry into fly fishing.
Love your products, tutorials, and podcasts.
Here's my question.
I was amused by your recent support of Trout Routes, the app.
I use it and think it is very useful.
That being said, have you used AI platforms such as ChatGPT to research fishing opportunities?
What are your thoughts on AI and trout fishing?
Ron, thanks for the kind words.
Appreciate it, man.
This is a pretty interesting question.
For anyone wondering about the Trout Routes app that Ron was mentioning our support of it, I did a show month month and a half ago now talking about how I was wrong about fly fishing apps, how I I used to hate them.
I used to just be anti app.
And earlier this year, had the chance to actually meet some of the TROUTROUTES guys and use their app, which I'd never used it.
I hated on it forever, and I never used it.
Actually used it, and there was no social media component to it.
I couldn't hotspot and tell everybody where I was fishing.
It was literally just, here's the boat ramps, here's the public and private land, here is the stream flow data, and then here is what fish are in this stretch of the river.
It was just information that all that information's already online.
It's there.
You just have to bounce between, like, five or six apps to find it or five or six websites to find it all.
So there's nothing secret.
There's nothing new in there.
It's just stuff that already exists, but it's in one place.
And especially the public and private land map, that was really helpful for me, especially living in Wyoming where I've got an I've gotta know where I am because it's my responsibility, and landowners don't have to post their land.
So I've gotta make sure I'm always on public land or I've got permission.
So it was really helpful from that perspective.
And I kinda changed my tune about it.
I said, yeah.
You know, it's it's not the evil I thought it was.
I'm still not like I I was wrong about fly fishing apps.
I still don't know if they're a net positive for the industry because I think I I don't want us to lose the adventure spirit of going out and finding and exploring on our own.
I don't want us to become dependent on apps for that because I think that I think that's just bad in general when we lose that desire to explore into adventure.
But if it's something that's supplemental and helpful, then, you know, go ahead and take a look at it.
And if if you're just curious about Trout Routes at all, they actually do have a deal going for Untangled listeners where you get a free month of the pro access on the app.
You get to see all the features.
So if you want to give that a look and try out that free month, there's a link down in the show notes, or I'll throw a QR code here on the screen.
If you wanna take a look at it and see maybe you'll change your mind as well like I did or maybe you won't.
That's fine.
But if you wanna take a look at it, it's there.
Now as far as the AI part of this question, you know, I'm pretty anti AI these days because I do worry about it coming to life and taking over the world.
I've seen that documentary Terminator.
I know what can happen.
There there's legitimate reasons to be leery of AI, especially on the environmental side, the water consumption, the land consumption, all these data centers going up.
Seems like there's building first and asking questions later.
That's a very troubling development.
So there's a lot of legitimate reasons to look at it and to not like it and not trust it.
You know, with all that being said, I do use it in a very limited capacity day to day, usually just for, you know, organizing, summarizing some of that busy work that used to take a while.
I I I've offloaded some of that onto it.
Not any of the creative stuff, obviously, but just some of the busy work.
And, you know, I use it a lot less than some of my buddies do.
And I've actually never thought about using it to plan a trip either because I know that the information it gets can still be wrong.
And I feel like by the time I put a prompt together that tells me what I want to know, I could have just gone and found the information myself.
So I I still do that, and I'm I'm still pretty stuck in my ways too.
I'm I mean, it took me forever to to adopt texting too.
Like, I I'm pretty stuck in my ways.
You can even ask Alex.
He drives him nuts.
He hates phone calls, and I call him all the time because I hate texting.
So, you know, I'm I'm still kinda that way.
But, you know, I I just I wanna know that I can trust the information, don't have to really verify to go through and dig through things on my own.
You know, if if I ask Chad GPT to give me a a fishermen port for a river that I'm on, and it goes and it find one, but it's from ten years ago and tells me that it's current.
You know, how do I know how do I trust that versus if I go and find it myself?
