You're gonna be biased towards the channels that are easiest to track, which are often, you know, the most bottom of funnel digital channels, which means that you won't be able to spend into these other more upper funnel channels that are harder to track.
And that's gonna leave you in a really bad position.
Maybe you can scale the business up to some point only spending on Meta Facebook.
But at some point, you're gonna tap out that channel you're and gonna need to go somewhere else.
And if you don't have a good holistic measurement methodology in place, it's gonna be really hard to do that.

Michael, welcome to the show.
Jacob, thank you for having me.
I am so excited to be here.
My man, not as excited as I am, but we will have an excitement off at the end of the show to see who's seriously jazzed.
Right now, we gotta get into it.
There's a lot of talk about effectiveness in marketing, but I wanted to start with you maybe giving me like explaining a bit of the difference between efficiency and effectiveness in marketing because I think a lot of people maybe don't get this or why don't you just go for it?
是的。
Yeah.
Well, I think part of the reason why people are confused about it is because I think everyone is confused about it.
I hear these words, efficiency and effectiveness thrown around.
They're used by different people to mean different things.
I took a little bit about the conversation that we had earlier about how we sort of have been talking about it, which is efficiency is really this idea about do more with less.
How can you sort of optimize the current dollars that you have?
Obviously, a really important concept.
And then effectiveness is sort of a little bit more broad.
Right?
How do we think in general about measuring the effectiveness of our marketing spend, not just sort of cranking down, right, getting every little last drop, but also potentially expanding into new channels and doing new things.
And so, again, depending on exactly who you're talking to, these words might mean slightly different things.
But I think that for the purposes of today's conversation between Jacob and I, that idea of, like, efficiency being get every last drop and then effectiveness being a little bit more broad in terms of how do we think overall about maximizing marketing impact, that's probably how we're gonna use those terms today.
没错。
Totally.
And I mean, it just is are they opposites?
You know, like, if you wanna be effective, you gotta pay a lot.
If you wanna be efficient, you could just do whatever you want for free.
You know what I mean?
I'm I'm just, like, thinking, like, if you really wanna be effective, do you have to spend money?
But maybe isn't efficiency a way to get to effectiveness?
I I think efficiency is definitely a part of effectiveness.
Right?
没错。
Right.
You want you know, I think we probably all want to be as efficient as possible in the long run as marketers.
Right?
The in the long run there is important because sometimes getting to an overall higher level of efficiency or effectiveness requires being a little less efficient in the short term to get learnings, figure out what works.
Very important concept.
没错。
Absolutely.
But in the long run, we all want to be as efficient and and as effectiveness as possible.
And the efficiency of some given marketing channel or some ad is definitely gonna be a part of your overall effectiveness journey trying to maximize the total amount of value you're creating in the world.
Man, just be beautifully said.
I mean, we know how to measure efficiency.
It's we are doing the same thing.
Output, we're shipping, it's good, and we're doing it with less or we're doing it smarter, not harder.
But when we're talking about measuring marketing effectiveness, what what goes into that?
How how how are you properly getting those metrics?
Where do you look?
What do you do?
Go.
Look.
This is a great question, and there's a ton of really smart people who spent a lot of time on this.
My, like, personal viewpoint is probably a little bit more narrow because I'm really interested in this particular topic of M and M.
But effectiveness can include all kinds of different things, including things like attention metrics, right, which have been really hot in the last couple of years.
Thinking really hard about audience reach.
Who are you talking to?
Why?
What stage of the funnel are they at?
Right?
All of these things are important to measure and start to think about, okay, how are we gonna build a really effective holistic marketing engine?
And then where I spend a lot of time focused really is on that very tight intersection of efficiency and effectiveness.
When we spend a $100, what does that actually get us?
Us?
How do we measure that correctly?
How do we use that to make decisions?
How do we make smart bets?
That's the corner of the world that I tend to operate in in the in the realm of marketing effectiveness and efficiency.
对。
Mhmm.
And let so let's just get into that because, I mean, attention metrics, that's a new sort of darling term that's coming out.
And then is another one that you're like, okay, cool.
