Bridget's had a chat with us before about her love of bush birds and beach birds, and her friend Jane is new to the pod.

When I arrived at Jane's house in Campbell's Creek, about an hour and a half's drive north of Melbourne, I was greeted with hugs, a cool drink and some delicious snacks.

It's a 40 acre bush block and we're surrounded by the Castlemane Diggings Heritage National Park.

It's landlocked by the park, which is amazing for us.

So the bush continues from one side of our block right through the middle and out the other side to the national park and you can't really tell the difference between each bit of land.

And we're very lucky to live here and we share it with heaps of wildlife and birds.

There's some white throated tree creepers nesting in the nest box just outside the studio.

For those people who don't know you, Jane, do you wanna introduce yourself?

I'm an artist, but I also have a science background.

lot of bird surveys, particularly with Connecting Country, is the local not for profit environmental organisation.

They have a woodland birds program and also for bird life on their Birds on Farms program.

So I'm passionate about surveying birds and conservation and because birds are such a good indicator species, I'm very happy to throw my effort into birds because if the birds are happy I figure everything else is happy.

The habitat's good, the insects are good, the mammals are going to be good as well, like the whole lot.

All of that, plus my love of the outdoors and bush walking and mountain biking and all that sort of thing, all feeds into my artwork which is about, it's actually all about birds even though some of it looks like it's landscape, it's actually habitat.

Whether I'm painting birds or painting habitat, it all comes from a deep reverence of the natural world and wanting to do something about it.

And so, yeah, all of that feeds into my artwork and it's basically what underpins my artwork.

Well, I'm Bridget Farmer.

And I get a whole four weeks in accommodation in Adelaide to write my next book or maybe two or three.

I've got lots of ideas.

I just never have any time to sit down and do them because, you know, family, the business, everything takes over, and writing always gets shoved to the last thing that needs to be done.

And, yeah, in the past, I've had to book Airbnbs for a weekend to try and get some writing done.

I reckon I rocked up to one of Bridget's open studios because I've done a lot of printmaking as well and Bridget being a printmaker and also in The Birds.

And so I think that's where we first probably met and of course she was really lovely.

And then Bridget's not great at remembering faces.

But I think we really connected on bird walks, on BirdLife Castlemain District bird walks where we both had our cameras slung around our necks taking photos of birds to draw from.

Can you tell us how it started?

And it is, it's Mali country and it's across the border from Victoria in to South Australia and then, correct me if I'm wrong, then sort of up a wee bit.

And just having a great time, and then, all through the day, we'd just go exploring, looking at the different vegetation and what birds we could find.

There were times when it was just pouring of rain and so we'd all just get into my van and we just draw in my van.

So it was actually it was a very special time, wasn't it?

Yeah.

And then after the rain stops, the birds all come out.

They all look a little bit bedraggled and gorgeous.

Like there was this huge one in the campground, which I sat beside for some time and took photos of birds, and it was gone in twenty four hours.

So, you know, the birds were making the most of that puddle while it was there.

And that trip sparked a project for the two of you, didn't

We knew that we wanted to keep doing this because the information we gathered from that trip has been feeding our work for for months and months after that.

I was walking down the street in Castlemaine, and I've been following Leo and Cesari on their two birder, two bikes around Australia cycling, birding, amazing adventure.

I've been looking at the videos, watching the videos of them with my kids and, you know, we get updates and I was just completely inspired by them and I thought, oh, wouldn't it be amazing just to go off birding and go on an adventure but I can't.

I've got a business like then I thought, hold on.

You can do this a different way, couldn't I?

I was like, oh, I need to phone Jane.

I don't know where the chip shop is relevant, but that's where I was standing on the main street in Castlemaine.

And you're like, yes.

I didn't even know what it was.

And so, yeah, our plan has sort of changed and grown and, you know, we make up the rules as we go along and,

And then we went to Hatter Kalkine National Park on the search for Malianyuanz.

I think that many weekend bird listeners can relate to your story.

It reminds me of what Steph Chambers from Sydney Bird Club once said on this podcast.

If you don't wanna see a bird, set it as your target species, and you'll get to see so many other birds because you'll definitely not see the one you set out for.

I was recently up at Hatter as well, and I just love being there.

And then there's the bird species and we were seeing a a heap of yellow plumed honeyeaters.

They were everywhere.

They're they have this red bill and this, like, citron yellow body with green wings and they're a very beautiful parrot and they shoot through really fast and you often don't see them until you flush them.
