When I came back with the big trophy of religion, when I saw my parents, they were both crying.
They were not happy?
They were not happy.
This world, they don't know how it works.
Easy life going forward of me, like, there will be a doctor, doesn't matter, he will be a doctor.
And then now I said, no, I want to do that.
We came in in twenty thirteen, thirteen building our own car at home in Torsbury, again with a new team, new mechanics, a whole new setup.
It was amazing.
And then talk about working day and night.
We fell asleep on the workshop floor.
With Colin, we were like very close friends, so partying, riding bike, and Colin was incredibly good at everything, you know.
You you go skiing, you would a knife skid, and you pick up skid.
You go walk skiing.
Within two days, he beat everyone in a jet ski, and and we
Tell me you beat him at something, Christian.
没有。
No.
Welcome to WRC Backstories, our exclusive World Rally Championship podcast presented by Bex Williams.
I want you all to imagine around the world that you are here at Rally Finland, one of the most iconic events on the championship calendar.
It's rally week.
The atmosphere outside our commentary booth right now is electric.
It's crazy.
People love this event.
We all love commentating on it.
But I am taking an hour out of the craziness, the wildness to sit down for Backstories podcast.
And I've been wanting to speak to this man all year, but he's extremely busy.
He's a man in demand at the moment, and that is former team boss of the Hyundai World Rally team, Andrea Rodamo.
Andrea, finally, we've looped you in to a backstories podcast to learn a little bit more about your history because I think many people out there will know a lot about you in the past few years, but maybe not so much what happened before you became the rather frightening head of the Hyundai World Rally team.
Firstly, thank you for joining me.
How are you?
Thank you for inviting me.
I'm pretty well.
Thank you.
是的。
Yeah.
I'm I used to say I'm the most busy retired man that I know.
Will never retire.
You'll never retire.
I pretend and try to, but it looks like somehow, as always, and now even more than ever, passion is driving me a bit, so I'm going on saying yes to everything and then I squeeze myself in the way I was a bit okay, much less responsibility fortunately and much more relaxed life, I'm improve a lot, I behaved much better and let me say, these last years have been after, let me say, how could I say, you know, gave me the opportunity to think a lot and you know when you have the opportunity to to go through different things, it would be a pity to waste the opportunity you get without be better than before so I try to be.
I and I'm sure you are.
But like I mentioned at the top, we wanna find out a bit more about your life because I got to know you when you came into the championship, and I think our first meeting was probably at the launch of the championship in Birmingham Yep.
At the NEC, and that would have been at right at the start of 2019.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
Anyway, before we talk about all of that, the the one thing I do with my guests, before we discover more about their life, before we delve into their past, into their history, I ask every single guest to describe themselves, Andrea.
But but you haven't got the floor here.
You haven't got as many words as you would like, and I know you like words.
You've only got three to tell me your personality, your character.
Who is Andrea Adamo in three words?
投入。
Committed.
Mhmm.
直率。
Straightforward.
It's beautiful usable.
是的。
Yes.
Mean, it it depend are we are we saying you're beautiful to look at or a beautiful human?
I hope no.
I'm not you are Italian.
没错。
Exactly.
The tree is difficult.
You know?
公平。
Fair.
公平。
Fair.
So straightforward.
公平。
Fair.
What was the first one?
I've forgotten there already.
I forgot already.
Anyhow, we will listen with you.
Believe me.
There was a phrase I we recorded Mads Osberg as the last one.
We were sat here in my commentary booth, and I was trying to think of the phrase oh, no.
And I've forgotten it already.
I do it's just in my head, and now it's gone.
It's a bad thing.
什么?
What?
This is what happens when you get older.
Honestly, there's something in your brain and then it's impostor syndrome.
That's what I was trying to think of.
When you you feel like you're in a role or you've been in a role for however many years, but you're all of a sudden, you get underconfident and you feel you shouldn't be in that role and you get impostor syndrome.
You're an impostor in your own life.
I could not think of that phrase.
And we advertised the podcast and the amount of people that messaged on social media saying, impostor syndrome.
Impostor syndrome was what you were trying to say or think of at the time.
But, anyway, Andrea, let's let's talk about the young Andrea O'Damo.
So way before any of motorsport came into your life, We're back home.
We're in Italy.
You're being brought up by your parents.
I wanna know about the young Andrea.
I can't even imagine you as a young child.
See, I'm seeing you with no hair as a young child.
How is that right in my head?
I will send you a picture of myself.
We will we will advertise the podcast with it.
是的。
Yeah.
I will send it.
I was 18 years old, and it was the first time I was a a goofer in Jolly Club.
The picture I have, and of course, has been done by a photographer in Italy.
Incidentally, I was assigned my dad.
Because if I have to say, to split be me between a motorsport and myself is complicated because basically, my dad and the cousin of my dad that was the son of the hound of my dad that was basically growing up, me and my sister because she's we spent all the time with her.
They were both really fast because I was born in Kuneo in a small town, let me say, in the mountains, but not so mountain, the start of the mountain valley, let me say, and Raleigh was pretty high on those days.
Even if I look younger, I was born in '71 and in those days, Raleigh was a bit wild, let me say.
And basically, we live on the 1st Floor of a building at which there was a a bar, a pub at the where was that was the the meeting point of the rally drivers in those days.
In those days, you have these scuderia teams.
No?
Everyone has got their own cars and they met.
是的。
Yeah.
And, basically, they were driving with their rally cars.
So my mom was always telling that she starts to hate cars in those days because when she was able to make me sleep, they were arriving with big noise exhaust open exhaust, etcetera, etcetera, and there was nobody waking up.
Incidentally, not crying, just waking up.
It was it was a sign of your future career, obviously.
I don't know, but something like this.
So basically, my my dad and my let me say my cousin, it was a cousin of my dad, were were going only to see San Remorelli, Monte Carlo Relli and they were doing services in these small teams there and my I remember my hound preparing sandwiches and the bags with the thermos of tea, coffee, whatever for the nights there, because in those days, really, were pretty in the night, you know, and so for us was all an excitement and up on everything I have some flashes of those days.
