What does it really take to level up as a fly angler to go from catching a few fish every time you're on the water to actually feeling confident about what you're doing?
Do you need to become a master fly tyre, an expert on fishing still water?
Do you have to learn all the ins and outs of small creeks and big rivers?
Do you need to decipher the inscriptions on the granite boulders at the Henry's Fork that contain all knowledge about dry fly fishing ever bestowed to man?
Do you need to do all of that and then even more?
Honestly, what you need is time on the water.
That's the best teacher out there so long as you know what you're looking for.
This week on Untangled, we're continuing our Everyday Angler series with my good buddy, Hyrum Weaver.
He's one of the fishiest guys I've ever met.
If there's anyone I trust to help you figure out how to take that next step, it's him.
This is Untangled, fly fishing for everyone.
由Ventures Fly Co.呈现。
Presented by Ventures Fly Co.
Well, hey, everybody.
Welcome to it.
这里是Untangled。
This is Untangled.
I'm your host, Spencer Durant, and I am joined this week by the one and only Hyrum Weaver.
你好。
Hello.
How are you guys?
I'm excited to be here.
I'm super I love this, by the way.
Well, This is freaking dope.
We we've been trying, man.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
I mean, this is kinda like the vision of a really cool studio, man.
So I like it.
Well, I appreciate it.
I think you to be an official flytire though, you need a bunch of feathers and crap all over the floor.
对。
Yeah.
We're working on it at some point.
I I'd stole all the pheasant tails, though.
That's the problem because I needed them.
Well, you know, there's a reason they've been around for over a hundred years.
对。
Yeah.
You know, people people like calf
pheasant It's a good fly.
It's a good fly.
Man.
不。
No.
If you've been a longtime listener of Untangled, I've told a few stories
好的。
Okay.
About Fishing with Hyrum on the podcast.
好的。
Okay.
So like, you later
you know, approved?
I don't think
it was anything embarrassing.
Mostly it's been like, he kicked my butt at Pyramid Lake or the one time he showed me how to do this and he kicked my butt at it.
And the the recurring theme is like, he caught fish and I didn't.
So that's usually and that's usually how it's gone.
Well, I've I've been doing it a little bit longer than most people.
Just a bit.
对。
Yeah.
I've known how long have we known each other now?
Jeez.
It's been probably because it was at EFC.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
Way back in the day.
So we're talking 2014?
2015?
对。
Yeah.
Something like that.
是的。
Yeah.
Somewhere around there.
Eleven, twelve years, something Yeah.
Something like that.
We've been around for a minute Yeah.
And instantly became friends.
对。
Yeah.
You know, I saw that you were when I walked in, I I still remember looking down at your belt and you had a trout belt and I was like
Alright.
You wanna know what's embarrassing?
What's that?
I'm still wearing that belt.
Is it really?
对。
Yeah.
But look how tore up it is.
My wife keeps telling me, you need a new one.
But, like, this one's fine.
Well, it's like when you
get a tarpon, you gotta get a tarpon belt.
Right?
So like I'll I'll
get there eventually.
What's funny is I've never actually worn it, but, you know, I've I went down to The Keys and caught a nice big tarpon on my first trip down, you know, which is super cool, and bought the belt, never worn it.
But I got it.
You need to.
So You need to wear it because I went and got my butt kicked.
So which again, recurring theme anytime I talk with Hyrum.
Well, I've got a heck of a guy down there.
He's like that dude is so fishy.
It's scary.
He smokes like a chimney.
对。
Yeah.
我是说
I mean
One of those dudes.
And I'm talking like in 14 hundreds chimney where that's like the only way to heat your house.
You know I'm Yep.
I mean, the
dude would he was actually my guide up in Montana one time too, and that's how I met him.
And it was on the Madison, the 50 mile Riffle.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
And he was literally lighting the next cigarette with the butt of his last Just
chain smoking like And a son of a
I smell like a bowling alley for like two weeks, no matter how much I share.
