Welcome to YOUR DIET SUCKS, the podcast that detoxes your brain, not your colon.
I'm Zoey Rome.
And I'm Kylee Van Horn.
And today, we're talking about detoxing.
I am so excited.
Have you ever cleansed or detoxed?
Is this something you've ever done?
No, but I've taken those those drinks, know, like the, I feel like it's like a kombucha, or like a juice that will say, like, that it cleanses you from the inside Yes.
It has like cayenne pepper and lemon in it.
对。
Yep.
Maybe like, I've never tried the ones with activated charcoal.
Oh, you will.
I think I have consumed activated charcoal at one time.
I think I've had charcoal lemonade.
Yeah, guilty.
You're like, I just want this lemonade.
I don't know if I want
the charcoal.
I was like, oh, it's black.
That's cool.
I've definitely had a few green juices in my day and like have definitely sort of felt the like, oh my God, I'm drinking something that tastes awful and looks like it came out of the Jolly Green Giant.
It must be healthy.
See, I
hate the those green juice
things.
Really?
I'm like, I cannot stomach this.
是的。
Yeah.
I love, I mean, I love slightly like vegetal flavored More
power to you, Zoey.
Thank you.
I love things that taste like shitty lemonade.
But we are talking about detoxes today and I am really amped because this is a big one.
I feel like this is like on the Mount Rushmore of dumb diet ideas.
Oh yeah, and I feel like I'm surprised that it's taken us this long to do an
episode I know.
On a year in.
Can you believe it?
不信。
No.
So I feel like this is a big one.
I do feel like sometimes though fleets maybe have a slight or like active folks might have a slightly different relationship to this and we'll talk about why but I'm curious if this is something that like you've seen with athletes.
Oh, I mean, I think with the idea of clean eating and just doing a reset.
对。
Yes.
Like this idea, I'm gonna just do a juice cleanse reset and then I'm going to get back into healthier eating.
Works every time.
没错。
Yeah.
And the idea, the human body is basically like an iPhone 14 where you can just like, back to factory settings.
你得
You need
is a little bit of celery juice.
Well, and
the sad part is I, we do see this often around the new year.
是的。
Yes.
You know?
Because people are like susceptible to wanting to make changes and they're like, well, need to do this detox reset first and then I'm gonna get into the whole like dietary changes.
是的。
Yes.
One of the reasons this is such a sticky idea is diet culture works on these extremes, right?
The diets and the solutions that diet and wellness culture puts forward are so extreme that you like can't possibly stick to them.
Ninety nine percent of people, you are going to fail and that is a feature, not a bug.
It is by design that you can't do it.
And so it just promotes this sort of revolving door of you fail the detox, you cut out all of these foods, you're not eating enough so you develop cravings so then you might binge or develop challenging tendencies or an unhealthy relationship to, I mean food in general or specific foods and then that leads you to feeling guilty and like you need to go back and do the cleanse and then rinse and repeat.
I also feel like it's pretty timely because especially with the rise of RFK, there's sort of this elevated or new cultural awareness or idea that we're being low key poisoned all the time and that the fact of human existence is that we're basically marinating in a cesspool of toxins.
And we need to cleanse ourselves on the individual level in order to move about the world as healthy functioning humans.
Which maybe not the true Exactly.
No one tells you this because it would literally break the wellness internet.
But your body does not automatically flush out most toxins.
Some of them just hang out inside you like they paid rent.
And suddenly you're tired, foggy, moody, bloated, inflamed, wondering why you feel like a cranky overcooked noodle.
And nope.
I can't explain it in sixty seconds without the internet canceling me.
So I made a free detox guide called Are You Toxic?
It explains the top seven symptoms to help identify if you have toxins in your body.
Comment detox and I'll send it to you instantly and if you follow today you'll get my detox welcome pack.
Basically all the cheat codes your doctor didn't tell you.
Save this and don't forget because the algorithm will hide me like your toxic ex.
I think something that's really interesting here is that the wellness industry zooming out is actually even bigger in than one number I pharmaceuticals.
Oh, okay.
So suck it big juice cleanse.
It was attributed to be $6,300,000,000,000 in 2023.
And I found one project in that it could reach up to 9,000,000,000,000 by 2028.
So it's clearly on an upswing and that number is bigger than the entire GDP of Japan.
And that would be four times bigger than all of the pharmaceutical industry.
So I wanted to talk today about why athletes and active people especially get targeted, what it might mean for folks in eating disorder recovery or diet culture recovery and what the actual science says about if your liver needs that reboot.
So I'm kind of curious when we say detox, what are we actually talking about?
So I want to separate us from like the idea of a medical detox from like alcohol and drugs.
That's a real life saving medicine with medical supervision, what we're talking about today is detox in like the wellness term.
So we're talking juice cleanses, colon hydrotherapy, detox teas, charcoal everything, foot pads that turn brown, celery juice, lemon water fasts, Master Cleanse, liver flushes, activated charcoal lattes.
And the core claim here is that these mysterious toxins accumulate and the body alone can't handle them and you need this external intervention in order to survive.
So thought experiment, ask any detox company to name one specific toxin their product removes.