So there's like a bunch of advanced math that now needs to happen.
And a lot of a lot of marketers are like, ah.
They're dodging behind their drama and arts backgrounds to be like, uh-oh.
How much math is there?
If somebody's confused about marketing mix modeling, what do you do?
Do you have like an elevator pitch for it?
对。
Yeah.
So marketing mix modeling, look, first of all, it's not for everyone.
And so, for a lot of the people who are listening to this, might not be right for you.
I think works really well and is really important part of the tool set for bigger brands spending $5.10 plus million dollars a year on paid marketing.
But for a lot of brands, it just doesn't make sense.
It's too complex.
The return on investment of, like, doing an isn't really there, and so you shouldn't focus your time there.
So I wanna lay that out front.
Like, I wouldn't pitch this tool to everyone.
For the people who who it might be interesting to, one way to think about is it's just a really good structured way of continuously measuring incrementality of your different marketing channels without relying on digital tracking.
So most probably a lot of people who are listening to this this podcast are familiar with attribution or digital tracking mess methods.
You follow people across the Internet.
What do they click on?
What do they view prior to purchase?
And then you assign credit.
That can work okay in certain circumstances.
But more complex brands that have online and offline channels, maybe they have online and offline distribution channels as well, can't really rely on that.
And then, you know, with iOS 14.5 and other changes to the privacy landscape, it's difficult to track people across the Internet, so you don't really know what they viewed or clicked on prior to purchase.
对的。
Right.
Anyways, so is a top down statistical model where you're just gonna look at historical patterns in your marketing activity.
Some days, you know, you spend a little bit more on Facebook.
Some days, you spend a little bit more on Google search.
Maybe in April, you ran a CTV campaign.
Maybe in September, you did a big YouTube push, whatever that is.
Right?
There are all of these historical changes that have happened.
And then you're gonna use statistics to look at the patterns in that data.
In April, when you did that CTV campaign, how much higher was revenue than you would've than you would've expected controlling for all of the other marketing activity.
September, when you did the YouTube push, how much additional revenue or additional conversions were generated controlling for seasonality and everything else.
And so once you start to pull the you can use an as a statistical tool to pull all of those pieces of information together to start to get a read on incrementality without relying on trying to track people across the Internet, which can be very difficult to do for video channels or if you have sales on a channel like Amazon where there's no touch based tracking.
没错。
Right.
I mean and so marketing mix modeling is like the heart of the work of getting towards forecasting, of getting towards better media buys, kind of planning strategy.
I mean, how does that all go into effectiveness?
I mean, it's it's you it's obvious.
You just do the math and you figure it out.
I mean, did I just answer my question?
Well, I mean, do the math and figure it out.
It's obviously masking a fair amount of complexity.
Think That's true.
Idea here is that when done well, a marketing mix model can be one central location that pulls together all of the information that you have.
And then exactly as you mentioned, can be used for forecasting, planning, and most importantly, budgeting optimization.
What would happen?
What do we believe would happen if we take money out of this one channel and reallocate it to this other one?
When should we spend in the year in order to maximize effectiveness given our expected seasonality?
Maybe we wanna spend more in the summer and less in the winter.
And this sort of model can really help you think through that in a structured way.
I think prior to setting up an a lot of companies, they have this like crazy Google Sheet, you know, with all of these different columns and then tons of assumptions built in, and they're like, okay, well what if we do this and that?
And it's not very internally consistent and it can lead to suboptimal planning.
And so as companies mature or their marketing organizations mature, they want something that's a little bit more structured that has a more holistic view of the world and will allow them to do that higher level planning and optimization, as opposed to just trying to like tweak a bunch of sales in this crazy Google spreadsheet that can be really difficult to manage once you're in a whole bunch of different channels.
没错。
Absolutely.
Getting people on the same page, critical.
So you've mentioned iOS five.
14.5.
Oh, right.
对。
Yes.
没错。
That's right.
You know what I meant?
Everyone out sleeping outside of the Apple store is like, he's wrong.
Well, get a life, friends.
No.
I'm just kidding.
Please do your thing.
Buy all the iPhones.