But we caught so many fish that day.
We were throwing like triple hopper rigs, you know.
It was bananas.
So Well,
did you have good weather for your tarpon trip?
是的。
Yes.
就是
It
was that's what did us in is it was stormy, it was blowing, it was overcast the whole time.
So you couldn't really see to fish for him.
So that that was what did us in more than anything.
The biggest problem we had was tons of reflection because it was cloudy, and so you couldn't see into the water.
So he could only see into it.
对。
Yep.
And his name is Mike Pollock, heck of a guide.
Anyway, and literally I'd point my rod because he'd say, you know, 03:00, you know, 07:00, 80 feet, 90 feet,
110
a 110
feet, you And type of I would just finally, because his I think his clock was a little off compared to my clock, or maybe my clock was a little off compared to his clock, And I'd just point, and I'd go like this.
And he's like, there.
And I chuck it as hard, you know, whatever distance was needed.
And, yeah, we were just off of the Marquesas when I caught a 110 pound tarp.
That's awesome.
That's the estimate.
I mean, it's it was longer than my arms, and I'm six feet tall.
对。
Yeah.
I used to be in my youth.
对。
Yeah.
But my arms haven't shortened, you know, it's just I've gotten shorter with my back, you know, so Yeah.
I don't have to look up to you as much.
I still do metaphorically, but I don't have to look up literally like I'm You're being kind.
不是。
No.
I'm dead serious, man.
It's there is a shortlist of people.
When we started this Everyday Angler series, there's shortlist people I want on the show.
You were on it because, you know, I we've been out Pyramid Lake together, and I've watched you catch 15 pound trout there.
对。
Mhmm.
And we'll get into this later, but Hyrum also claims he has not been skunked in the twenty first century.
We'll talk about that later.
Well, I think that's a lot more grit and determination than anything else.
But still,
I mean, that's a skill in and of itself.
Right?
Being willing to grind it out.
对。
Mhmm.
And but we we just had a lot of good times together fishing whole bunch.
There was a whole night we got dive bombed by owls in Idaho.
在
On the
way to the Big Lost.
对。
Yeah.
Dude, that was bananas.
I would one of the craziest nights I think I've ever had.
So it's just a lot of good times, and you you know you're fishing.
So I really wanna bring that in.
But Hyrum's not just a fisherman.
He's also dad.
You got three kids.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
I really like two of them.
You know?
And that too does change, you know, based on because two are girls and
对。
Yeah.
You know?
One's always in the doghouse?
Oh, well, kind of.
对。
Yeah.
But he's older now.
不是。
No.
I'm kidding.
不是。
No.
I I love him too.
In fact, I think he's gonna be getting engaged this weekend.
Oh, for him.
So yeah.
Good for him.
That's so good for us too.
对。
Yeah.
Because now he's not your problem anymore.
Like, we moved out last year, but you know, like, makes it a lot easier to be like, sorry, our house isn't big enough for y'all too.
对。
Yeah.
哦。
Oh.
I'm kidding.
我爱
I love
him to death, but
You you don't do fly fishing full time.
That's not your full time gig.
You've guided off and on.
对。
Yeah.
Like, I was a full time guide for a ranch up in Park City before it got sold, you know Yeah.
To the highest bidder during COVID.
And I used to guide for like the Buck Commanders Yep.
You know, whenever they'd come up.
And like, the cool thing about that, and I don't even know if I can use their name, but you know, I think the NDIs are older over now.
Actually, I'm pretty sure because the company was sold.
对。
Yeah.
I used to be a company called Big Dutch Outfitters, and I was their head guide up there.
And so what would happen is, you know, the Buck Commanders would come in and they they hunt in the morning and the evening.
Right?
But all day I had them.
So for like eight hours straight, it was you know, Adam LaRoche is like one of the freaking fishiest dudes.