I I just there's still enough that I'm not trustworthy on it that I'm not necessarily gonna use it that way.
But Alex actually did.
He and his wife went to Iceland for their tenth anniversary, did a little fishing while they were there, and he actually used it to help him plan.
And I've got a note here from him.
He said he planned the trip a little bit.
He said it was very helpful from a logistics perspective on where to stay, how to get to the water, backup plans, but then I still had to go out there and explore, and it didn't cast.
It didn't pick my flies for me.
So in that sense, he found it really helpful to just sort of say, I'm gonna be in this region.
I'm gonna have x amount of time to fish.
What are my options?
This is what I wanna do.
And it apparently worked out well for him.
And and he used to had a really good trip.
So, you know, I personally I don't think I'm ever gonna use AI that much, especially not to plan a fishing trip.
It's just not not what I do.
I I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with it.
I would just say double check the info you get from it to make sure it's correct, especially where land ownership is concerned.
It's always a murky area.
So that's just my 2¢ on it.
But good question.
Thanks for sending it in.
Appreciate it.
Magnus from Norway has our next question, writes in and says, I can catch brown trout on dry fly streamers and even big mouse patterns, but for some reason, I really struggle to catch them on nymphs.
I believe I'm getting my nymphs into the right part of the water column, choosing reasonable patterns, and getting what looks to me like a good dead drift, but I still get almost no takes.
What do you think I might be missing?
Is there a common beginner mistake in nymphing that I may not even realize I'm making, or could I be spooking the fish before my nymph ever reaches them?
Well, Magnus, real simple.
It's all about depth.
You said that you think you're getting to the right part of the water column.
If you're not catching fish, that is a dead giveaway that you're probably not deep enough.
K?
That that is far and away the issue that I saw when I was guiding that we hear from all the new anglers that we have the opportunity to chat with and get to know here at VFC, the new people that we've taught to fish personally, the biggest stumbling block with nymphing is you're not getting those flies deep enough.
And if they're not deep enough, they're not in front of fish.
And if you don't put your flies in front of fish and make them look real, you're gonna have a really hard time catching fish.
It's kinda like going to a a wing convention and asking for boneless wings the whole time.
It's not gonna work out.
People are gonna look at you funny.
Like, what's this what's this clown doing here?
It's bone in or bust, buddy.
So it's the same same not really the same concept.
I just needed another wing joke.
I've got a quota I have to hit, so I I had to squeeze it in there.
I'm sorry.
I I apologize.
But let me give you an example just to illustrate this point even more.
I'm out fishing.
I think it was February this year.
I'm out fishing my buddy, Gene, and my buddy, Scott.
And Scott's a nymphing machine.
Dude dude has that stuff dialed.
He's got it figured out.
And we're in the drift boat.
Gene's rowing.
Scott's in the back.
I'm in the front.
And Scott starts catching big fish right out of the gate.
Puts like a 21 inch rainbow in the net, and then he puts like a 20 inch rainbow in the net.
And then he catches another one.
It wasn't as long, but it was fat.
It was shaped like a football, and I'm getting nothing.
Drifting same water, same flies, nothing.
And I look at his rig for a sec after, like, the third or fourth fish.
It he had two small split shot on his rig.
I didn't have any.
I was just fishing heavy flies, thinking that would get me down deep enough.
So I put two small split shot on my rig.
We drift to the next hole.
砰。
Boom.
I start catching fish.
And the rest of the day, we started trading fish off.
That tiny little adjustment of just a little bit more depth, boom.
That was all I needed, and I was into the fish because they weren't gonna move up.
They weren't going to move and to make the effort to catch or to to eat those flies.
So it was really something that getting them down in front of them made all the difference.
So if you're not catching fish, it's almost certainly because you're not deep enough.
K?
And then Alex, he's got more stories than I do about this.
He's this is his you know, I'm on that I I talk a lot about put flies in front of fish, make them look real.