That the coming cookie pocalypse, you know, tracking first party data, third party data, all of these things are coming our way.
Then you got your AIs, and then you got your GPTs.
What kind of future concerns do you see coming our way in the world of measuring marketing effectiveness?
I mean, what what's what's what's
what's the Kaminsky stance?
I mean, this is a thing that I think a lot of people are familiar with, which is that with the limited visibility and the sort of lack of ability to track people across devices, or let's say reduced ability to track people across devices, and use the different individual identifiers, whether those are sort of cookie based or other things.
It's it's gotten a lot harder over the last couple of years, and it seems like it's only gonna get harder over the next couple of years.
You have that.
So that's one problem.
And the other problem is just marketing channel fragmentation.
Right?
So you've got walled gardens, like Facebook and Snapchat and TikTok, and then you've got, you know, other channels that are starting to open up, whether that's connected TV or just Netflix or other video providers.
Right?
There's all of these different channels that marketers now need to manage and stitching, a user's journey across all of those different platforms has gotten really hard and, again, is only gonna get worse and harder.
And so between those two things, marketers need to think really hard about what measurement methods they're they're using to try to get at this concept of effectiveness.
And if you are operating in all of these different channels, I would say it is very unlikely that you're actually going to be able to see all of the different relic relevant touch points on a customer's potential journey.
Just you're gonna miss some because they're on some device or they're at someone's house or whatever.
Right?
They're in some walled garden that has a different way of tracking than the other walled garden.
And so if you're basing all of your budgeting decisions off of like a touch based attribution model, and you know that you're missing a bunch of touches, well, you're gonna have problems, right?
And you're gonna be biased towards the channels that are easiest to track, which are often, you know, the most bottom of funnel digital channels, which means that you won't be able to spend into these other more upper funnel channels that are harder to track.
And that's gonna leave you in a really bad position.
Maybe you can scale the business up to some point only spending on Meta Facebook.
But at some point, you're gonna tap out that channel and you're gonna need to go somewhere else.
And if you don't have a good holistic measurement methodology in place, it's gonna be really hard to do that.
And I've seen this over and over and over again with a lot of the brands that I work with where they get stuck.
The finance team and the executive team only knows about last touch attribution.
And then when it comes to doing anything else, they can't because the finance and the executive team is like, well, everything else looks terrible on last touch basis, but that doesn't mean it's actually a bad channel.
It just means the measurement method is actually bad.
And so that can be a real problem.
So as people are thinking about the future, I want them to be thinking about, okay, how do we get out of this world where we're just doing everything on last touch attribution, which has always been flawed and is only getting worse.
对。
Yes.
Just I'm I'm feeling like somebody in the back of the room standing up slowly clapping.
You know?
But also not knowing why they're clapping or what is to be applauded because there is so much complication already in this world.
So you're like, why?
For smaller folks out there, I mean, enterprise people, you have a data team.
You have people that are in there maybe perchance by the blessings of the higher powers.
You have data governance.
You have some kind of way that you approach data.
But for the other people, are they just like kind of like you just got to get a spreadsheet going and kind of cook it up?
And like, I mean, out there scrappy, no resources.
Is marketing mix modeling or an approach to something that resembles that?
I mean, of course, it should be for them.
But marketing mix modeling is when you reach a scale that you can't do it with your web brain.
Is that kinda what you're saying?
That's that's probably right.
But I think, again, you know, the small companies or solo operators or whoever it is, like, you have an advantage in that things are relatively simple for you.
And so you can do a lot with just a spreadsheet.
And you just need to be thoughtful about what you're doing.
And, you know, a good way to do it is like, okay, if we're gonna launch a new channel, like, let's do a before and after comparison.
When we launched this new channel, did sales go up or not?
Like, you can sort of look at your overall metrics, ask those sorts of questions, do that sort of analysis.
It'll be rough and, you know, it won't be perfect, but that's totally fine.
For the stage that you're at as a business, you want these, like, directional signals, and you can do that pretty well in a spreadsheet.
And you can start to think about basic experiments that aren't really that hard to set up.
You can do geo lift tests where we'll hold out half the country from this channel for a couple of weeks and see what happens.