对。
Yeah.
You know, called him Roachie out there.
He he was amazing.
Ryan Langerhans
Ryan Langerhans was the same way.
Willie
Willie was super cool too, but he just wanted to come down to the trophy pond and catch trophy fish, you know.
And I fished that trophy pond with you a couple That of was I lost a lot of fish.
So once again, recurring theme.
You know, I didn't catch it, but Hyrum did.
对。
Yeah.
You don't wanna be throwing five x there.
That's for sure.
No.
Well, and I that was in my you gotta fish small flies era too, unfortunately.
So But it's funny because I learned how to tie because I couldn't tie like a a fish food fly.
You know what I'm saying?
I called A pellet fly?
Brown beetle, you Like, so put a couple legs on it, made it look modeled enough.
And and Mike Miller, he's he's, a really good dude too.
He Mike Miller, the turkey killer.
Anyway, he was awesome.
So I guided for like five years there during that time frame.
And it wasn't a 100% of the time, but it was in a good majority of the fall every So and I still take out clients, but it's referral only.
对。
Yeah.
And because, you know, the main gig now that's on the side, so I guess it's my main side gig is fly on the fly.
是的。
Yep.
You know?
And so we do like fly fishing apparel and that type of thing.
对。
Yeah.
And you just brought me I mean, you just brought me this beautiful new hat and we'll have the camera zoom in on this.
But gorgeous looking hat and, you know, obviously, I need a replacement because this thing is dirtier than sin.
It's almost like I built wall or something.
Right?
Did something in it.
So yeah, you got great hats.
You got sun shirts over there too.
是的。
Yeah.
Sun shirts and and what's crazy is the leggings.
Girls and guys both like the leggings.
My wife does most of the designs on everything.
I I design the hats mainly.
She just helps me out a little bit.
对。
Yeah.
And yeah, we're an e commerce brand, but we also do fly fishing shows in the spring.
对。
Yeah.
继续。
Go
on.
Like the Wasatch fly fishing and tying show, and and there are so many good people there.
是的。
Yeah.
Like getting into it, you're you'd think, you know, because fly fishing sometimes has that feeling that everybody's know it alls and and you can't approach certain people.
And there are some there's obviously people like But man, everybody's so cool there.
Like, setting up, talking to everybody.
对。
Yep.
You know?
There 's very few people that kinda gave you the middle finger.
So Well, that's been my experience at that show too.
It was a pretty good one.
Good people.
So let's let's talk fly tying for a minute.
好的。
Okay.
You brought that up.
So you have come up with some of your own patterns or your own takes on patterns.
是的。
Yes.
I still fish the TS Mitch.
那里
There
Still fish that thing all the time.
I haven't shown anybody.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
So it's never it's never been on camera, but I still fish the crap out of that thing.
Well, it's called the trip saver.
那是
That's
why For a reason.
For a reason.
是的。
Yeah.
It's Not top secret.
Not to be confused with Pat Dorsey's top secret, Mitch.
不是。
No.
I've actually on my Instagram, I've shown how to tie it
and everything,
you know.
所以,
So
And it's really simple.
But I know a lot of folks are always curious, like, how do you come up with patterns?
What what's your process for sitting down and saying, alright, I need a fly that's gonna do x y and z.
What what's that look like for you?
So the t s midge, just to talk about it, like, I I really liked and it's a very simple midge fly.
There's like Yeah.
Three ingredients.
Right?
It's super super easy.
But at first, you know, I was using Zebra midges, especially like on the Ogden River.
That thing kills on the Ogden River, especially with the silver bead and and silver ribbing.
And it's like, know, that's really good.
And then I went out to Pyramid a couple times and they all everything we've caught, everything on pretty much was, at least for me, was coronamids.
对。
Yep.
Or, you know, and really but I don't like how the the three x long hook looks and that type of thing.
So I just do a a scut hook that's like two or three x strong.
