You are eligible to get a thousand dollars from the government deposited into the account.

Speaker 0

Even if you only got the thousand dollars and it grew at, let's say, 4%, it's almost gonna double by the time they're 18.

Speaker 0

I don't think everyone in America has the means to really fulfill these accounts.

Speaker 1

Hello, and welcome to Wealthion.

Speaker 1

我是Maggie Lake。

I'm Maggie Lake.

Speaker 1

Joining me today to give us an overview of Trump Accounts is Brandy Maben, director at WindRock Wealth Management.

Speaker 1

嗨,Brandy。

Hi, Brandy.

Speaker 1

It's great to see you again.

Speaker 0

Hi.

Speaker 0

Great to see you too.

Speaker 0

Thanks for having me.

Speaker 1

So there are a lot of programs and offers coming out of Washington these days, but one of the new plans that has generated a lot of conversation, a lot of questions is the Trump Accounts aimed at children.

Speaker 1

Now they were announced as part of the one big beautiful bill, but they just went live this past July.

Speaker 1

So we thought it would be great to sort of just break down the kind of, you know, general details of what they are so we can understand if it's something people should be talking to their adviser about.

Speaker 1

First of all, what are they?

Speaker 1

What is a Trump account?

Speaker 0

A Trump account is a custodial account, basically like an IRA, where it's for children that are allowed to open an account as soon as they're born, and they don't receive full ownership of it until January 1 of the year they turn 18.

Speaker 0

And it works like an IRA because the tax on it is deferred.

Speaker 0

So as it grows, they aren't responsible of the tax and neither is the parent or grandparent or whoever did open it for them.

Speaker 1

So I think that there was some offers to seed it with some money as well, which is where the attractiveness comes in.

Speaker 1

So who qualifies and does everyone get that initial investment from the government or from the government's partners?

Speaker 1

How does that work?

Speaker 0

So there's a couple of different funding options.

Speaker 0

One, you were born 01/01/2025 up until 2028, you are eligible to get a thousand dollars from the government deposited into the account, which is fantastic.

Speaker 0

You do have to follow some requirements that the IRS has put in place, including being a US citizen.

Speaker 0

But the IRS website can get really detailed into that application process.

Speaker 0

But if you aren't within that age bracket, there are other opportunities to be funded.

Speaker 0

So, Dell gives $250 to some candidates that apply if you have a salary, a gross salary at your house of $150,000 or less and your zip code lines up.

Speaker 0

You can also now as of August get $2,500 from an employer gift.

Speaker 0

So say Wealthion wanted to give their employees a child benefit, it's per employee $2,500 So if you have two kids, you could pick your favorite and give one all the money this year and one next year or split it right in half.

Speaker 0

But that's a fun little benefit that's come about as well.

Speaker 1

That's really interesting.

Speaker 1

I love that.

Speaker 1

Hopefully, the time they're 18, you can fight about it then if you have a favorite.

Speaker 1

That makes for some great family dynamics at the holiday table.

Speaker 1

I mean, these amounts are interesting because you can say, okay, dollars $1,002.50, dollars 2,500, but compounding makes it really interesting, right?

Speaker 1

I think the problem they're trying to solve for is that just getting that initial stake and then letting it grow, it can turn into...

Speaker 1

I know there's some pretty amazing math around that.

Speaker 1

So what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Speaker 1

So if you're thinking about this, and maybe I just talked about one of the advantages, but why would we want to do this aside from the free money?

Speaker 1

And then are there any disadvantages?

Speaker 0

So anyone that's starting an account at the day of birth is ahead of most of us when we started, right?

Speaker 0

I didn't invest at one years old.

Speaker 0

So, you're getting these children and grandchildren just a head start with the compounding interest like you talked about.

Speaker 0

Even if you only got the $1,000 and it grew at, let's say, 4%, it's almost going to double by the time they're 18, and that's not adding a dollar more to it.

Speaker 0

So it's free money for your children.

Speaker 0

It just makes so much sense to get into it if you can.

Speaker 1

Everything we do on this channel has one goal, to make you a sharper, better informed investor, someone who understands the macro forces shaping your money before the mainstream catches on.