These are all you don't need a PhD in statistics to run and analyze that sort of experiment.
You can do it in Excel.
It will not be perfect, and that's okay.
But getting into this mode of thinking about one incrementality, right, which is the thing that actually matters, don't rely only on touch based attribution.
And then two, thinking about how can we do smart experiments?
And again, don't have to be perfect.
They can be rough and ready.
Let's boost up spend in this channel for a month and see what happens.
Did sales go up as much as we expect or not?
That sort of learning can be, you know, game changing for a business.
And since you're, again, we're talking a lot to like sort of the smaller operators here.
Right.
Since you're a small business, it's easier to do that because you're only in a couple of channels.
If you're only in three channels, there's less assumptions you have to make in order to run an okay experiment and get some lessons.
And so I would say definitely go do that.
Take advantage of your size to go take these swings.
Again, if it's not perfect, that's fine.
Get a directional read, double down, go run to the next thing.
Like, you can do that sort of stuff and be really fast and efficient in a way that a lot of the your bigger competitors maybe can't be.
Cannot.
And one thing that's hitting me is marketing.
It's so complex nowadays.
This is not this is not easy.
And the way you're talking makes it seem like we're headed back to an era where you could only ascertain directions and, you know, kind of trajectories from the things you could track, which were sales, which were like these hard metrics that you're experiencing on the other end internally from your marketing campaigns.
But for some weird reason, for the last, like, I don't know, twenty years, you know, maybe a little bit over, you know, fifteen years, we've been given this thought that, hey, you can track it easy here on Google.
We got it.
Hey, we can track it easy on Instagram.
Oh, you don't have to worry about that.
We got analytics.
Want all that?
We got it.
And we all, like, jumped in the boat, you know, and yeah.
Amazon.
I got a dashboard.
And you're like, well, then word.
We're just gonna put everything into the place where we know we can measure.
Now, do you know the quality of the traffic that you're getting?
Just like we were talking before we hit record.
Sometimes paid ads, yeah, you're gonna get a bunch of traffic, but it's not high quality.
Maybe something lower budget, you could get higher quality leads, but you'd only know that if you really worked with the sales department, if you really worked on the back end.
And I think it's interesting because we've been we just rolled up a bunch of technology and smoked it, and now we're headed back to this place where we're saying, hold on.
You know, I I you you just said something that really hit me.
It's like you're going to put money towards the places where you're guaranteed a metric.
I don't care if it's a quality metric.
It's a metric.
And I can bring this to the shareholders or the c suite or my clients and say, it looks pretty good.
You know?
I mean, do you feel like we're maybe headed towards a place where we were before all this technology?
Like, you know what I mean?
对。
Yes.
Absolutely.
没错。
Yeah.
Absolutely.
I mean, you know, if you think about it, companies like Pepsi and Coke, right, they don't sell a lot on ecommerce.
They have probably never really thought very hard about last touch attribution just because who buys a Coke at coke.com?
我反正从来没去过 coke.com。
Like, I've I've never been to coke.com.
I don't know if coke.com is even their website.
Like, one does that.
Right?
So that's not a thing.
And so a lot of the biggest brands that we know and are familiar with, right, have been have never had the ability to, like, look at the Google Analytics dashboard and be like, where's my last touch at what's my last touch cost per act Ever.
Like Coke does not think that way ever.
And so for them, it's not really like a change.
They're just gonna continue to do that.
And I think, you know, exactly as you mentioned, the last fifteen years, we saw the rise of e commerce.
We saw a lot of like great, brands built on the back of running Google and Facebook ads and building brands that way.
Very cool.
But I do think it's an aberration.
I think the future is omni channel, Right?
And it's omnichannel in terms of distribution.
You're gonna sell on your.com website.
You're gonna sell on amazon.com.
You're gonna sell on walmart.com.
You're gonna sell on whatever other vendors that are gonna come in the future.
You're gonna sell in store, like you're gonna have that full mix.
And so the idea that we're gonna be able to track everyone, see every, you know, marketing touch point before they purchase just doesn't make any sense in that world, I don't think.