If you can find any three x hooks, I mean those are those are like fine enhanced teeth now.
But you know, just going through the process, like I I you know, the main part of the pattern is is like brown hollow tinsel.
Right?
And I did different colors, different shapes, know, tied it with a butt heavy, you know, and then then now it's just tapered, you know, and it's like it looks pretty clean.
But with that, I it was just a process of trial and error when it came down to it.
对。
Yeah.
But like other flies that I've come up with, it it's I know that, like when UV dubbing was brand new, you could buy like crystal UV and that type of thing.
And so I just started adding that stuff into my dubbing for for nymphs because, know, bugs give a natural sheen off that UV like type of look that make them more buggy.
And so the funnest thing is like when you're tying flies, you don't have to worry about store bought stuff.
You get like an imagination.
Like my wife's first fly looked like a bunny.
It was all pink with two white ears, you know, type of thing.
And so it just depends on how you feel.
对。
Yeah.
But I don't know.
I've got a few different flies that I I tie just for me type of thing.
Is it tie in to solve a problem because you need a fly that looks or acts a certain way?
Or is it more of just taking something and trying to streamline it?
Well, it's not really streamlining, you know.
It's more like what's gonna work.
And, you know, you've known me for a long time.
对。
Yeah.
I tie on a lot of flies, know.
And lately, because I've got it down, I try and put on my most effective fly when I get in the water.
And I know almost always works everywhere.
对。
Yeah.
You know.
And then I'll modify from there, you know?
And I still tie it with black thread, but mainly I've been switching over to wine or red, you know, because I think it it presents better in the water.
对。
Yeah.
So Maybe a little bit more of that oh, not so what I'm blanking on the word.
Like a hot spot.
Contrast.
That's Yeah.
What I'm looking Right?
Because it's not the color that they react to so much, it's the contrast of those colors against the background of the water.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
And and when with the, like, the hollow brown, it's a very consistent color throughout all flies.
是的。
Yep.
You know what I'm saying?
Because most of them are that color.
And it just throws that little bit of UV out there to make them snap at it, and you don't have to bulk it up with a bunch of dubbing or anything.
And I try and make them bomb proof too.
So I guess there's a couple other ingredients.
One is super glue Yeah.
You know, on the base.
Because you'll catch thirty, forty fish on the same fly in a day.
And that's something that I don't see people do as much.
And I actually one of the very few good things my grandfather ever did with his life was he taught my dad how to tie flies.
My dad taught me.
And one of the tricks he did with peacock earls especially was always put super glue or head cement or whatever down before you wrap that peacock earl through.
对。
Yeah.
And it stays on the hook a lot better.
And I don't see a lot of modern tires in YouTube videos at least doing that.
I do.
And maybe it's because of time, you know?
But like with Frenchies, I do it with every Frenchie.
I do it
with hairs ear, pheasant tail.
对。
Yeah.
Any type of thing that breaks really easy.
And honestly, like, I don't even tie hairs ears like traditional hairs ears look anymore.
Because over the years, I've just been like, you know what?
I really don't like how the tails break super easy, so I'm gonna use Cocque de Leon on it, or I'm gonna use a different type of fiber.
And now they look completely different.
What I call a hairs ear is it doesn't even look like it.
Alex, my buddy here at VFC gives me that same issue.
He says, well, your Frenchies don't look like Frenchies is what he keeps telling me.
对。
Yeah.
He's like I'm like, why?
He's like, well, they're tapered too much.
I'm like, no.
They're tapered correctly because they catch fish.
I was gonna say.
They work for me.
If it ain't broke.
没错。
Exactly.
You know?
So no.
I just you get in the world of fly tying and it's always there there's so much to talk about.
Right?
Because it's always is there are you tying to to fill a need?
Are you tying to try and come up with something brand new?
I don't think there's really anything brand new to come up with.
That's the thing.
Like, and now when you talk about a new fly Yeah.