Like, that's my big thing.
Alex is like, depth is king.
That's his big thing.
And we were out I think it was two winters ago now.
We're out fishing together.
Great time.
And we caught some nice fish, but we hadn't caught anything big.
And it's getting towards the end of the day.
It was February again.
It was starting to get kinda cold.
We knew we were gonna have to leave soon.
And Alex is fishing this little bit of water.
It looked really fishy.
It's this kinda slot out in the middle where there's this rock.
It creates kind of a bucket behind it that dumps off into this this run that was, like, 20 or 30 yards long.
And he was fishing it.
You could just tell there had to be fish in it.
It looked so good, but he wasn't getting any bites.
And he had split shot on.
He had big flies on, but he still didn't feel like he was getting down deep enough.
So what he did is he throws a cast even further above this run and then throws a whole bunch of upstream mends into it.
And what that did is it slowed the rig down and gave time for those flies to drop and be at that depth right as they hit the run.
And as soon as he does that, he makes that tiny little change, gets those flies as deep as he possibly can, he hooks into a legitimate two foot brown trout.
24 inches of golden butter in the middle of February.
One of the prettiest fish I've ever seen.
One of the nicest looking brown trout I've ever seen.
All because he made a tiny depth adjustment.
We're we're talking maybe an inch, and that's all it took, and then that fish ate.
Did he eat a walt's worm, by the way, like a size sixteen?
So what we weren't even fishing big streamers or anything.
Heat a walt's worm, size sixteen.
So depth matters.
K?
Do not overlook that.
Get down deep.
Get all the way to the bottom first.
Put weight on.
Lengthen your rig.
Whatever you gotta do.
And if you're consistently snagging on every single drift, you're too deep.
You wanna be kinda bouncing along the bottom.
You wanna see your indicator ticking.
You wanna catch bottom maybe every six or seven drifts or so.
That tells you you're right down as deep as you need to be.
If you're not ever catching bottom, you're not deep enough.
So that's what I would do.
That's my recommendation, and hopefully it helps.
Thanks a bunch.
Appreciate it.
From Canada has our next question, writes in and says, since switching to barbless hooks, I've noticed I lose a lot of fish during that awkward stage right after the hook set when I have a bunch of line outside the reel that I stripped in during the drift.
When a bigger fish takes off at that point, I'm never sure what the correct technique is.
If I clamp down on the line with my finger, I worry about breaking the fish off.
But if I let the fish run, all that loose stripped line seems to create immediate slack, and I lose it anyway.
Once I get a fish onto the reel, my odds of landing it increase dramatically.
The problem is that I lose the vast majority of bigger fish before I ever reach that point.
What's the proper way to maintain constant pressure when you have a bunch of line outside the reel?
Is there a technique you'd recommend for managing that transition more smoothly?
Thanks again for everything you do.
I've learned a lot from both the podcast and the school community, and I'm looking forward to continuing the journey.
Really good question, man.
Thank you for sending this one in.
I I really love the the clarity that you use to describe this problem because it is a problem that a lot of folks have.
So short of it is you are probably worrying a little bit too much about losing fish when you have your finger clamped down on the line against the cork.
Because if you're fishing four x tippet and you're fishing and catching average sized trout, unless you are clamping that line down on the cork and not letting any line slide through your finger, you're not letting it move at all, and that fish is just violently head shaking, they're probably not gonna break the line.
K?
Even down to five x, they're still probably not gonna break the line.
Where you run into fish breaking off when you clamp down tight is if you're not letting the line go through your fingers at all.
K?
If you just put a little bit of pressure on that line and let it slip through your fingers but still provide some resistance, you're basically functioning as a reel again.
Because the reel's whole job is to hold your line there and look pretty on the rod and then give resistance when you have a fish on.
K?
Give it that drag.
So you wanna try and mimic that same sort of pressure with your finger.