And so I do think that, like, there was this fifteen year period and a lot of marketers who are probably listening to this podcast, this is all they know.
Right?
So it's all you know.
But really, if you look at the whole history of marketing and advertising, it really is an aberration.
And so I think people are gonna start turning back to these other methodologies that have been around for a long time.
Experimentation, right, goes back to the earliest days of direct mail advertising.
People have been thinking about how do we run an experiment?
How do we measure the true lift of this?
对。
Right.
So like, this stuff is all coming back.
Experimentation, marketing mix modeling also been around for fifty plus years.
These are the tools that marketers need to have in a well rounded tool set.
I think, again, digital tracking will always be important, right?
Especially for some brands that are pure e commerce or pure digital products.
Like that's an important thing.
It's never gonna go away, but you need to bring in these other tools into the toolbox to help get that full well rounded triangulated picture from these different sources in order to really know what's most effective for your business.
Quote bomb.
Share some stories because you've been talking a lot about the shop, what goes into those things, top down statistical blivity blops.
Look.
Just give me a good story.
Can you share a story about a client that, like, really took the beast of marketing effectiveness to heart and made a beautiful change?
And conversely, do you have a marketing effectiveness horror story?
I mean, I probably have more horror stories than anything else.
Just because that's with a lot of time talking to a lot of people.
Typical?
Look, I mean, we've seen all kinds of things and a lot of them, I think, you know, are things that people would expect.
But we've got, you know, I've worked with a client that's omnichannel.
They sell online, they sell in stores, and they had been running the business off of effectively a last touch attribution type model.
Even though the .com part of their business was like a really small part of the overall business once you accounted for in store and Amazon and these other channels.
Interesting.
And it turned out that actually some of their, like, in in that last attribution, their digital channels looked amazing.
Right?
Those are easily their best channels.
Facebook looks great because Facebook is really good at, you know, sending people to a .com store.
But it turned out that, like, other offline channels were actually better for the overall business once you accounted for their impact on in store sales, which aren't trackable.
So things like radio, right, which people listen to in their car on the way to the store don't drive .com sales very well, but they do drive in store sales very well.
There's like an obvious reason for that.
Same thing with, some of the TV channels, right?
Which again are more awareness building.
They help someone make a decision about the brand they're gonna purchase in the store, but less likely to drive someone directly to the .com site.
And so this brand was able to like really change their marketing mix based on what was actually driving the business forward.
And it's better for them because, you know, everyone, every brand is now on Facebook.
Those CPMs have gotten really expensive.
A lot fewer brands are advertising on radio and certain, you know, at least certain TV channels or certain versions of connected TV.
And so you can actually get more efficient by working in these channels that other people are scared to because they don't have the last touch attribution associated with them very well.
And so we've seen stories like that happen a number of different times with a number of different brands being able to optimize towards these more, you know, quote unquote traditional marketing channels.
没错。
Yep.
Because they've been able to wean themselves off of just looking at the Google Analytics touch based attribution report.
And but isn't it isn't it BS saying you can't measure TV?
You can't measure radio?
Fool.
Tell me if you sold some stuff And then you measured it.
Good day.
Am I am I am I being too simple?
没有。
No.
I mean, I think, like, I think a lot of people have this view that it's you can't measure it.
It's impossible.
Right.
A lot of people well, again, it's not gonna show up in your Google Analytics.
没错。
Yeah.
It's not gonna be a dashboard.
It's not gonna look It's not gonna it's not gonna be there.
You're gonna have to do something different.
And so is it gonna be as easy to and I'll put, you know, measure in square codes.
Not gonna measure it the same way you're gonna measure Facebook.
Right?
And it's not gonna show up, and it's not gonna be as easy as just dropping a pixel on your website.
But if you measure it correctly via experimentation or via some of these other measurement methods, then you can measure it.
And you can actually measure it better than what you're getting from your last touch attribution report because you're measuring the thing you actually care about.
And so there are ways to measure for these channels.
They can drive huge impacts for businesses, again, that I've seen.
没错。
Right.
And so the people who say you can't measure it are just totally wrong.