One is being brought me and my sister by my hound and another cousin to see the rally of national championship was translated 100,000 Trabuki.
Trabuki is a local dimension length.
And we were four years, but yeah, three years my So there is a picture in this coat trickles in those days, I think my mom and aunt were putting a coat in August, remove it in July the year after.
So we have fifteen days for them of summer and scarf everything.
And we were we are there on the barriers watching these cars there and this is a flash I have.
And to tell you another example, when we behave at school, it was the in Italy elementary school, primary school.
是的。
Yeah.
So we
were seven years old, things like this.
If we would have behaved properly on Saturday afternoon, my cousin were bringing me and my sister to see the Lancia Stratos of Montaldo.
That was a guy of these teams, the one that had the car.
And so this was the the price for having behaved.
So I have a picture of me and my sister aside that these Stratos in 7879.
And how old would you have been then?
I was seven years old, eight years old.
So, you know, it's difficult to to split me.
And I remember having model cars that I was really playing, but not playing, destroying, playing with the maximum respect because for me, where the the the launch of the Fiat and my dad having worked for Fiat, having been a designer in Fiat, there was a Fiat supporter, exposing with whom I was spending much of the time.
He was a Lancia supporter, so I remember this model car of Burago, it's the brand of a Lancia Stratos of Monte Carlo '75 with the number 14 on the doors and watching at it like a ball, something that you cannot touch, like a big thing.
And that was the way I was growing up with always the possibility to look pictures of the magazines in Italy.
We had auto sprint and asking things.
The first year that I started to, let me say, to understand a bit more, I clearly remember was, let me say, '2, but mostly '83.
That was the year since I have a really, like, a step in my life, I can say.
I was 12 years old.
I know.
Sorry.
But it was the year that Lancia zero three seven was fighting against Audi and winning the title, the manufactured title.
That for me was always the early title.
The rest is pizza for media.
And so for me, it was something that I was following all year long with the possibility that we had.
It was a magazine, DG news, things like this.
And at the end of the year, there was the yearly book, you know, that every magazine magazine does, does, and and it it was was the rally yearly book.
And I remember Sergio Limone presenting the zero three seven without the front and rear bonnets to show the things.
And I remember saying, I will be a race car engineer.
I was 83, 12 years old.
Oh, for how?
That was the decision that I took, and I planned my life since then.
And I remember clearly when I was And
you were 12?
I was 12 then.
是的。
Yeah.
And I remember when I was 15, I started then what is the college?
And now I did a technical school because I was not sure that I would be able to to do university because you never know.
I said I start to do technical.
But I can imagine you were pretty good in school, though.
You strike me as someone who is good at every subject.
You were we we call it in The UK when someone is very studious and applies themselves.
We call them a bit of a SWAT in that they're always applying themselves and they're good at everything.
Were you or were you not?
Were you particularly bad at some subjects?
I always consider myself lucky lucky and I still today consider myself very lucky.
I always say the day the destiny will present the beer will be tricky.
I thought it happened already, but it wasn't.
I consider myself lucky having the possibility to study.
好的。
Okay.
And so I don't consider myself particularly smart of things.
I always studied a lot.
But I consider big plus having the possibility to study, and I really dedicated a lot of time studying.
I like to study, something more, something less.
And I was quite good at school.
是的。
Yeah.
Did did anything come easily to you?
Like, for instance, I'll use myself as as an example here.
I don't do it so much anymore, but I'm very good at drawing.
And it was something that came very easily at school, and I never had to practice so much.
And, you know, I I did all my kind of my art classes and was top of the class and everything.
It was something I didn't have to try at doing.
Was there something you didn't have to try at that you were just naturally good at without all of the studying?
Let me say, I I designing is something I'm good, but let me say, I'm not good designing a horse.
但是
But
I'm good designing
that it was something that I always luckily was able to design mechanical stuff, bodywork stuff, etcetera.
好的。
Okay.
And when I was, let me say, years years after in other things like this, I was designing in the evening, early nights, the ideas that I had by hand, things like this, and I was leaving these papers on my designer's desk in the morning, they had this.
And I have still lots of notebook at home, and the time to time I'm chasing something and I find and I designing suspension layout upright, dumper things, with all the shades of the things.
哇。
Wow.
是的。
Yeah.
And I and I did it many times.
Do you know what?
There was I remember a couple of occasions when you were still at Hyundai when I would come to you and ask about various things.
And I'm a very visual person.
It helps for me for someone to draw something for me to understand it rather than tell me about it.
And I remember you drawing me various elements of the car to explain things.
It's always something that I try to do to to my people to to have ideas and there's a nice story about this end sketch that we can mention later.
是的。
Yeah.
当然。
Definitely.
It's couple of Hyundai's.
So But
this is another movie.
So coming back, I was 14, 15 years old and I remember dinner once my dad and mom, I guess, to protect myself, were saying, you know, it's nice that you have a target in life.
不。
No.
It's different.
They said to that you have a dream in life and I told them, I don't have a dream.
I have a target.
It's different.
And it's like, because, you know, in life, it may happen that you don't get it and but it doesn't mean that your life will be bad.
No one and I remember clearly having the soup, listen to them, let them speak a good forty five minutes as I think parents try to protect you from life.
是的。
Yeah.
当然。
Sure.
Then they're looking after your best interests.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
I say, anyhow, thank you, but I will be a race car engineer.
And I love that you were so focused at that age.
And, you know, you you had this vision and you were going to be a race car engineer.
And there is a one became.
One driver I had when I was 20.
Because I I get I finished university having worked a bit during the university when I was 24 years old, I was a alpha from engineer because in the meantime, lunch, I withdraw, so all the focus was on Alfa and it was Antonio Tamburini was my my driver and I remember having a dinner with him, with the team, with another with Jovan, the other drivers and he was a very nice guy, but I was 24 years old with all these people, very shy.
And I remember this guy, I don't know if we can say in the podcast, in the worst
case sure you'd able to?
Basically, he was joking to me and say, but so basically, you start you you did always these studies work in your university.
是的。
Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
So you studied a lot.
