And as people might hear in the background a little bit, it's also right in the middle of the city, and it's it's a peak hour around us, so it's really buzzing right now.

It is buzzing, but it is so cool that someone not not from Melbourne to come down and see this amazing place that's right in the middle of the city.

We were, which was fitting with what you're talking about at the start of the episode, and it was, yeah, really cool for me as well, not not being from Melbourne to see bell miners after I haven't seen them for many years and just appreciate how gorgeous they are.

They are.

I mean, they're known a bit as being bully birds, a bit like noisy miners.

But if we just remember that one of the reasons that we have what the concept bullybirds is because we've kind of stuffed the environment and upset the equilibrium of how an ecosystem works.

But they're not as prominent as they were because noisy miners are have become even more dominant.

So it feels like it's a bit of a minor off at the moment.

It's good to say that the bell miners that are holding up here are other than the noisy miners because obviously, as you said, we can't blame the birds.

It is what we have done to the environment as humans that has thrown out the equilibrium and now there's rainbow lorikeets and noisy miners and bell miners.

But it's lovely to come to a place like this where you get a great diversity of birds nonetheless.

So for those people who have never met you before, do you wanna introduce yourself?

Sure.

I'm well, I'm not even too sure how to introduce myself, but my name is Jonah.

I I think I'd probably call myself a bird enthusiast.

I'm definitely probably more on the serious, I guess, end of the bird spectrum.

But to, you know, to be honest, like I've always I've I've I'm never someone who's considered myself a hardcore birder.

我从来没有认真记录过我见过的鸟类，也没在野外指南上打勾标记。

Like Like I've never really kept many lists of the birds that I've seen or I I ticked them off in my field guide.

So I'm I'm somewhere on the definitely And now that I post a lot about birds on Instagram, it's hard to not call myself a serious burner because I do spend a bit of time on it at the moment.

But just someone who's always loved loved birds, had a real interest in them and an interest in the environment.

And so, yeah, that's probably where I'd place myself.

Do you think there's a bit of a bird spectrum

那你是怎么开始喜欢鸟类的呢？

So how did, like, you get into birds?

你从小就开始喜欢它们了吗，还是后来才爱上它们的？

Have you always loved them as a kid or was it something you got into later in life?

对。

Yeah.

Good question.

对我来说，那应该是我大约14岁的时候。

So for me, it was I think I must have been about 14.

那是我在八年级上学的时候。

It was when I was in grade eight at school.

我记得我奶奶在圣诞节送了我一本《澳大利亚鸟类野外指南》。

I remember that my my grandma gave me a field guide to the birds of Australia for Christmas.

I I really specifically remember like around that Christmas time flicking through the field guide and thinking this is awesome.

Like, this is so many cool different birds like I knew I'd never really taken notice, but I was always into nature and wildlife ever since I was a little kid.

And so I got into it via via that, but then another important part I think on my birding journey was that I was really interested in photography, a bird photography.

So my dad is was a photographer as I was growing up as a kid and so I was just lucky that he had some really good sort of camera gear that I could just steal out of his bedroom.

And I remember I picked up an old, like dad was not a nature photographer, so he didn't have any sort of zoom, real sort of zoom lenses, but I found that he had like this old 300 millimeter lens that he had to manually focus that he'd used probably in the, I don't know, in the eighties or something for some job that he must have done.

And so I borrowed that and whacked it on one of his old cameras and then started walking around just the suburb I lived in photographing birds and I just fell in love with it straight away like, I know you you have to talk about spark birds on the podcast and for me, like I do have a memory of taking a photo of a silver eye.

And like I remember getting it sort of in focus in the lens and it was just a manual focus.

I was a bit dodgy like, and I remember taking a photo and then looking at it and seeing a silver eye up close and thinking, that belongs in a David Adiver documentary.

This has been outside my house the whole time.

And then I was hooked.

And, you know, we learned from Astrid back a few episodes ago when we were talking to Holly and Astrid who have written a book called this bird that silver eyes travel.

