This episode was recorded on the country of the Dharug people.
I pay my respects to elders past and present.
I recognize their ongoing connection to land, waters, birds, and all living things.
Welcome to Weekend Birder.
I'm Kirsty Costa, and this is a place where we notice birds together.
I regularly hear from Weekend Birder listeners like you, and recently, they've been requesting more episodes about different technology that is out there for bird watchers.
So I've invited Brandon Chapman on the show.
Brandon is the founder of Wingmate, an app that's part game, part field guide, and with the goal of seeing every bird species in your region.
Here is how Brandon's story started.
My personal journey started around 10 years old, but it actually started with my my grandfather who was who loved birding and actually began when he was in boarding school in South Africa.
He and his friend, a fellow student called Warwick, they used to spend, I think, days moving bird bird hides closer to birds, trying to capture nesting birds before telephoto cameras existed.
And, yeah, I was actually encouraged by one of their headmasters who was a who actually gifted my grandfather his first field guide.
Their passion kind of continued after that.
Warwick went on to actually become one of South Africa's most respected bird watchers and a leading authority on dragonflies.
That early friendship was built around the shared love of wildlife and sparked a lot a lifelong passion that would eventually be passed down through our family.
是的。
Yeah.
So my mother actually introduced me.
I was always I always loved birds, but I think I kind of viewed myself as starting bird watching at around 10 years old when I got my first life list and also started taking some photos.
Yeah, since then the rest is history.
I kind of caught the bird watching bug.
I've seen over 1,300 birds over the world.
Myself, my mother used to take bird watching trips during school holidays.
She was a teacher, so we kind of had the same availability over that time.
And, yeah, we would do week long camping trips to all corners of Australia chasing lifers.
And, yeah, those definitely some of my most cherished moments.
So I'm I'm always thankful that I was able to have that connection.
I love that Brandon's grandfather is the reason that he's birdwatching.
Brandon has taken his love of birdwatching and combined it with his training in software engineering to do something really interesting.
I was always interested in computers, so I was I always knew I was gonna do something IT related.
I was always passionate about birds, but I didn't really want it to become my well, I didn't know whether it'd become my full time career.
Then I went on a trip to New Zealand.
I I landed there.
I was ready to explore Middle Earth.
As as a bird watcher, I wanted a way to easily start engaging with birds while on my trip.
So I downloaded some of the apps, and I found that none of them could really do what I wanted.
This this led me to actually spending the day chasing down bookshops, calling book suppliers, driving across town to actually I finally found a small bookstore that could actually provide a field guide for my trip.
And, yeah, it was quite impractical and took up a lot of the space in the small rental car we had.
I thought, look, it shouldn't be this hard if someone who isn't very committed might not want to jump through all these hoops to engage in the hobby.
So I try to imagine what I wanted to use and see in the world.
So, yeah, I started turning an outdoor adventure into a a quest to collect every animal you encounter, like living Pokemon.
But instead of just passing passing by birds, you could actually capture them and add them to your collection, turning every hike into a game where every creature is kind of an achievement waiting to happen.
I know there's lots of outdoor enthusiasts and parents worldwide that face probably similar challenges.
They maybe notice their child or themselves have a unexplored interest in wildlife but lack the tools to easily engage with it.
So, yeah, that's why I created Wingmate.
I wanted a intuitive portable solution that could transform curiosity into an engaging activity.
I brought my bird watching friend Rowan along and, yeah, I think we've just been self funded and building what we want to see and use.
Brandon's not the first WeekendBirder guest to mention that birdwatching is like Pokemon.
It's because birdwatching turns nature into a giant interactive game.
Just as players fill out a Pokedex in Pokemon, birdwatchers often maintain a life list of every species they've ever identified.
Both hobbies involve traveling to specific habitats, studying body features and calls, and being part of a community.
Brandon says that birdwatching taps into that same thrill of discovery and the cataloging that is really similar to Pokemon.
With Pokemon, I think, a lot of it is actually firstly being able to kind of unlock all the species you come across.
It shares a similar cognitive phenomenon where people feel compelled to, like, finish sets once they've started.
So, yeah, it's not just about owning items.
It's about actually achieving the satisfaction of, like, finishing a set.
If you actually look at the the motivations for bird watching and in general, it's actually inspired by kind of four main elements, which is achievement, conservation, appreciation, and social.
I think both of these obviously, Pokemon and birdwatching tap into our human desire to complete collections and compete.
But I think what makes birdwatching very special is that it's able to balance this competitive drive with the actual conservation and appreciation aspects.