是的。
Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
And you also worked.
是的。
Yeah.
So you were always busy.
是的。
Yeah.
You start having sex last week, basically.
Time for private life is what I think he was trying to say.
But, you know, I don't know what what you have to imagine.
I was 24 years old like this.
Everyone laughing and let me say to exaggerate, but I was always very dedicated to to the target.
I had I remember everyone remembers maybe university years as the best of their life, thing like this, for me it's the biggest nightmare.
I remember once being in Bale Lunga doing a test.
Bale Lunga is Rome, basically, and ever to finish the the the entire testing end of the year, something like this, because I finished university end of the year.
And I had to finish the test.
Did the report, the briefing, etcetera.
Then at 08:00, 09:00, I took my at UNO, and I drove a 600 kilometers back to Turin because in the morning, I had the the last exams before to have the possibility to to get the final master.
And so these things really, I don't remember with very romantic shades and the the stress I had.
I'm not surprised if you were so busy if you were juggling university life with then working as well.
是的。
Yeah.
But if you want something, you know, there there has always been a a problem.
And one colleague of mine, when I was born, was more target once told me a feast that was an eye open ear for me.
Uh-huh.
He say that, you know Andre, you have a, let's call it, problem.
That for you, motorsport has always been 100% of your life.
You dedicated your life to motorsport, you committed 100% and you have to accept that not everyone is like you.
Because I remember being very tough with other people if something was not done in time and things like this and I understand that this was a let me split it in one way, on one side was good because I was lucky with my commitment to get what I wanted.
On the other hand, for me, it's always been complicated to accept other people less commitment and accept other people fault because when someone told me I tried but I was not able it made me crazy because I always fought and said sometimes that did you sacrifice all what you get to make it and they told me about things.
Another thing speaking openly and now I'm able to speak about, you know, the first time I met Barbara that has been, let me say, the love of my life, I was very young and I remember the first time we met I said she's the one and for me, well, she was.
I am not more big on this kind of things but for three years I was saying everything and initially she was but very, let me say, was keeping me far to say the least and everyone was telling me, but you have to understand that she doesn't like you, so you can say, so you have to have chat, they say, yeah, but she is the one And and then she was for years.
And I told her, I always knew it was just a matter to let you understand as well.
所以
And So
you basically you just, for three years, time and time again, just hammered home the fact that you were the one and you were going to be together.
不。
No.
不。
No.
You basically just broke her in the end and she just relented.
I never understood before she she decided because I she
She'd had enough of you.
Okay.
I was not, let me say, a stalker or things like that.
我
I
should hope not as well.
不是。
No.
不是。
No.
不是。
No.
不是。
No.
But every time.
But she was the one that I remember we we were maybe because sometimes I went also to a farm in Discotek and I was trying maybe to cause we are in the same company of friend, seated aside and say hi, all good.
She look at me, stand up and we walk away.
So everyone would have surrender surrendered to a friend's idea.
I didn't.
I say okay, it's not the night tonight.
Because I
You just saw it as a further challenge.
I always think that if you are sure of something, if you are convinced that something should happen, it will happen and the best compliments, if I can say compliments or things like this, told to me from a colleague was when we won the title and we had another thing, because I was the one saying I have an idea, we have to do this and everyone was telling me it's impossible and then we did and they say you see, we were able to, you just didn't believe before, you should believe.
He told me in Italian that is not grammatically correct, so I tried to translate to understand, but it was a bit like I don't know how you do, but you make the things happening.
是的。
Yeah.
也许
And maybe
But that's good.
That is a compliment, isn't it?
When someone says that to You know, it's you can you are someone that will make make it happen.
And I I think that's huge compliment.
For people are speaking, let me say, in a complicated and the fashion way, say you are motivated.
I don't know if I'm motivated.
I'm someone who thinks that if you want something and you try to, you can do it.
It's a matter to put the people together and let the people work together and let the people speak together and speak to me because the first time, you remember many time when I was asking some crazy idea to my people, the first answer was always it's impossible, we can.
Now this is, you know, you say, okay, we have say it's impossible, okay, now let's go ahead and I remember the first thing was, okay, let's list the reasons why it's and then the people have the first problem to face the reality, why it's impossible, it's because you are scared, it's because we have to work much more than what you think or you were prepared to, so let's put down why.
And now point by point, we try to solve the reasons.
You want to work less, we need more people, let's try to find how to get it.
Ah, but we don't have budget.
好的。
Okay.
Let me know where the budget is missing and I will find a solution.
You know, I think it was something I remember having five, four, six, seven people seated around the table, but always when they say it's impossible, okay, let's see why it's impossible.
And then you discover that maybe it's possible, it's just a matter of commitment, it's a matter to work more, it's a matter to a check that you are not up to it, but maybe with the help of someone else you can do it.
And I remember many time being told also, you know, yes, we cannot do this and then we did and we did well and we won.
但是
But
是的
Yeah.
Which, you know, that's that's a big part of what I wanna talk to you about is, obviously, you know what the key to success is because when you joined Hyundai, they won the Manufacturers' Championship in that year.
好吧
And okay.
We're skipping ahead quite a few steps right now.
I wanna take you back a little bit just to talk about the the beginnings of the of the engineering work, and it was racing at first or was it
Actually, I started as a rally mechanic, but when because
you mentioned the Jolly Club earlier, which, you know, to to many fans
mechanic is a big word.
哦。
Oh.
I have to respect the mechanic.
Were you a vision technician?
Were you just washing the windscreen?
I was changing tires, lounge, a cold water on the turbo, and they had to change it.
All big responsibility things.
You know?
But I remember once in '19 in 2005, had a couple in Turkey rally, I have to be there with my mechanics because we had to run one Fiat Palio to test for the Turkish team and there was an ex mechanic Jolly Club with me, I became the chief in those days and we have to change the gearbox fast and this is a nice thing, because, you know, on this front wheel driven car, on the left side you have much more job to do and the right side you just have to remove the drive shaft, shaft slip out, slip in to fix it.
And basically I was alone because we were a very small team that I changed the drive shaft on the right side while all the other were on the other three, four were on the other side.