You just have to measure it differently.
You have to measure it in a sort of slightly more deliberate way.
But overall, I think it's a better approach.
God.
You're so smart.
And listener, if you you should just see Michael's haircut.
It is gorgeous.
Okay?
So he's smart.
He's good looking, but he's deficient because he didn't give me a horror story.
Do you have, like, a horror story?
Like, give
give me,
like, a flaming dumpster fire, bro.
I mean, I've seen the same horror story a million times, right, which is it's these companies, and I alluded to it earlier, it's these companies that are married to Last Touch attribution.
They've grown a decent sized business.
对。
Right.
Basically advertising only on Facebook and Google search.
对。
Right.
And then the business sort of like gets up to a certain level, which is pretty big.
Like you can build a big business this way, but then it sort of flatlines, growth flatlines because they've tapped out those two channels.
They are not able to expand anymore.
And then the business gets stuck because they can't spend on any other channels because it doesn't fit into their last touch attribution framework.
没错。
Yep.
They can't create any more demand.
They can't reach any other audiences.
And then they end up like flatlining, the business growth stalls and things go terribly for them from that point forward.
That's, again, I've seen this story play out multiple times this And it's really sad because these, you know, these businesses, they have really cool products.
If they could just get the organizational wherewithal to go out and test these other new marketing channels, try to find what else might work for them, they could continue to grow.
But because they're changed to last touch attribution and this certain way of measuring things that really only works for one or two marketing channels, they're just never able to make that leap.
They're never able to sort of reach the ambitions that the company originally had.
And so that's the story that I've seen way, way, way too many times.
对。
Right.
That's one.
And I'll give you another one.
I've seen a lot of brands that have just thrown away huge amounts of money on certain marketing channels because either the last of attribution looked good or even worse, that marketing channel's internal platform was like, this channel is incredibly performing for you.
You should continue spending.
And because they don't have any other way of measuring it, they're like, okay, sure, I guess, we'll trust whatever this platform is telling us.
And it's terrible.
They had turn off spend, revenue stays flat.
It was literally doing nothing for them.
I've seen this again, times.
A lot of my friends in the industry have seen this multiple times and it's just like, it's sad, right?
Because these businesses are spending millions of dollars a year on these marketing channels that are doing nothing incremental for them.
And, of course, the advertising channel itself in their in platform reporting, they're gonna show you whatever makes the platform look as good as possible so you continue spending money there.
But you need these, like, external ways of validating that to avoid wasting huge amounts of dollars.
Man, and I was just thinking, if you make a call for this, switching from last click to more incrementality, you can get a bigger budget.
You could like, it's not only it's not only, like, you can make more sales, but maybe if you set this in place, you can prove that you're worth more money so you can get more money.
So I think there's something like there's also a call for marketers to kinda embrace this stuff because you could increase your ability to do your job.
And if you don't, and then also here's here's my other thing.
So that's a proof point.
We all get it.
You're nodding.
He's nodding audience.
But here's my second question.
If you are at a place and you've been running last click attribution for a while, years, How do you get people off that train?
Because it looks good.
It looks good, Mike.
You're telling
me It's this it's a it's a look.
It's a really addictive drug that last distribution report.
Let me tell you about it.
Think so a couple of different points here.
So first of all, I think marketers, CMOs, you know, top to bottom really need to put on their, like, CFO finance hat as they're thinking about the world and making the case for marketing budget.
I totally agree with what you were saying, which is that there's a lot of opportunity for marketers to get more budget.
But the days of where you could just point out like, oh, look at how many impressions we got.
That must be doing something.
Or like, we won an award at Cannes.
Those days are going away.
Darn.
Marketers need to get more analytical when they're making the case for this additional budget.
I think that budget is there.
I think there's a lot of great cases to be made, but it's just gonna be different than what was, you know, what might've worked ten, twenty plus years ago.
没错。
Yep.
And so the way to do that is to start to talk about incrementality, which really just means cause and effect with the organization.
When we do this on marketing, here is the effect that we get.
Here is how we're gonna measure it.
You marketers have to start educating the rest of your business on how this actually works and throw out those vanity metrics, right?