Speaker 1

But information is only half of it.

Speaker 1

The other half is acting on it.

Speaker 1

And that's what Wealthion membership is for.

Speaker 1

It's how you go from watching these conversations to putting them to work in your own portfolio.

Speaker 1

Membership opens three doors: access to advisors, helping build real assets into your portfolio, and for accredited investors, access to specialized funds.

Speaker 1

To learn more, the link to become a member is in the description box below.

Speaker 0

I would say another advantage is that it doesn't relate to any other account you can open for a child.

Speaker 0

So you can still have an IRA, a Roth, an UPMA, an UGMA.

Speaker 0

You can have just a normal brokerage account, checking account, savings account.

Speaker 0

You can mix and match, which is pretty great.

Speaker 0

So all of these entrepreneurs that have their kids making a little bit of money with marketing or whatever purposes can have their Roth IRA and this one.

Speaker 0

I would say if you're taking that strategy, you could also, as soon as the child is of working age, sometimes it's going to be 18, if they're still a dependent, they might have to wait till they're 26, but take this Trump account, it's treated like an IRA, roll it over to a Roth when this young adult is in a very low tax bracket, add it to their Roth, and then it's even more tax free money later on.

Speaker 0

They will have that little bit of tax hit, but I would say that's the most advantageous strategy I'm seeing from this.

Speaker 0

And if my clients are interested, that's what we talk about.

Speaker 0

But the fact pattern has to be there.

Speaker 0

I don't think everyone in America has the means to really fulfill these accounts, much less make it the priority.

Speaker 0

Sometimes the priority is a five twenty nine.

Speaker 0

Sometimes it's simple savings.

Speaker 0

There's lots of other things to save for.

Speaker 0

So I would just say talk to your financial advisor about the priorities and facts that lay into this.

Speaker 1

Yeah, that's a great point.

Speaker 1

As with everything, right?

Speaker 1

Everyone's situation is different, but it's nice to know that there is yet another option.

Speaker 1

Who can contribute to this?

Speaker 0

So anyone can.

Speaker 0

Like I said, an employer can give to it.

Speaker 0

The government can even give to it for the 3,000.

Speaker 0

Parents, grandparents, it can be part of an annual exclusion, the 19,000.

Speaker 0

It will count towards that, but it can still be gifted.

Speaker 0

Even charities can give to it.

Speaker 0

So, it's pretty flexible on who can give.

Speaker 0

Another advantage or disadvantage is that the maximum contribution is $5,000 So, depending on your dynamic, could be plenty, but it's much less than a $5.29.

Speaker 0

So, that could be hindering for some.

Speaker 1

It's interesting.

Speaker 1

I do feel like, and I don't even know if this is a reasonable question, but that's why we like to have them.

Speaker 1

Is is it easier for someone else, like like a charity, like a, you know, even a family friend or someone to contribute to something like this as opposed to a five twenty nine?

Speaker 1

Because I know so so many times they're kind of set up through your personal existing.

Speaker 1

Can that...

Speaker 1

Is that the same with those other types of accounts, does this...

Speaker 1

Does that that make this unusual?

Speaker 0

You know, they're trying to make it more flexible and more opportunistic for many people to give to it.

Speaker 0

I have kids and our godmother gives to their five twenty nine personally every year.

Speaker 0

So, it's something that any family member can choose which one they want to give to.

Speaker 0

I think this just opens the opportunity for more options.

Speaker 1

For another one.

Speaker 1

That's a great point.

Speaker 1

And listen, sometimes we're talking child, but this can also be really informative to someone who is, you know, thinking about what they can do in the next generation in ways that they can help people too.

Speaker 1

So it's both of those things.

Speaker 1

If if you have a child in your life, and I say that for that reason, maybe it's not your child, if there is someone you want to help or something, is there the best way to do this?

Speaker 1

Should it be a one lump sum, hit that maximum contribution right away, or is it better to spread it out incrementally throughout the year?

Speaker 0

I think that's another fact pattern question.