You're splitting hairs and you're talking about,
你
you
know New thread.
对。
Yeah.
The new thread or new size of wire, you know, you go point o one or point o two and people are oh, it's a new fly.
And I'm like, yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the same thing.
对。
Yeah.
确实。
It is.
But they they wanna have that, man.
So yeah.
So But yeah, my trip saver fly, you know, I call I shorten it to TS midge Yep.
And and it's just been a a killer.
It's a great fly to use.
So Yeah.
Well, let's let's pivot a little bit.
好的。
Okay.
What got you into fly fishing?
Let's let's talk about that for a minute.
好的。
Okay.
那么
So
because I I know a little bit of this story and it's pretty good.
So growing up, we were poor.
对。
Mhmm.
And so we had fish to eat.
And and so I just I mean, I was a killer when it came to chucking worms and stuff like that.
And I was really good at it, but I just didn't like how you smelled after.
And so I had a buddy in high school.
You know what I'm saying?
对。
Yeah.
It's like worms and No.
I do.
Just love it when you put it that way.
Like, yeah, you know, bait fishermen smell bad.
Well.
Maybe it's their attitude that stinks.
不是。
No.
I'm kidding.
They just haven't been fully enlightened.
Maybe this is that douchebag thing.
对。
Yeah.
Who knows?
Fishermen are known for.
Well, I mean But
I feel the same way.
The stereotype exists because it's true.
Oh, yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
Right?
So Well, what had happened is my buddy was like, he he called me up and I was working one day and and he's like, this was in high school and he's like, hey, man, let's go fly fishing.
And I'd done it when I was like 13 for like a minute on, you know, like a trout pond.
所以
So
对。
Yeah.
Not hard to catch fish on a trout pond.
不难。
No.
Right?
So Even I can
catch fish on a trout pond.
And so I I was like, nah, I don't wanna go.
I don't wanna smell like worms.
I'm I've gotta, you know, go go and hang out with friends.
He's like, nah, dude.
We're talking about fly fishing.
对。
Yeah.
I'm like, what are you talking about fly fishing?
You know?
And he was like, yeah.
You just, you know, you can go to work right after.
And so first time I went fishing with him was on the South Fork Of The Ogden up by Memorial Park.
And, you know, he used to always brag about how good a fish he was and everything.
And he caught like three fish that day, and I caught seven.
And I was like, alright.
I think I like this, you know?
And and by Now
that was back when Ogden was really scary.
Right?
Oh, yeah.
当然。
For sure.
Well, For those sounds who don't know, like Utah geography, Ogden's always kinda been don't go there after dark.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
People would drive around it.
And, you know, it's a tattoo on the face place.
You know?
就像
Like
对。
Yeah.
It's the neck tattoo of Utah in a lot of ways.
Honestly, it's so much better now, you know, like from what I understand.
I don't drive through it anymore either.
I'm kidding.
I was there last weekend.
I went paddle boarding up on Kauzy.
But anyway, the south fork of the Ogden's really pretty, and it it's a good little stretch of river.
Caught some really nice fish there.
And, you know, there's a stretch of 15 miles probably that's there's just a bunch of campgrounds, and there's nice browns in there, and and it's beautiful.
But, yeah, it was just one of those things where I got as soon as I caught those fish, I was like a kid on crack, like a fat kid on cake type of thing.
You know what I'm saying?
我当时
I was
对。
Yep.
I was gonna use a different term, but I don't think I can use that right now.
But Yeah.
We try and keep it family friendly as much as as much as my mug will allow, but we we try.
So I I went to pick my daughter up this morning before I left for work.
对。
Yeah.
And I'm like, hey Ruth, come here.
And she just looks at me and sticks her lip out and just screams a hand her to mom, smiles out.
I'm like, okay.
对。
Yeah.
I guess I do look bad today.
I know where I live.
I work,
you know.
Know my place.