I remember they removed the jacks, the cargo on everyone and then they look each other and say, but who has done the right one?
Because they noticed that they were all together on one side and then I say, myself, they look at me but not as a joker.

Call the driver.
什么?
What?
I did it properly.
And I tell you, it was not a joke.
They were scared all the loop that the drive shaft was not properly fixed.
或者
Or the
You must have felt so smug at the end of the loop when it was fine.
I was waiting at the you know, you have
Were you were were you a little bit worried as well?
Always, sir.
But, you know, but you cannot your the good thing is I'm sometimes I'm I I face I I surface or things like this.
I pretend to be calmer inside.
I'm a bit worried, but I say nothing and I I I told them what I was thinking when the car was back after the loop, of course.
是的。
Yeah.
Before I was pretending to be calm, but then they because they start to ask you, but did you close this?
Did you did this?
And they say, I should have done.
是的。
Yes.
For so sure.
But did you close the clip?
是的。
Yeah.
For sure.
Are you sure?
Yes, I am
and then was it, but so to go back, no, didn't made any big big thing, but it was a huge huge huge school, because I was lucky enough all my life to work with people that consider win the only option and this gives you the winning mentality and at least also maybe sometimes the problem that I suffered when we were losing a bit also physically, I remember big stomach ache in the evening, the Sunday evening, if we were not winning, the big big stress in me, because I grew up in any I didn't add many teams, but in any team with the mentality, the winning mentality, you have to win and stop, there are no options, it's not let's go to rally and see what's going to happen, lunch I had to win, alpha had to win, every time we had to win.
I remember my boss once said here we have to win, I don't care what you have to do, we have to win.
Wow, that's serious pressure!
I was 25, 27, 26, 28, 29 years old and when I was 30 years old I found myself leading basically 80 people and you know, when you have 30 years old and you have to lead the experienced people like this, it's easy to be a bit in the middle of three by them, so I have to be twice as hard as I was really, because you have to be respected and people respect you, not because you shout, but you decide.
I I noticed that people respect you if you decide.
If you do not decide and you've wander around, people will not respect you overnight.
So I always took decisions in my life.
But it sounds like you were a decision maker early on in your life because at 12
Sometimes I was one of myself.
You made the decision I want to be a race car engineer.
You became that engineer, but then in your mind while you were doing that role, were you thinking, right.
Okay.
What's what's next?
Because I could do this for the rest of my life, I'm sure.
But you strike me as a man, and, obviously, we know that you you stepped up to the the highest echelon.
But when was the point in your career where 're engineering and you're thinking actually I want more?
我从未
I never
decided to have more.
I found my No.
不。
No.
I am people think that I was planning to be what I I was planning to be race car engineer and designer, not a race car engineer of race car engineer, because in 1998 and 1997 I've been offered the possibility to be a race car engineer of the works Alfaro male team and I denied, because I want to design cars, don't want to be race car engineer and so I also know what to what I
want to be
as a race engineer, not just a race car engineer, because in my opinion you have to be decided in your life, you have to know what you want clearly, when you say, I like to go there to do this, but how?
什么?
What?
In which way?
You know, this is what I I say.
If you want to win, if you want, you have to know exactly in the way you have to go there.
It's not let's go and see.
So it's why for me, I was I wanted to be race car engineer.
I want to design race cars and this why I did all what is needed.
I was a race car engineer on the track side because I knew it was needed to let me understand better what is needed to have a fast car, to work on the car easily, to understand the driver words and things like this, to understand what the others are doing.
And then incidentally, I found myself with a wide experience that was very useful when I was leading because at the end, when I need I knew the needs of the race car engineer, I knew the needs of mechanic, I knew the needs of many other things, and also I knew that when someone was asking me something, I was able to understand if it was a fair request and a smart request or if it was just a a bluff, no?
A way to stop the process, no?
So Yeah.
The problem is that sometimes I was cutting these things in a bit harsh way.
I could have now looking back, I could have been nice You?
在
At the
时候。
time.
Harsh?
不。
No.
I know.
Randomly.
Twice a year.
But, you know, just like this to give you another example and to to lead by example.
In 2016, we went to test the first Hyundai f five.
Mhmm.
That was not really a success, was done very rash, etcetera, etcetera.
But we did the first tarmac test, the chassis was made, let's say, let's go to the point, let's avoid the shades, if not with the ears.
Yes, it's cool, maybe I say.
The car is not, was not very well done and the first time that Kevin Evering was braking on tarmac, so when big pressure was needed before we just tested on gravel, testing was a big work, the full pedal box went away because the bushes were not properly welded, etcetera, etcetera.
And when the car was back at the service, the mechanic, the other side, we have to go back home because it's impossible to fix.
Then I say to them, I look at it, I say, okay, remove yourself.
I put on a t shirt, there are there are pictures around, by the way, I ask the guy to pull out the the welding machine, the tools and some sheet foil, etcetera.
I bend, I cut, etcetera, etcetera, in two hours and half, it was not a top fabricator job, but I fixed back the car, I bolt on the pedal box, I told the mechanics put the tires and I told them, for sure, you will cheat me in the future but you have to work harder so raise your level.
Oh, how did that go down with the mechanics?
First of all, the picture was around I think all around you in the motorsport etc etc but I think that was the way to be respected.
好的。
Okay.
Because you know sometimes you also have to adapt yourself to the ambient, to the way you are, you know, and I thought that the best way was not to force them to do it and say, now you try to repair because would have been just a clash, blah blah blah.
You know, if you don't want to do something and someone push you, you just break the system.
是的。
Yeah.
So I say, okay, move away.
I do.
And then after, that's the level that you have to adapt, not because I'm good, because we just never surrender.
是的。
Yeah.
This is the approach.
And then, of course, one guy told me, you take the responsibility if he has a problem, say, I was taking responsibility when I was 19 years old living alone in Turing, so don't think this is gonna scare me.
Tell me how you started working for Hyundai, how did that come across?