Speaker 0

So if you have the means to lump sum it, you're going to more likely get a lot more bang for your buck, if you will, and the compounding interest will happen right away in January.

Speaker 0

However, if your fact pattern is I can only do it monthly for X amount a year, do that because it's better than nothing.

Speaker 0

People shouldn't be intimidated by the $5,000 mark if it's just part of their monthly paycheck.

Speaker 0

I also think that the lump sum at the beginning, some people get afraid of because what if the market's really high in January and they want to dollar cost average through the year to make sure they're hitting all the volatility that happens within the market?

Speaker 1

That's exactly why I asked.

Speaker 1

But again, depends on your circumstance, most certainly.

Speaker 1

If you make a contribution, you hit the limit.

Speaker 1

Does it affect...

Speaker 1

I think you mentioned before it doesn't affect the other accounts that child may have, but does it affect your ability as a giver?

Speaker 1

Can you just go over that again?

Speaker 1

Because I wasn't clear when we were talking before if it was...

Speaker 1

Doesn't affect other accounts for the recipient or for the person who is giving the gift.

Speaker 0

It doesn't affect the individuals on either side.

Speaker 0

So, the giver, it does not affect their contribution limit to their own four zero one ks, their IRA or their Roth, simple SEP, whatever retirement account we're speaking of, or the actual tax recipients or the child.

Speaker 0

It doesn't affect their other qualified accounts like an IRA or Roth or UTMA.

Speaker 0

So, it's flexible in that way too and not hindering, which is great.

Speaker 1

If you're someone who's maybe going to be faced to make a choice, is it clear yet?

Speaker 1

Do we know whether this is better than 529s, less advantaged to 529s if can only focus on one, or is it too soon to say that yet?

Speaker 0

It's going to depend on the individual.

Speaker 0

I have a lot of clients right now that have fully funded 529s to the point that their kids will probably gift their 529s to their grandchildren.

Speaker 0

So, if 529s is maxed out, that's one reason to maybe go this direction.

Speaker 0

Or people find that their kids are thinking about going to YouTube university instead an actual college.

Speaker 0

So, they're skeptical of a five twenty nine.

Speaker 0

They're trying to make 529s more flexible, but even the Roth component to it is very slow moving year by year.

Speaker 0

So, it really depends on your goals in the end for the child and what you want to accomplish.

Speaker 1

That makes sense.

Speaker 1

So five twenty nine specific for education purposes, the Trump Accounts can be used presumably, it's just a savings account to get them growing their savings.

Speaker 0

是的。

It is.

Speaker 0

However, it works like a retirement account.

Speaker 0

So these kids at the moment, which ages and rules will always change, but they can't truly take money out until they're 59.5.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Understood.

Speaker 1

And then if you if if you don't qualify for this, because I know you mentioned there's some salary issues, depends where you live.

Speaker 1

There are multiple places to go now.

Speaker 1

But if you don't qualify for the the gift of money, for the initial down payment, can you open them without that?

Speaker 1

I think the answer is yes.

Speaker 1

And, you know, I think this is probably a loaded question, but we talked about 529s.

Speaker 1

What are the options if you're thinking about if you're focused on saving for education?

Speaker 0

You know, I'm sure just like an IRA and Roth, there are stipulations where you can withdraw money for educational purposes.

Speaker 0

The Trump accounts are making new rules every month since it came out in July.

Speaker 0

So I tell all my clients we'll just keep watching it and see the flexibility that it has.

Speaker 0

But other than a five twenty nine, there are tuition prepaid options within universities.

Speaker 0

There's other options of just paying it cash if you want to.

Speaker 0

People can gift from their own accounts and get a deduction from it.

Speaker 0

So, there's lots of other options for education as well.

Speaker 1

Fantastic.

Speaker 1

Brandy, so great to catch up with you.

Speaker 1

Thank you for shedding some light on this.

Speaker 1

It's a fast moving topic, so we're going to have to watch, but at least it's exciting that there are some more options for people to consider.

Speaker 1

So thanks for walking us through it.

Speaker 0

当然。

Of course.

Speaker 0

Thank you.