是的。
I do.
Right at the bottom of the food chain.
I can't even tell her to like me because I'm paying the mortgage right now because I'm not.
对。
Yeah.
So anyways, getting into fly fishing.
Sorry.
So I I honestly, back then, you didn't have the Internet.
是的。
Yep.
I know this kinda dates me, but it was one of those things where I would walk by like Angler's Den.
They have fly fishing magazines, and I love Angler's Den.
You know, I used to hang out there all the time.
And anyway, and I'd just buy the magazines.
And then those magazines would have leaflets for other magazines, and so I buy those magazines.
I bought every book I could find.
They used to have this show on ESPN, you know, about fly fishing that basically told you nothing, but it was really pretty.
And so I watched every one of those, you know what And I'm I just became ridiculous.
And I had a job where I worked from 03:00 to 09:00 every day.
And so I was eight minutes away from the Ogden River, and I would go in the morning, fish until two or 03:00, and then go into work.
是的。
Yeah.
And that was all day every day.
所以
So
And that's what did it for you.
对。
Yeah.
Pretty much.
And that's that's kind of the training ground.
And also Oh, sorry.
Go ahead.
不。
No.
I was just gonna go ahead.
我,我
I I
Another inappropriate joke.
对。
Yeah.
Probably.
对。
Yeah.
就是
It's
I was just gonna say, like, yeah, all kidding aside, Hyrum is a great angler.
You're a great angler.
谢
Thank
谢。
you.
One of the best one of the fishiest guys I've ever fished with.
But the thing that gets underscored by a lot of folks is how much time and effort it takes to get there.
There's a lot of natural talent to it, and I would say you're probably a much more naturally talented angler than I am too than a lot of guys I know.
Not that comparing you to me is, you know, not like I'm some gold standard for anybody, just comparison's sake.
But there's the natural talent of it, and then there's all the work that you gotta put into
it And
people don't see that, you know, twenty, thirty years that you've been fly fishing, probably more than that.
Right?
I don't wanna I don't wanna put too much age on you, but Yeah.
I guess I'd be 31 now.
是的。
Yeah.
31?
31.
好。
K.
So yeah.
So yeah.
I'm I'm 48.
So now I'd be 32.
好。
K.
So thirty two years you've been doing that.
And the thing is it's not like I had met guys that are like, oh, I've been fishing for fifteen years, but they only go twice a year.
对。
Yep.
So they've been out 30 times.
没错。
Exactly.
Me, I would go two hundred days a year
对。
Yeah.
For the first still.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
He's still doing it.
对。
Yeah.
I think even when we were working together back in the day, it was 200 a year for you still,
even Yeah.
And even a couple years ago, I had a back surgery, so I'm kind of a wimp now.
But this year, it's it's slowed down quite a bit.
So at least you got a good excuse for it.
I'm just fat.
So I was like, yeah, I had back surgery.
I couldn't walk me.
I was just like, I can't get my hand out of the bag of Doritos.
So that's my problem.
Well, that's how I got my back surgery, actually.
Too much girth.
对。
Yeah.
那是我
That was one of
the even forgot kinda what I was saying.
But no, like, I would actually find places to work that was within fifteen minutes of a river that I could be on wet within fifteen minutes.
During our lunch break, I would just go and fish for half an hour and catch three or four or five fish and come back.
No.
And that's that's the thing I wanted to highlight though is there is you wanna get good at it.
There's the natural talent part that will help.
对。
Yeah.
But it's time on the water more than anything else that's gonna do that for you.
是的。
Yeah.
And there's really no shortcut to that.
People want there to be.
They want there to be the magic fly.
And and, you know, we we get a lot of folks asking about, well, what's this what's the setup?
What what do I use here?
What Mike, well, you use what the fish tell you to use Yeah.
A lot of the time.
And the only way to know that is do it a lot.