That come across in a nice way because basically it was after Honda I was I had already a health problem in 2013, I had to go through therapy, basically I was having a small lictus and I had the blood, I still have by the way a blood in my brain and I have to take medicines for it, then after 2014 I decided that I should have to stop this kind of life and Basta and then I worked a bit for a road car for three months then I decided it was a finish and when I decided Basta, now I do something very calm, I don't want motorsport no more, I was called by Michel Nandan and the guy, they had to have a chat in Hyundai because they were starting a customer racing thing and of course you never say no to any invitation and things like this, but I went up, I took the plane, I went up, it was quite a long meeting, I remember we had many meeting, many people, there were Mr.
Lim, key one Korean guys there, there were Michelle, the HR manager, things like this.
So we we we had a good talk about four hours.
Four hours and a half, show me everything.
We spoke a lot about what I did.
I tell them stories.
And, you know, it wasn't like a
I can I can understand why it was a four hour conversation now if you were telling stories?
But yeah.
But, you know, it was the easiest interview of my life because I went up with no wish to to start to work
那里。
there.
And no expectation.
But because I I say I don't want to work on the spot, but I it's nice to go and see like this.
So how would they how would they come across you had they been given feedback from someone it was yeah.
But did someone say to them you need Andrea or Don?
没有。
No.
没有。
No.
I don't think they
need It's a small it's a small world.
I know.
Between other candidates.
They fought also to to call me because they knew I stopped with Alpha and things like this.
I had lunch there easily with Michelle and Bertrand.
And really, it was the least of my wish to come
工作。
and work.
Worked with Michelle before.
当然。
Of course.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
We met since years, because I when I was also the president of the Manufacturer Commission for FIA three years in a row when I was in Abbott, I was the youngest I think.
I don't know how they can trust me, but sometimes I question myself now looking at my past, I say I don't know how people could have trust this, but okay, anyhow, going back to the point and of course after four hour end up, the HR manager, being an HR manager and behave like an HR manager, when we exchange cheers at the doors told me you know we have many candidates for this position, it will take some months to decide, then myself said yeah don't worry, don't worry, don't care, don't want to
do this no more.
That's probably the best frame of mind to be in, isn't it?
When you you you kind
of my life.
You you don't have expectation.
You don't need the job.
It would be great, but you're kind of free and easy about it.
Real unreal, because I never pretend to be someone.
I was reading myself 200%, you know, with my ups and downs, everything, and yeah, was Wednesday.
Monday morning, I got a phone call from Germany, from the very same man, and told me, you know, we had a photo, I said, okay, days, so they decided to stay away, no problem.
Is it a problem for you to start next Monday working here?
And I told him, aren't you the one who told me that it would have taken two months to decide?
But we thought we think you are the the one.
It was not the Monday after, but it was after two weeks that I started up there and I tell you also it was a game changer in my life because I worked already before abroad but not like I did in Junde.
In Junde basically I lived in Germany because the way was needed, my presence there was twenty four seven and when I went up there I remember all my life telling my sister leaving Italy this day I will be there three years Marxibou, it will be a nice experience three years but in three years I'm back eight years and the story was much different than any possible way I could have imagined because I started with the F5 then we started with the TCR for the racing project.
I remember when I have been told that we should have done also the TCR, we were in the such in the shit, sorry, in the airfighter, they say how can I do it and then as before is I'm the first one telling myself you have to do stop excuses how to plan and make it happen finish so don't excuse yourself for anything and I was doing exactly the same and the first person I called for TCR was Gabriela Takwini and he came up
Name dropper?
是的。
Yeah.
I think I spent more time with him than any girlfriend of parents, etcetera, etcetera.
But anyhow, because and yeah, we were so lucky to work with three manufacturers and won with and win with three manufacturers.
So I think it's the mix that is something of luckiness and yeah, he he arrived in Hyundai, it was a big empty workshop, two people telling him and I meet him with the way that sometimes I'm able to say, so no problem, we are gonna have to make the TCR, we do need to do the he was looking at me and at the end, when I finish everything, he told me with this Italian accent that is used to imitate how in English, but if it weren't you, I would have never believed.
And he signed the contract with this.
So he always thought now I tell him, you know, half of your payroll is mine.
I have to be your manager, but apart this, I always tell tell everyone speaking about this, I would never believe, but I say, okay, let's have a go to it, but he will never be able and instead I did.
So that's how it started and then I never asked to do something more and basically it's very easy, remember it, I have no chat, no things about being the new team principal or team or whatever it is the name And I remember on the 12/20/2018, trying to have more business inside, I was always trying to bring Hyundai Motorsport the job of building road car high performance prototype, because my main target, I've been told from my previous boss, Marius Mauer Sipps, was that you have to care about your people.
It's not people, it's families.
You have to always guarantee them a payroll to what you want.
So for me, it was always my target and work.
So I say, if I bring on more job than customer racing things, and we try to be also this kind of prototype company for high performance cars.
We also if something with their fire, where the thing happen, I have a job to do for my people, then they can like or not, but I can guarantee the payroll.
不。
No.
So it was the ideas that I had sometimes to keep the business alive and always have a safety exit.
And I remember on the December 20, 04:00, I had a meeting about this high performance with supplier and things like this, and I was supposed to have a flight on the evening to go back home for Christmas time.
对。
Right.
And I got an SMS from mister Shimera, that was the chief in those days with mister Beerman, say, we decided that he will be the next team principal.
好的。
Okay.
So they hadn't asked you or anything.
It was just
I was right.
We've made a decision.
不。
No.
But You are
It doesn't finish like this because basically and then I read it.
I said, I think I I did this for trust me.
I say 04:00 they are in Korea seven hours they are having a Christmas dinner they are totally drunk so they don't know exactly what they have written so if I say blah blah blah it's not serious so I I was answering something like, thank you very much for your trust, always have your disposal as Hyundai is very important for me.
I do all what is needed and what the company asked me.
Merry Christmas, etcetera.
Finish.
My mind, finish.
Cheers, happy Christmas, take the flight.
Twenty fifth Christmas, twenty sixth is not holiday in Korea, it is in Italy And I had the Christmas party with my friends and to pull out the plug.