It's like saying that your car has quote problems, but not specifying if it's like brakes, engine, or just needs gas.
Okay.
If anyone does this, please let us know what response you get.
I love asking people to define toxin.
No, but I want somebody to email a company and ask them.
对。
Yeah.
And then if they get a response and then they send it to us and we'll put you on our Patreon.
没错。
Yes.
Yeah, you will get, we will send you a, if you screenshot you into a detox or cleanse company's DMs, we will send you a carb slut shirt.
That's a promise.
所以,
So,
okay, so that's when we talk about detox.
What about, like, what even is a toxin?
Yeah, that's a really good question.
And that's really where for me the problem starts.
So in actual toxicology, a toxin is a poisonous substance produced by living organism like a snake, like snake venom, botulinum, ricin.
A toxic substance could be any chemical that can harm you at certain doses.
So that could include both natural and synthetic substances.
And a key principle of toxicology that people probably hear about a lot is that the dose, makes the poison from Paracelsus, like, you know, the idea that water can kill you if you drink too much.
You know, hyponatremia, marathon runners will will die from this.
Even oxygen is technically toxic at high enough concentrations, although oxygen toxicity is also a real medical condition.
But the wellness industry uses toxins to mean vague, scary, undefined, bad stuff that's somehow everywhere and also nowhere.
Like nerd clusters, I bet that could be a Oh, that's definitely a toxin.
I love some nerd clusters.
When these companies are saying that they're removing toxins, what are we talking about here?
What are they claiming?
Hey, it's Doctor Living Good live from the bathroom.
Don't worry, not too live.
But here are five warning signs that you need a detox.
Warning sign number one that you are toxic is you can't lose weight.
You hold on to all of those toxins.
It causes a rebound effect when your body's trying to figure out where to store the toxins.
It stuffs it away as fat.
So if it's time to lose weight
I didn't
know that's how
it works.
Detox.
Number two is literally there's bloating and pain.
The digestive system can have pain, but sometimes it's just pain in the joints of your body.
Your body's accumulating these toxins.
It's time to flush them out.
What that leads to is number three, but you have skin issues.
It might be eczema, might be psoriatic or psoriasis type things, or you're just breaking out.
Your body's toxic.
The digestive system can't eliminate it, so it's coming up through your skin.
That's kinda gross.
Number four is your energy levels.
If you're fatigued, if you're tired, it is time to detox.
Flushing out the excess toxins in your body allows the energy to be freed up to actually heal you and energize you instead of dealing with all of those.
And finally, number five, if you are getting sick a lot.
If you're run down, wore out, cold and flu season, you got a detox in anticipation of those seasons.
If you're in the middle of one, it's time to flush things out, especially if you've taken a lot of medications for those situations.
You're depleting your immune system.
A simple even three day proper juice cleanse or detoxification can crank up your immune system, shows research at UCLA really quick.
Time to do a detox and flush out the system.
This is from a doctor.
Right?
This is a doctor living good.
So I definitely have questions about where same man.
Where doctor living good got his his degree.
But I think that this really speaks to the fact that when companies are pointing at toxins in the way that we use it as a culture is never anything specific and that is a deliberate strategy.
So oftentimes they will gesture at environmental toxins, chemicals, heavy metals, pollutants, free radicals but they never name specific compounds, not lead, not mercury, not benzene, not formaldehyde and that's because if they named any specific toxin, you could test whether their product actually removes it.
So that vagueness is a feature and not a bug because you can't disprove an unfalsifiable claim.
So it's like saying that a product removes bad vibes.
How are you gonna measure that?
I don't know.
Yeah.
And I think that video of doctor living good pointing out all of these symptoms, I can imagine that if you are struggling with one of those in particular, feeling very vulnerable and desperate for answers, but also those are just kind of like low key symptoms of being alive.
And I think that is really emblematic of these signs that you need a detox that like, I even saw one person saying that cancer is a sign that you need to detox.
什么?
What?
And implying that if you are, if you cleanse then you will not get cancer.
People pointing to just like, again, these like really mundane sort of side effects of being alive.
One of them was male pattern baldness.
One of them was infertility.
So companies will prey on things that people feel really vulnerable about in order to sell them these overpriced bottles of lemonade.
Here are seven signs your body is full of toxins and begging for a reset.
Number one, you're always tired no matter how much you sleep.
Number two, you feel puffier and inflamed, especially in the face or belly.
Your body's holding on to water because it's holding on to waste.
Number three, you can't lose weight even when you're doing everything right.
Your fat cells are protecting you.
They're storing toxins your body can't process yet.
Number four, your skin is breaking out, itching, or looking dull.
When your liver or gut is backed up, your skin becomes the exit door.
Number five, you have brain fog, mood swings, or forgetfulness.
Number six, you crave sugar, caffeine, or processed foods.
It's a chemical dependency created by imbalance.
Your body's not broken.
It's asking for help.

是的。
Yeah.
Or there could be problems like undereating.
对。
Yes.
没错。
Yeah.
Causing people to do more.
Like eat less by doing a cleanse and becoming more restricted.