And you get to the point you mentioned earlier, yeah, you get to the river and you're gonna rig up with what you think should work most of the time.
And because you fish enough, you know, okay, yeah, this is what should work this time of the year.
对。
Yeah.
Because it's not gonna be the same rig if you go in June versus December.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
Well, and small creeks, they're that's different.
Right?
Small creeks almost always work with the same type of setup.
Within I like the I like the deer hair caddis, you You tie it with elk or deer.
I like the deer hair because it has a grayer wing, right, type of thing and the natural deer.
So deer hair caddis, pheasant tail or hare's ear, and then, you know, a t s midge or, you know, zebra midge below it.
And you'll almost always catch fish on a small creek just like that stream that's, you know, eight, ten feet wide
对。
Yeah.
Type of thing.
So you're always gonna be able to catch fish even midwinter I'm getting takes on dries or ants if it's, you know, in the summer type of thing.
对。
Yeah.
Going off that, I'm gonna actually dig into this too.
Think you're the first guy who introduced me to the dry dropper dropper.
对。
Yep.
I didn't fish that way till I met you.
是的。
Yeah.
I remember you were dry only or indicator rig.
Right?
对。
Yes.
对。
Yes.
This is I don't like to I don't like to bring those days back up, so I really appreciate that.
Why do you like that rig so much?
What made you go to that?
Because and it's not legal everywhere.
You know, some states are more heavy handed with their judicial branch or, oh, you can't do that.
But the place where it's illegal and you can get away with it.
Well, it's you know, I think in Idaho, you can run up to five different hooks on the same line.
对。
Yep.
You know, Wyoming's pretty similar if I recall.
But use Utah used to not be that way.
对。
Yep.
And so you could only fish dry dropper, it was only two hooks.
Right?
Yellowstone's still that way and they both gotta be barbless.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
So what's funny is I actually that's the one of the only times I've ever written the DNR in my life.
对。
Yeah.
Because I would go up to Idaho, fish three flies, and that way you're fishing a midge, a nymph, and a dry.
是的。
Yep.
And that's kinda what converted me forever ago, and that's kinda how I started out anyway.
Because, you know, I had buddies that were they were like, oh, you gotta do nymph fragrant or dry only.
And I'm like, why can't we just do both?
明白。
Mhmm.
You know?
And then you I would see things where people were like on the Madison or the Henry's Fork, they talk about dry dropper and, you know, or hopper dropper.
I'm like, well, why can't you do that year round?
对。
Yeah.
And so that's kinda how I started out doing it.
It was just me asking a question, why not?
And I think your dry fly is a lot more sensitive Way
more sensitive.
Than any type of indicator.
It doesn't matter if it's a New Zealand one or one of the small foam ones.
You know, back then it was just, you know, you you actually used to tie your your indicators, right, with a bunch of fluff and wrap it up really tight type of thing.
对。
Yeah.
Not sensitive at all.
So and the other conversion part of it, the reason I like tying it to a dry fly is watched this one special.
I can't remember it was.
And they showed a nymph going through a stream, and it had 12 takes before the top flight or the indicator rig moved.
So it had 12 takes, and so I figured, well, if it's got a solid line to it and there's no cushion, you're gonna have a lot better hookup rates.
And so
Well, and that's whole theory behind all the Euro and tightline thing.
Right?
是的。
Yeah.
Is direct connection, which, yeah, makes a lot of sense.
But you fish that way and it locks you into really that rig all day long unless you wanna take that twenty, thirty foot leader off and re rig with a new leader.
对。
Yeah.
It's a pain in the butt.
And that's why I've been the evangelist for the dry dropper dropper as well because Mhmm.
Right there with you.
It works.
对。
Yeah.
It's just it gives you a lot of variety and a lot of ability to to switch things up.
Oh, yeah.
当然。
Definitely.
And granted, like even I still fish indicator rigs occasionally when I, you know, on certain rivers when you're on a like we were on a drift boat last week and, you know, when you're running super deep Yep.