It was a late night, early morning thing.
Eight to 09:00 in the morning, my phone starts vibrating, not ringing.
Ringing?
Not ringing because missus Marcela of the Hyundai one shout to me saying that I was not only the one and so I should stop.
Of course, I was working, were many, baby, baby.
是的。
Yes.
One day she tried to kill me for this.
Since then I'm not surprised.
I had the vibration.
Thank you, Sabine.
And basically was a Korean number telling me, ah, Damo.
And trust me, I thought it was a joke because, you know, I was basically not, you know, when you are and who asked the HR with the other day, we start to modify the code.
So I remember the first thing that I was telling them.
So it was not a joke.
It was real.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
好。
Yeah.
And when, you know, that dawns on your mind, you are now going to be leading the team
是的。
Yeah.
Into the a brand new year with not that long to prepare because Monty is just around the corner straight after Christmas.
It's like, boom.
Straight away there it is.
I mean, what did you think in that moment?
Did you think this is amazing, or did you think, I can't believe this is happening, or did you roll with the punches and just, okay.
This is happening.
I need to get on with it.
不。
No.
不。
No.
I was not worried.
Okay, not worried.
Let me say, if I was not worried I would have been stupid.
I was committed, so the first thing that I tried was to speak with the main people.
I started calling people to understand what they were thinking, not about me, about the face to surface, well I didn't care what they were thinking about me, because I was there, not decided by them, and so that was the thing, now we have to work together.
I tried to reorganize faster what I thought working in Hyundai, it was not maybe the best way, and since there we move on.
I remember I had the first chat because we were in NEC and I call in a room crew by crew, because for me it's always a crew, it's not the driver, I spoke with them, let them speaking, I didn't spoke, I remember I was speaking with all of them, listen about what they thought was not okay and what they wish to have said.
是的。
So Mhmm.
For a good fifteen days, and I think the only fifteen days in my life, I was only listening and not speaking.
什么?
What
would you say now, you know, when you look back and you you kind of like you just mentioned, you knew what you thought was wrong there and why maybe Hyundai weren't winning the Manufacturers' Championship, weren't winning the Drivers' Championship.
I know the Manufacturers is the most important.
What was the reason?
Because it had been up to that point, what, five years in the championship for Hyundai, and they hadn't secured either championship at that point?
I don't know which was the reason.
I know the way I fought was needed and was done as I always done before, I didn't change anything.
I just put together put on ongoing what is the same thing as I did before and if you remember the first thing I did as I think was needed, I said now I'm the only one speaking here.
Oh, so that was you?
是的。
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
To to those who are listening right now, what Andrea is basically saying is whenever we would go and interview, whenever any journalist would go to the team to interview anybody, you were the only spokesperson we we had.
We couldn't speak to a technical director or an engineer of any driver, no one other than Andrea and of course the drivers and and co drivers.
Able to speak.
是的。
Yeah.
But it was you with a voice
Now box for the everyone has to be focusing his own job, 100%.
I want to see people committed, not they're trying to be nice and kind in front of everyone and they try to be famous.
Now you work.
And if there is a problem, it's my problem.
If we win, we win.
And if you remember, there were moments with big problems, and I didn't want anyone to say, no, it's not me, it's the other, it's me.
Okay?
是的。
Yeah.
Let's let's put on this.
The problems, it's me.
But everyone has to work on it.
And I don't want to see people start to saying, I know, but I did properly.
It was the one I say.
If there is a problem, it's our problem.
是的。
Yeah.
And I want this to be clear from the word go, and everyone has to be focused on it, everyone has had a target, a job, a target to fulfill, but I don't want to hear is this problem, is the engine, is the chassis, the suspension, is the test, is the race, the race are not doing.
Finito we say in Italy.
Now you work, I put the face.
是的。
Yeah.
Because something that I always did in the past and I think it was a bit needed because there were lots of under the table blaming and private chats and things like this, so I have also to do some cuts because I have to show some clear direction, but I think it was working and the thing that makes me laugh so much and I still laugh now a lot with Alain is the fact that I remember people were saying that me and Alain would last a maximum fifteen days.
I think it's the best working relationship that I ever had in my life.
Alain
Penas.
Yeah, Alan Penas.
I think that we click each other like hardly I had with someone else in the past.
We are both straightforward and I remember that I trust him 100% but on the other hand, if you work with people you have to trust them.
If you don't trust them it's useless, you'll just waste your time.
So why did the relationship fall apart if it was a good working relationship?
No no it's
not the at the end it was the start of some problems in Hyundai in my opinion and the Koreans decided that they had to close some contracts for any reasons and it was a big fight from my side with the Koreans.
It was, I think, another drop of the tension and the things that I had in those years.
If I look back, I think 2020, 2021 were '21 more the most stressful and I think I paid a bit in the years that I had because the tension was there, we were late with the new car that I knew we were because we never had the green line in time, there were problems to manage everything, there were tension in Korea, big power battles in Korea and it was very difficult and it was so
complicated in
those days and I feel also guilty to found myself in the situation to not be there to protect my people the year after and after they sort the things luckily but was complicated for me this year and I think I paid the bill in the end, I should have you enter in a loop at the certain moment, I am looking back and either someone blocked the loop or something or I said I know that the more I went ahead the more I was nervous because I saw the things not going in the direction I wanted but I was harmless to change many situation and that was not easy, not not easy at all.
Let's talk about the good stuff though because you came in in 2019.
Life is made the good and bad.
Oh, yeah.
It really is.
Oh, we will talk about the bad as well.
Don't worry.
But we've gone forward a bit.
In 2019, you come in, You transform things there.
Hyundai wins Manufacturers' Championship for the first time, which was a pivotal moment for the team and for the manufacturer to be able to to claim that.
That must have made you feel good, but it was a year of hard work to get to that point.
I would say, you know, look looking back on it, I think I remember, you know, watching the celebrations, and it was always interesting for us because there was this different dynamic with the Hyundai team because you rotated your third car.
And that got on my nerves a little bit.
I'll not lie.
As a journalist, you know, I wanted to see dedicated people in the team, but it worked for you.
