Well, scientists at NASA have been tracking lightning storms all around the world for the past seventeen years as part of a program called the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission or TRMM for short.

So what these scientists did is team up with Japanese scientists from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.