So instead of just becoming obsessive, it actually becomes purposeful and actually creates a genuine connection and appreciation for wildlife.
One of the many things that I love about bird watching is that everyone has the choice to do it differently in a way that suits them.
You might enjoy the relaxation it brings and therefore like to notice birds slowly and without too much pressure, or you might like the thrill of the competition, the fun of setting yourself challenges.
What Brandon said reminds us is that there is no right way or wrong way as long as the welfare of birds is kept at the top of the priority list.
Initially, Brandon decided to focus his energies on the birds of New Zealand.
He wanted to solve that issue that he experienced when he was there on holiday.
New Zealand, I think, was a smaller location with with a lot less bird species to start off with.
So I think we just wanted to try and get it right, kinda get the format going right, and then actually move to a a lot larger bird dataset, kind of use it as a like an MVP and then transfer it over to Australia, which we have a bit more knowledge of.
Look, it's quite an ambitious project trying to map out so many birds.
I guess kinda when you start creating an app that's trying teach people about birds, you quickly realize that our scientific understanding of these species is kinda constantly evolving.
We're still busy splitting out species, still discovering what we thought was one bird is actually three distinct populations.
And, yeah, the taxonomy itself is always alive and changing.
I I think to truly understand birds, you can't also just learn about field marks and cores.
You have to understand entire ecosystems, something obviously no one person can.
But, yeah, like, you have to know flowering cycles, insect emergent patterns, seasonal availability of food sources.
Plus, there's just so many birds that actually just cross international borders and are just part of such a larger web of life.
You know, I think what building this app has taught me is humility.
I think every time I think I understand a species, I discover there's another layer, another relationship, dependency, connection that I hadn't considered before.
Birds aren't just beautiful creatures that we identify and, tick off lists.
They're, yeah, pieces to such a larger ecosystem that doesn't have borders.
During this research of Australian birds, Brandon says that he fell in love with the Comb Crested Jicana.
It's a quite
a small looking, wetland bird.
It it actually is has a very interesting ability.
It actually walks on water.
It's able to actually kind of walk on the floating vegetation on top of water.
So if you're at a distance and you see something walking on water, it's most likely a Cone crested checana.
It's got a beautiful red comb as well as yellow on its neck and a teardrop coming down from the eye, which I find an awesome addition.
What I find so intriguing about these birds is, obviously, the the the females are very different to the males.
In most species, males are normally larger and have more color.
But, yeah, for full camgrestracheconas, the females are actually larger.
The males also do all the incubating and and chick rearing while female defends territory.
I also love the fact that you'll often you might see, if you're lucky, during breeding season, you might see little legs sticking out from the back of one of them and that's because the males actually tuck the chicks underneath their wings.
And it's a cute little thing seeing these little wings, legs dangling out from dad as he tries to carry them to safety.
是的。
Yeah.
I think there's also a little bit of a familial connection to them.
Warwick, my grandfather's friend, actually did his his thesis on the African jacana, so across the pond.
Parekh's also an expert on eggs and nests, and this is actually one of my favorite parts about the African and the Concreseed jacana is their their eggs.
Very stunning.
They've got this marble dark brown look with swirling black lines, which is just incredible in my opinion.
They occur kind of more in subtropical conditions.
So you'll start to find them, Northern New South Wales, and then it continues all the way up through Cairns, Iron Ranges, and you'll find quite a lot of them in the Northern Territory as well.
So, yeah, if you're traveling around Darwin or on your Cairns, likely with any wetland with Yep.
Vegetation, quite a bit of, surface vegetation, you're likely to see them.
You'll likely see them quite far away.
They're normally quite far out on the wetlands.
But, if if you're lucky enough to see them quite close, you'll see that they are pretty small.
Probably like, if you can think of a grebe with very long legs and very long toes, that's that's kind of what what they go got going for them.
That comb crested chicano cording was by Mark Anderson.
What a cool bird.
Brandon says that the Wingmate app is a work in progress, but it already has some really good features.
Wingmate
Wingmate aims to be a Pokemon bot for for bird watching.
We aim to try and get people everything they need to actually start engaging with with the wildlife around them.
So field guides, we have identification tools, we have different locations, as well as key summaries of birds you can see at those locations.
What makes Wingmate fantastic is its ability for anyone to kind of pick it up and actually just start collecting and start engaging with the entirety of of bird watching.
So, yeah, I I think we kind of give people the ability to do that with the tools we have.
We've obviously also got AI identification.