Get rid of them, tell people, hey, don't focus on that.
And that can be a little hard, right?
Because the vanity metrics like look good and, you know, we're all fain people.
I definitely am.
没错。
Totally.
But they will get you into trouble.
As a marketer, they will get you into trouble because you will train the organization to look at those vanity metrics and to think about them and not be focused on the right thing.
And the right thing is tough because sometimes it won't look good and you're gonna have to, like, eat that and that sucks.
But it will be good overall for you, for your career, and for your organization if you get people to think about true incrementality, right, which is measuring things.
When we do this, here is how that benefits the business.
没错。
Right.
Right?
We can prove that with an experiment.
When we run ads in this market and not in this market, here's what the difference is.
And that's how we know that it's actually working.
But you need to educate the organization as a whole on why that's the important metric to be looking at, how you're gonna evaluate it, get really rigorous and get them off of those vanity metrics.
Because again, in the long run, those vanity metrics are gonna hurt you.
Better to pull the band aid off now, start to think about incrementality, start to think about experimentation and measurement, and that's what's gonna set you up for success in the long run.
Oh, man.
This last question, it's what's your one piece of advice when it comes to marketing effectiveness?
I think you just gave it.
I think I just gave it.
It's incrementality.
Everything is about incrementality.
That's the thing that matters, cause and effect.
Think about that for every single decision that you're making.
Try to think about how much revenue do we think this is gonna drive.
If we did do it, if we didn't do it, what is that delta?
That's the thing that matters.
Counting impressions, vanity metric, get rid of it, doesn't matter.
It can be a useful tool, right, to think about it, right?
Like impressions can be Sure.
是的。
Sure.
对。
Sure.
But it's it's not something to share out.
The thing to share out is cause and effect.
We spent a $100,000 on marketing.
We got $800,000 in revenue.
Great, that's a win.
Cool, onto the next thing.
That's the right way to think about actually measuring marketing effectiveness.
And then my other advice to marketers is be skeptical, right?
Think like a scientist.
How could this measurement be misleading you?
How can you sort of get at the problem from multiple different angles so that you won't be misled?
That's what I think the next generation of marketers really need to do is to be skeptical, look for proof, look for ways to disprove what they currently believe, and then think about how to communicate that out to the rest of the organization.
If you can do that really well, I think, you know, you're gonna be able to get more budget, spend more money, drive your business even further forward, and that's what's actually important.
对。
Yeah.
And then you bring receipts too.
You know?
没错。
Exactly.
Like it's receipts, friends.
That's what we need.
Man, you are amazing.

Yeah.
Well, so first of all, LinkedIn, definitely give me a follow, give me a connection.

Cheese or chocolate?
Are you ready?
I'm ready.
Cheese or chocolate?
Cheese.
Escalator or stairs?
Escalator.
Alright.
Little lazy, but I get it.
You've done the math.
I should do the stairs.
I've been every day I think about it.
I'm like, God, I've really got to start to force myself to take the stairs, but it's all I always take the escalator.
You got to do a geo lift experimentation to see if it's better for you.
Anyway
It would definitely be better for me.
I know it.
I just every single time I'm faced with a choice, it's escalator every time.
The wrong vanity metrics over there.
Okay.
Cargo pants or self respect?
Gotta go with the self respect on this one.
The way I phrase that, I
was like, oh, bro.
I hope he's not wearing cargo pants.
没有。
No.
I would never.
I have three pairs of black jeans.
Those are the only pants I wear.
We're good.
Hosting a party or ghosting a party?
Oh, ghosting.
Know.
Irish goodbye, peace out, bye.
Yeah, out of it.
没错。
Yeah.
Folk or funk?
Various by day, but I'll go with funk for the day.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
It's it's just feeling poppy.
You're feeling fresh.
The mothership.
行。
Okay.
And finally, breakfast in bed or no food where you snooze?
No food where you snooze.
Crumbs in the bed is not a good it's not a good feeling.
It's the it's like, you wanna eat toast in
床?
bed?
不了。
No.
I want That's an that's insanity.
I cannot imagine toast in bed.