It was the right game to play.
But to see a myriad of drivers, their success, and see the joy in everyone because it had been years of hard work leading to the point and it felt like a huge relief and also a release for everybody that this hard work had finally paid off.
I think for Hyundai it was also a banter of air from the bosses, know.
If they say to put me there was somehow an easy choice because if Hyundai would not have won anyhow, know, he was not good enough and if Hyundai would have won, it would have been Hyundai, in my opinion.
But it was not a challenge, the decision that has been done.
I always respected boss, I will say Upeis is the boss and I respect a lot.
It was just a matter of applying the strategies and the things I've seen and I've done before, so nothing strange, know.
I think it was a no brain decision to take someone who starts on gravel behind to be more competitive.
It's not Yeah.
The decision to put someone behind and clean someone else.
You weren't afraid to play games as well?
不。
No.
是的。
Yes.
Probably not games, sir.
They are Tactics.
策略。
Tactics.
Tactical.
The routine was very tactical.
Everyone.
是的。
Yeah.
So if you not read the book, it's your problem, not mine.
Well, yeah.
And I mean, I I I remember from speaking
I to was the first one making national rallies, etcetera, etcetera, and I was the bad guy.
Now if someone does, he's smart.
So I don't know why I was bad, and now someone else is smart.
Something that I never understood, but okay.
When you are I always say, I'm a a nice person with the bad marketing.
Maybe.
Maybe.
We'll talk about that in a minute.
But I always used to love, you know, I would always be the one from WRC TV reporter's bench who would be wheeled out to interview you because Wheeled.
We literally wheeled out.
It'd be like, oh my god.
We've got to interview Andrea Adam.
I think everyone was a bit scared of you because you were quite a challenge to interview.
And I can compare you to Oit Tanakh in many, many ways.
You're very similar to him in personality with, you know, 100% commitment, focus, driven, expected of everyone around you.
But you can also be a man of few words as well.
And especially when you had played tactics, you were almost playing cat and mouse with us as reporters.
So I'd ask you a question, and you'd give me a handful of words as a response, and I had to keep going.
It keep going.
It it which is exactly what I've gotta keep doing with OIT until I've broken you down, and eventually, you give me all the goods.
But I think people were, you know, that year you came in, we didn't know what to expect.
We, you know, we weren't aware of who you were as a personality and what we were gonna get when we were interviewing you.
And you could be tough, but you could also be fun to interview as well.
But generally I think people were scared
of you.
I don't know why but you know this is a part of my commitment and my expect of high level by everyone you know I remember someone but she's still alive, coming in Portugal when we had the fuel pump problem that made me crazy because I knew we should have solved it, I knew we had been told, quite for the start of the season when I was still trying to understand my people, and with Danny and Leub in Portugal, we had a fuel pump problems after three kilometers in the stage, and the interviewer come to me and asked me, did you made the wrong fuel calculation?
In a loop of 80 kilometers, whatever, etcetera, etcetera.
Then of course, she's still alive for who is listening just no person has been killed for this problem and I don't remember exactly the word but I remember maybe I was not the kindest person that she could have met that day you know also the question ask me anything but you really think that my people have made a wrong calculation for a loop of three stages and after 15 kilometers of road section and three kilometers of stage we finish the fuel.
I think you can easily make a smarter question.
是的。
Yeah.
So I think this was a bit of a bad marketing aside.
No?
So it's not that the question was stupid.
This Andrea is a bad guy.
But, yeah, I guess, you know, you see both sides of the story.
You you could have been more diplomatic with her maybe, but you're also Not your strong point?
Sometimes, you know, I even more now, I think that life is too short to waste time.
是的。
Yeah.
Well, then no.
I I will agree with you there.
But I am, I think, the eternal diplomat in the way that I deal with things and people because I know that I can cut through a lot of the rubbish in life by being diplomatic and get what I want by being diplomatic.
Sometimes I'm and I'm very direct in it, but at the same time, I'm
quite balanced.
A lot, I'm tell you I'm improved a lot.
I'm improved
很多。
a lot.
Well, it's funny because I
As Jean told told me, it was, more difficult to became worse than then improve.
So I've always believed, you know, nothing really scares me, certainly not interviewing people.
So I you know, even if we have tough people to interview like you used to be back in the day, like Oit still is to this day.
For me, he's not tough.
I I don't find anyone a challenge.
I'm certainly not scared of anybody, but you go in and and you do the job.
You mentioned a couple of drivers there.
You mentioned Loeb.
You mentioned Sordo.
Obviously, quite a few drivers went through your stable
是的。
Mhmm.
In your three years there.
What was it like, first of all, stepping up into that role and then working head to head with Thierry Newville, who'd been there from the start, who was literally like the the leading figure of the team?
What was it like with Loeb, Sordo?
How did you discover their personalities?
It was always easy because at the end they were the most paid employee of the company so they think they should respect twice the company and anyone else and I think that when you speak, when you work with the smart people it's always easy, know?
是的。
Yeah.
As much as you are, between the people who are working together, you never have to lie.
And you always have to tell the truth.
The truth makes you free, as I've been saying many years ago.
And when you tell people the truth and you tell them what they have to do and what they can expect from you as a company or from you and what they cannot expect and why you decide to do something, I think people maybe are not happy but they understand.
对。
Yeah.
Another thing that I always tried to do after any WRC event and also TCR in those days was to do a whole company meeting with some nice video prepared by the media people and explain to each and everyone and when I say each and everyone was each and everyone what was happened at the rally or the racing, where we are, where we have to go, why I'm asking something, why they should expect to work a bit more for this and that and that a vision and the target.
是的。
Yeah.
Because I think is the most important thing to let everyone working with you where you are going.
When there were PC PC news like this, I often put together all the people, for example, the workshop, tell them, it's like this, this, this, this.
And then in the end, I always ask questions.
Maybe the tone was a bit scary, but at least it
was You don't say.
And then everyone joke with me because every time when I was there, I was always finish saying clear.
And so also now a joke with me
saying clear.
是的。
Yes.
I'm trying a yes.
Let us let us
leave the room.