So if you're completely lost and don't know where to start, you can just upload a photo and give an lists of examples of of what it could be as well as actually, yeah, reading through the descriptions, actually trying to understand from a a macro perspective all the birds around you or in Australia in general and, yeah, easily kind of see and identify those birds as well.
If anyone is knows someone who's curious about birds, parents with kids, outdoor enthusiasts, travelers, Yeah.
I think WingMate's designed specifically to make bird watching accessible.
So I I think a lot of app other apps, you have to have prior knowledge to actually start engaging with it.
I think we kind of give that that broader view.
So, I I think it's perfect for that kind of audience.
This is a trend that that is obviously increased, and I think it's it's quite large at the moment among Gen z in 2025.
Mobile phone usage averages around seven point five hours per day.
So I think what what Wingmate aims to do is actually tries to meet young people where they are, encouraging a balance between digital and and natural connections.
I think we aim to translate that into higher engagements with birds and biodiversity by, yeah, providing tools like our built in field guides, like our hotspots that are close by to users.
And actually, as a result, we're hoping that this time spent in nature that Wingmate facilitates can actually act as a catalyst for greater conservation engagement.
是的。
Yeah.
We wanna provide young people with the tools to build appreciation early.
If people, yeah, just wanna start, WingMed's available on the App Store, on Google Play, any backyard bird or any walk, road trip, start adding species to your collection.
Like many bird watchers, Brandon is also a passionate conservationist, and he wants to ensure that Wingmate is having a positive impact in the world.
We've obviously recorded over 20,000 bird sightings, to help kind of support citizen science.
是的。
Yeah.
I think CSIRO noted that that over half of the records over all Australian atlases are from citizen science.
So it really does help to kind of monitor these species movements and understand their distribution.
We've also committed to giving a percentage of our profits to environmental causes, supporting wildlife and and habitats.
So I I'm hoping that obviously all has a positive impact on on the environment and bird life.
If you represent any environmental organizations, schools, or conservation groups, and you're you're looking for partnerships or, yeah, wanna have a chat, we're we're always looking for partnerships.
So definitely, yeah, reach out.
If you've ever started a small business before or even founded your own digital startup, you know how many sweat hours go into creating it.
Brandon says that it's birdwatching that keeps him going even in the most busiest and most challenging times in his business.
Birdwatching forces you to slow down and actually be present and actually observe the world around you.
Often if you're stuck in your head listening just to your thoughts and actually not engaged, you're not very likely to see anything.
So I I think it's kind of a symptom of actually being a good bird watcher is being able to kinda quiet quiet your inner thoughts and actually focus on on the world around you.
I think, secondly, the places bird watching takes me.
It's there's so many localized birds all across the world, like, for example, the the ungala honeyeater.
I saw this trip.
It it only occurs on a small group of rainforest mountains just West of Mackay.
And, yeah, to seed, you actually have to engage in this little micro ecosystem.
And there's, yeah, there's just so many examples of those exactly like that from rainforest to deserts to alpines.
You basically have to go everywhere to see them and it makes you never run out of places to explore and actually see something new.
I think thirdly, there's also always something to observe.
If you're not finding the exact species you want or you're targeting, there's always something to keep you entertained.
Maybe it's a a gray fantail giving you a a little dance on your walk or maybe it's learning a new a call or maybe it's just watching how birds interact with their environment or even each other.
Even a a slow birding day can beat a lot a lot of our other activities.
Lastly, it's it's the pursuit as well.
Going to these kind of remote locations, not seeing birds, trying the next day, moving spots, And then finally you see it just before you leave.
I think all that effort you put into seeing the bird has kind of paid off when you finally get to see it.
I've always thought if it was very easy, it wouldn't be any fun.
I think it's also kind of the the challenge of of trekking through harsh conditions, early mornings, remote locations that makes it so rewarding and also intriguing to me personally.
And, yeah, even if you've seen all the birds in your local area or garden, you can always get a better photo.
I've also found throughout my life, there's been different aspects which I engage more with.
Previously, I was more focused on primarily on the pursuit of birds as a primary motivation.
But, yeah, now I'm actually enjoying more about going to these new environments and just listening to different morning choruses in different locations.
And, yeah, don't get me wrong.
I I still absolutely love the pursuit.
But, yeah, I'm constantly changing what I define as birdwatching.
What I really appreciated about listening to Brandon was the reminder that loving birds and nature comes in so many forms.
It's such a special thing to have in our lives.
I encourage you to check out Wingmate and also go and support Brandon on social media.
We gotta get behind our community members.

In the next episode, we are welcoming Grandia Cleary back on the show to talk about why birds sing.
It's gonna be fun.