You know, I didn't realize that they're migratory.

I've always just sort of seen them around but didn't clock that they come in seasonally.

So I have new respect for the silver eye.

And I love it when you realize that some of these little birds and these birds that look very inconspicuous can do some amazing things like that.

And it feels funny because the topic of this episode is we're gonna talk about Northern Queensland, and we're here on a quite a cool day in the middle of summer in Melbourne.

So the context is weird, but we'll roll with it.

So you grew up in Canberra, but you now live in Cairns.

Tell like, I don't spend that much time in Cairns doing birding.

And for those people who are listening from overseas, Cairns is in the Northern part of Australia on the East Coast.

So if you think about Queensland and you head north and you keep going, you get, you know, close to the top, that's where Cairns is.

And Cairns is quite popular in Australia tourism wise because it it's a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and lots of other adventures and amazing rainforest like the Daintree.

So you might have heard of it, but where you had the privilege of living, Jonah, which is amazing.

What is it like living in Cairns?

Oh, I'm, yeah, so lucky to live up in Far North Queensland.

It is it's just brilliant.

Like, I I never would have guessed we were talking just before that I never would have guessed how great it is up there.

Like, I think living down growing up down south, unfortunately, I often gave very little thought to Northern Australia because there's a quite a small population I guess across the North Of Australia.

And it's easy to kind of forget how big it is and that it's got such an amazing diversity of of wildlife and incredible places.

So when I moved up there, was sort of blown away by that I think and when I I got there I just yeah.

I initially absolutely fell in love with the place and particularly from a wildlife point of view like, you know, it's one of the most I think there's over 400 species of birds you can see if you go a few 100 kilometers around Cairns, which you know, as you know, is half of Australia's birds.

Incredible.

Absolutely incredible.

And you've got rainforest, you know, you've got the reef as well.

So you've got these amazing ecosystems out out there which support such a diversity of wildlife in general, but obviously, as well bird life.

And it's it's really inspiring place to live if you like wildlife and you like birds.

I'm really lucky.

I live I live in a suburb called Whitfield in Cairns, and it's pretty central, and it is just up the road from the Botanical Garden.

So one thing that blew me away when I got there was that I found out there was like a little kingfisher that lived in the pond down the road.

And you know, I saw it as being into bird, I was like, what do you mean that's just in the pond down the road?

Like that it to me was incredible.

And so the Botanic Gardens is one of my favorite places.

There's, yeah, Centenary Lakes down there and you get all sorts of really cool birds.

You know, you can get Papuan frog mouths, Rufus Owl that live in there sometimes and the little kingfish is one of my favorite birds to see in there.

Do not take it for granted that I can, you know, hop in the car and if I'm lazy and drive two minutes down the road or walk down to the botanical gardens and see like just an incredible variety of birds and you would this would resonate with you and I'm sure a of listeners that when you first move somewhere, that's the most exciting time or you go somewhere new, like the most common birds of that area can become like the most incredible thing to you just because you're not used to them.

是的。

Yeah.

I get that.

Yeah.

I felt that same way when I moved around Australia a little bit and yeah, it's there's something very exciting, but it's nice.

Why are they your vibe?

So I'll start with the little kingfisher.

The one interesting fact about the little kingfisher, which I found out the other day when I was looking a bit more about them is do you know they actually weigh less than a 50¢ coin?

They are tiny little birds.

Yeah.

They are so small and amazing like I think we forget just how light birds are too because they have to be able to fly and so these guys are super light.

They can weigh between sort of 10 to 15 grams, the little kingdger.

And a 50¢ coin is about 15 grams.

And they yeah.

They're beautiful birds.

They if people are familiar with watching kingfishers, which they may or may not be, people might be familiar with like a sacred kingfisher, might be one of the more common ones you'd see.

And then if you've ever seen an Azua kingfisher, it's a bit smaller than the sacred kingfisher.