And stuff like that.
It makes way more sense.
对。
Yeah.
Because you're casting it out there and it's sitting for one to two minutes, whereas, you know, smaller creek, that type of thing, dry dropper, dropper.
And honestly, we all switched over at the end to where we were running three dries.
对。
Yeah.
Because it was a PMD hatch and so I had like the adult PMD at the top, kind of in a merger like Yeah.
You know, and then a cripple at the bottom.
对。
Yeah.
Man, we we freaking destroyed it.
Murdered.
So Yeah.
It was good.
So what's the issue then with casting those three flies?
I know you you mentioned this.
对。
Yeah.
And people immediately think, oh, that's gonna tangle.
And if you're casting a traditional 10:00, 02:00, you know, and not pausing right, of course it's going to.
没错。
Yep.
If you're gonna cast that same plane, then you need to wait a little bit longer on each one just so you can power it out.
What I do is when I pull it in, I it depends on what what way the wind's coming.
对。
Yeah.
You know, so if the wind's blowing this way, I'll pick up this way, and then I'll cast this way.
So it's just you're drawing a small oval in the sky and it gives those
Little Belgium cast, I think is what they call it.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
The official name for it or whatever.
对。
Yeah.
Maybe.
Something like that.
Or the Hyrum cash, we just call it that.
We can call it whatever you want, man.
Like, Belgian I like I like fries.
I think they no.
I don't know.
不。
No.
They did come up with fries.
I remember I had a big argument with my wife about that the other day, so I I remember, and I was wrong.
And I think they called them frites or something, you know?
Well, anyway, they
call them chips in England for
a crap.
没错。
That's true.
And in Scotland, they call them the same
thing too.
So You know, they give a lot to the world, but come on.
Use our words.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
We invented English.
A 100%.
对。
Yeah.
100%.
对。
Yeah.
Well,
what's funny is, and this I heard from someone somewhere, but they said that to recreate true English, it actually sounds American.
Like the I
don't doubt it.
The Queen's English is actually a bastardization of the English language because they were trying to sound fancier.
对。
Yeah.
So when we speak as English people, and this is gonna be cut on all the floor, but you know
不。
No.
This is making it this is what people tune into Untangled for is linguistic dissection.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
没错。
Exactly.
Well, and then you had the great vowel shift back in the seventeen hundreds.
Right?
I mean, who
who among us doesn't know about the great vowel shift?
Mean, come on.
And I didn't go to college.
This is YouTube University, bro.
The the big thing a lot of people don't know about is a consonant swap of '69.
That was a big one.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
Blame it on Jimi Hendrix, really, you know.
Man.
Well, you know what?
Let's the other big thing I wanted to to get into today too.
So we've covered a lot of good ground.
But I think more than more than watching you fish on streams.
And I'm not to say that I've figured that out
对。
Yeah.
But looking back on it now, I can see why I struggled so much when we fished together a ton.
And we'd get out on the streams and you'd kick my butt.
I'm like, what am I doing wrong?
And now I I get it.
It was all presentation issues.
对。
Yeah.
99%.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
But I still haven't quite figured out the gap that existed and still exists between us on still water Okay.
On lakes.
So I still get my butt kicked on a lot of lakes.
Not for lack of trying, but I still don't do super great on them.
I had a great couple of days this summer, and that was kind of the highlight of of it for me.
But what what are a lot of people because we could do a whole show just on lakes.
Oh, yeah.
What are a lot of folks missing when it comes to fishing still water?
Some of the the top mistakes that you see you see folks making.
Sorry, my nose itched.
No, you're fine.
You know, mistakes wise, I don't know.
I don't look around sideways too much Yeah.
On that stuff.
But when I approach a lake, first thing is observation.
And I try and pick places that are, you know, like a little jetty or something that pokes out that's little bit different that's gonna condense the fish to come in.