But it was just I wanted to know that everyone was up to what was needed.
好的。
Okay.
And the problem is that I have a big memory.
So sometimes I was remembering thing that happened before that people forgot, and then it made me twice But as okay.
And so I think it was important for let everyone think.
And another thing just to joke altogether and with my still my people, sorry for me they will never be ex colleague, for me they will remain all my life my people.
When I arrived in Hyundai, customer was not welcome and I was seated in this big space, open space, seated in the corner with a big office and I remember I was the first one coming and basically the last one going home and this always been like this.
And I remember people entering and saying, good morning, no one cares.
Good morning, and it was going on three days.
At the fourth day, I say, okay, now it's my time.
I let everyone in, I stand up and I went desk by desk, giving the hand and say, morning, good morning.
And people were shocked.
When you are face to face, now I want to see.
He was not going to tell me good morning.
And I have to be appreciated for the open way I was and etc.
等等。
Etc.
We start to get used to this crazy Italian that came to work in Germany as a gasterbiter, you know gasterbiter, where the worker that after the second world war from Turkey, Italy used to go to work there so I always say I'm a poor gas turbine in the end so I check before what I am and until the last day every day I was in Hyundai I spent at least one hour to go to Sheikh Ham to each and everyone in the company asking how it was, listen to everyone a bit, hello, knowing the family, the things if someone has a son going to school or born and it was my way to let everyone that I was there and that they had a responsible, I don't like to say both, and they should know that I was there.
And this for me was the most important thing that I always did every day I was there.
And the first time and the first day after a win, I used to go to say thank you for all the people not directly involved with the cast because I didn't want it, this was happening in lunch, the class A, class B, class C people.
So the first thing that I went to say thank you was to the finance people, to the HR, to the purchase department, everything, because I say every time and it was not just a nice way of saying that the mechanic is nice, but if he doesn't have the purchaser, the finance, and all the people working in the company, we will never be able to go there.
And for me, it was a matter to have everyone on the same level, because doesn't mean that if someone is working under the car, that is a hard work.
It is more important that someone is making the budget stays together, because I am sure that to manage the budget in the night and make the figures coming back is not so easy.
是的。
Yeah.
And everyone is needed and this was my way to to manage and to say my people that is this way will stay forever.
Let's talk about people.
Let's talk about 2019 heading towards the end of the 2019 season.
I know where you are going.
I know you know where I'm going.
Andrea
the sun.
Andrea O'Damo's eyes are looking elsewhere other than the current crop of drivers who are part of Hyundai at the time.
You were looking for someone who was about to win the championship in 2019, Oit Tanak.
And I remember there being so many rumors about Hyundai chasing Oit and Oit interested in Hyundai and going there, and which lot of people were like, well, he's just about to win the championship with Toyota.
Why why on earth would he go to Hyundai?
He's got the winning package here.
And I remember at Rally Spain, the event he won the championship at, speaking to you in the media zone live on TV, asking you flat out whether you had any discussions with Oytanak and had he signed a contract with Hyundai for 2020.
And you told me, no.
We have not spoken with And then the camera stopped rolling, and you leaned in and whispered in my ear, you will forgive me.
At which point, I knew you'd signed Oit Tanach, and I could say nothing.
Probably still to this day, one of the most frustrating moments of my journalistic career.
But you had spoken to him, and he had already signed on the dotted line.
I think the announcement happened the day after he won the championship or something like I can't remember how quick it was, but it was quick.
How when did that start?
When did that process of you speaking to Oit Tanak start?
When did you become a liar, Andrea Odomo?
So I was not a liar because technically I was not.
But, you know, the way you started was not time because it's not that I was not looking at my current cruise, but I was learning since I was a child with lunch hour, for a meal, etcetera, that the first thing that you need to have to win is to have all the possible best people.
I will be banned and my passport will be cancelled in Italy saying that, but if Lancia won so much, it was thanks to the fact that all the best drivers were in Lancia.
是的。
Yeah.
Let's say the things.
And you have to be fair to analyze the things, analyze the history, and first of all, what I always did was to understand where the other did mistakes, because you cannot do enough mistakes in life alone to become good.
You have to see what are there is.
So I always tried to study what was the key factors of my previous experience that allowed us to win.
And it was clear for me that I have the best drivers.
And there, know, best the driver in my opinion was OIT someone can say there's OGET etc, but in those days Stellantis or whatever was the name was still involved and I knew the contract was going on for OGET would have cost me a lot.
But instead OIT was coming to the end of his contract.
And to tell you the truth, think the first time we spoke a bit together was in 2019 of course but after Sardinia.
好的。
Okay.
Because if you remember was when he broke the steering
on the power stage and he lost the wind.
Yeah and I remember clearly walking after the parfum very down and I see the moment that I should start to to jump in.
You were like a shark smelling blood.
That's what you were.
I was someone committed to win.
哦。
Oh.
好的。
Okay.
So how did you know, I'm sure everyone out there wants to know how did the conversation go?
I mean, what did you say to him?
I'm I'm really sorry, Oit, but would you like to come and drive for me next year?
Man, not straight like this, but
Well, you are a direct man after all.
But you know I remember that we start to speak and then I spoke with Marco Martin that was his manager in those days and the conversation came up and we met a bit.
We had a nice evening in Germany after the rally with him and Danny, him is Oit and Danny speaking a lot and drinking so many Aperol Spritz and then the things went on, but you have to find the moment in Italy or maybe also in UK, say, to put the feet in the door.
The feet in the door.
是的。
Yeah.
So I saw the moment, this one, where everyone was partying because it was then I saw it.
I move aside, and I say I let them party.
They deserve my people to party.
But I was when?
2019.
不。
No.
But when?
Where?
六月。
June.
This was in June.
So this is still Sardinia time?
是的。
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
So this is still okay.
对。
Right.
Well Stop and walk with the head down after the parfum Oh,
so after the Aperol Spritz, blah blah blah.
不。
No.
不。
No.
The Aperol Spritz came in in Germany.
Ah, okay.
So Germany was August.
Oh, right.
好的。
Okay.