And then a little kingfisher, I would say looks a lot like an Azua kingfisher.

Okay.

In the way it flies, the way it sort of hangs out, they often sit by water holes and fish like Azuas would.

And then the little kingfisher is noticeably smaller and blue and white.

So rather than having an orange on the chest, it's white on the chest and they're just tiny.

Like they're the second smallest in the world and they are just, yeah, gorgeous to watch.

And they're really lucky like I've got to watch them hunt prawns.

But for now it's amazing seeing such a small bird be a predator.

Like, how cool is that?

Obviously, you just love kingfishers.

Well, okay.

我应该先说明一下，我并不是一个真正的翠鸟迷。

I I should preface this that I'm not a full kingfisher nerd.

对吧？

Right?

我喜欢翠鸟的原因，是百分之百坦诚的，真的。

Like, this is the reason I will tell you that I like kingfishers, a 100 transparent Yeah.

我几个月前才刚开始在Instagram上发帖。

Is I started posting on Instagram just a couple of months ago.

因为我一直喜欢拍鸟，但我觉得拍一些关于观鸟的短视频会很有趣。

Cause I've always done bird photography but I thought it would be fun to do some like vlogs about bird.

说实话，我只是为了好玩，发给我Instagram上的朋友们看，那只是我平常发生活照片的普通账号。

Honestly, I just did it for fun like for my friends on my on my Instagram page like it's just my normal like run of the mill Instagram page where I post photos of me and my life.

然后我拍了几条观鸟的短视频。

And then I did a few like birding vlogs.

然后一些陌生人开始关注我，我觉得天啊，这太奇怪了。

And then random people started following me and I thought like, God, this is strange.

Like I didn't know anyone else was that interested to be honest.

And then I and then I was like trying to work out, okay, well, if I've got a few random people following me, what do other people want to see?

And so I was sort of trying a few things and king kingfishers are very dear to my heart with my bird photography.

They have always been one of my favorite subjects and I've always in my head had a thing where I've wanted to get a really good photo of all of Australia's kingfishers.

I've really wanted to see all of Australia's kingfishers for a long time, but was the reason that I sort of ran with it was I posted I was traveling up I was very lucky to travel up to the Torres Strait Islands and I knew that like there's yellow billed kingfishes around.

It's often easy to to miss a kingfisher and so that's why I love to photograph them because I love to make photos of birds that people might miss Yeah.

So I remember as a little kid looking at that bird guide my grandma gave me and looking at kingfishers and thinking, oh, what is that bird?

And, you know, funny thing, and I'm sure people will relate to this is when you grow up in a place like I mean, I grew up in Canberra or, you know, Melbourne and you're around like bush kind of habitat like you know Canberra have a lot of like sort of box gum grassy woodland although a lot has been cleared like there's patches of that sort of maybe a dominant kind of sort of habitat that you'd see down there.

And for me, I would always sort of dream about seeing the rainforest because just it was just novel for me.

But if you go to the right place Yeah.

Anywhere around Jalatin, up in the Tablelands on Far North Queensland, you can see like I was I was driving up there the other day with a a fantastic bird photographer, Big Sammies Birds and another guy Mitch Spencer up there who had just met to go bird watching.

And we were driving up to Mount Lewis and we saw like, at the start of the drive, we saw literally seven buff breasted parallax kingfishers fly in front of the car in the morning.

Yeah.

This is amazing.

So before when you and I were going for a little walk around the wetland and having a chat, you were telling me a bit about the Cairns Esplanade.

And this this location keeps coming up on Weekend Birder as a spot that people mention.

For someone who's somebody's never been to the Esplanade before, can you just explain what it is and what birds you see there?

It's the first thing you notice when you get to the Cairns Esplanade is a lot of people in camo or like birder gear with massive lenses and big binoculars or scopes.

And it's something that everyone comments, all my non birder friends comment on.

So you get the Eastern Curlew which arrives there in good numbers that you can often see a few of them at the right time of year.