You don't want a death grip on the rod where you're not letting any line out because a 100%, you're gonna break a lot of fish off doing that.
You also don't want it to be too loose because then, like you said, you do lose a lot of fish because you get slack and boom, hook pops out.
But what I like to do is I just press that line tight against the rod, and I let the line slide through my fingers, but not easily.
K?
And and a lot of times, you know, they'll they'll take that initial run.
And if you can just sorta let the line go through your fingers, keep the rod, you know, bent, keep good tension on the line, and then keep a little bit of tension on the line between your finger and the cork, that's gonna be enough to kinda slow that fish down for you.
And then you could start to look at whether you wanna put it on the reel.
Because we also me and Alex, we don't try to go and put the fish on the reel immediately.
One thing that I think is a pretty valuable skill to learn is how to fight fish almost without the reel, k, by, you know, managing the pressure that's on that fly line as you let it go out through your hands.
In fact, I I mentioned we were just in Canada recently, and we had we had the luck to get into some really nice sized fish.
And there were a few of them that were, I mean, the last one I caught was like a 20 inch fish the last day.
Not nothing to sneeze at at all.
And I didn't put him on the reel at all.
I I just stripped it in the whole time because I just had the right amount of tension.
I had a lot of slack out too, so I didn't wanna deal with getting them on the reel.
But I had the right amount of tension, and when he'd make his runs, I'd just let him run, and then I'd just strip line back in.
So it's a valuable skill worth learning.
But sometimes you do need to put them on the reel, especially when they're really big, or if they get into that heavy current, the the reel is gonna help out a ton.
So don't feel like you have to immediately get them on the reel.
That's gotta be priority number one.
K?
You wanna make sure you get that hook set good.
You've got good tension on the line.
And then once you're in a position where the fish is not making a giant run or you're not trying to finagle it away from a snag or, you know, a a broken down tree or whatever in the water, that's when you can start reeling that slack in.
K?
What this looks like for me is, again, I keep tension on the line.
I let that fish run.
And then as the fish is running, if you really want to, you can just start reeling in the slack while the fish is running because you're holding the line in your rock hand.
You've got your free hand to start reeling that slack in.
But, if that fish is trying to get downstream of me, it's trying to bury itself in a snag, I don't mess with the reel.
I just go back to stripping line in, keeping a lot of tension, and trying to steer that fish away away from the snags.
K?
Again, you want your finger to kinda function like another drag at that point.
You don't wanna stop the fish's progress entirely.
You just want to slow it down and tire it out because then, boom, you can go ahead, either get it on the reel or get it into shallow water and get it netted.
So hopefully, that clears that up, and that actually answered the question.
Again, I wouldn't worry too much.
Just don't have a death grip on the line.
Just try and, you know, make the fish work for it, but not to the point where if your rod tip's, like, bouncing a ton and the the line's coming out and kinda, like, fits and starts not moving smoothly, that's probably a sign you've got a little too much tension on it.
I'd loosen it just a little bit.
So hopefully, that helps, man.
Appreciate the question.
And with that, folks, it is time to get into the live real life moment because every week here at Untangled, we end the show by sharing a story and a picture from someone in the VFC audience who is out there living real life.

Writes in and says, howdy.
I just wanted to tell you thank you for the video on how to fly fish, the one with the mother-in-law.
I was recently gifted fly fishing gear from my boss and tried it for the first time.
To get into the thick of it, it was like a buck fever when you get those first couple of strikes.
I was shaking like a cane brick rattler.
I ended up catching three eaters.
This adventure was emotional for me with the loss of my grandpa and father earlier this year.
They taught me everything I know for trout on a regular rod and reel.
Ages ago, they did a lot of fly fishing, and I just wish I had the experience with them.
Growing up and watching them tie their own flies was a memory for the books.
They would be stoked on this catch.
I digress.
Thank you again.
Jesse, it doesn't get better than that, does it?
That's awesome, man.
Congrats.