没错。
Right.
Like does your your stomach hurts if you have low energy or brain fog?
Homie, you might have an eating disorder.
Like you may not need to cleanse.
是的。
Yeah.
There's no real mechanism that could touch all of those different body systems that like all of these companies are gesturing at.
It's fatigue.
It's if you have a coal, your entire immune system, but it's also your colon and it's your hair and it's your reproductive organs and it's your vibes And it's just so big that, I mean, watching these videos, anyone could be led to believe that they are just chock full of toxins and they need to drink $30 worth of celery cum to get better.
I really wanna Okay.
So I wanna get some examples of the wild stuff that's out there because I remember some of this from natural grocers working there.
Oh my god.
What did you see it?
Like what was the Natty G detox of choice?
Oh, the the bamboo foot pads for Oh.
So this is one that I've always been like, how do they do that?
Like the commercials where they'll usually be an attractive woman.
She tapes these pads to her feet.
She goes to sleep.
She wakes up.
She peels them off and they're just like full of black scum.
I have always been like, but what is that?
If it's not like what kind of almost seems like proof, right?
But what it actually is is that material is a chemical that reacts with sweat.
It's not toxins leashing out and coming out through your feet.
This is what came out of my body last night while I was sleeping.
So the color of the pad when you peel it off means different things.
If yours was more of like a light brown color, then it was pulling out a lot of heavy metals.
If you see a darker brown color, it's pulling out a lot of metabolic waste.
If it's green, it's pulling out a lot of like air and water pollutants from your body.
Then if you see black, that's like industrial and chemical pollutants.
And mine was definitely a mixture of like dark brown and black, which was a little concerning.
I noticed the biggest difference when I woke up.
I usually have like a really bad headache when I wake up or just feel super groggy and tired.
But I seriously did not feel that way this morning.
I don't know you guys, we might be onto something here.
So I'm going
to link them down below in this video for you guys.
That is not how your body gets rid of toxins.
It's literally just a pad that turns black and and you can literally run them under sink water and the exact same thing will happen.
And if Paltrow and her goop empire in addition to selling $66 vagina eggs, dollars 200 coffee enemas Which
you could make that at home for yourself too if you wanted, but I'm not
advocating Any for egg that you put in your vagina is a vagina No, not
saying the coffee enema.
But people do that shit.
You know, my Literally.
I don't, I think you should always be careful about what goes in all of your holes.
Orifices.
All your orifices.
I guard my orifices.
I'm very choosy about my orifices.
The beauty industry is full of scams.
From advertising that preys on your insecurities to nonsense ingredients that are basically like expensive wallpaper for your face.
You know the type, proprietary peptide complex that's actually just glycerin with a big marketing budget.
Osmia
Osmia doesn't do any of that.
YDS is actually so proud to partner with Osmia because of their commitment to science and they're woman founded.
And that means using evidence backed ingredients that actually work.
No fake compounds or fictional serums.
Instead of trying to convince you that you need an 18 step anti aging routine to fix a face that was never broken, they just make simple products that feel great on your skin and are easy to use.
Right now, my favorites are the coffee mint body soap.
It's the perfect scrubby bar with actual coffee grounds in it so I smell like a minty latte all day long in a good way.

The Kardashians have endorsed flat tummy tea, is literally just expensive laxatives that cost thousands of dollars just to like poop constantly.
That's another big one that we see.
This is so TMI, but I have to share this.
This tea will cleanse you.
I was just in the bathroom for two hours, and I swear my insides are gone.
How I found this tea was this nurse that was working at a hyperbaric chamber center that I went to, she also worked at a celebrity detox center in LA, and she said they give this tea to them.
Oh my lord.
Am I cleansed?
Okay.
That is so TMI but hopefully this will stop the 80 year old men from messaging me asking to be their sugar baby.
There's activated charcoal everything.
Lattes I found, activated charcoal ice cream, face masks, toothpaste, which actually there is some evidence that it can prevent medication including birth control from being properly absorbed if you consume it in large enough quantities.
You know, back in the day there were these sort of like Victorian waste trainers that were marketed as toxic squeezers.
They just make you sweat and compress your organs so that you can't breathe.
And then there's the Master Cleanse.
Oh, I've heard of this one.
Yeah.
This is a big one.
This is the one that Beyonce did, you know, before Dream Girls supposedly to lose a bunch of weight and that's just drinking lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper for ten days.
Oh, that sounds like Oh my God, sounds so I actually made someone was like, oh my God, I'm gonna make Kylee drink this on the podcast.
But then I was like, because also the only cayenne I had was smoked cayenne, which I don't know if that's the right one.
Yeah, no.
But I found one study that showed that there is theoretically evidence that capsaicin, the thing that makes cayenne pepper spicy, can boost your metabolism in order to have any measurable effect.
You have to have a big amount, right?
You would have to eat it three times a day, every day for eight years.
Wow.
That's a lot of cayenne.
Yeah, that's a lot.
Why do athletes and people in the fitness world get targeted, do you think?
I think that athletes are already hyper focused on their body's performance metrics and optimization which makes us the perfect psychological target.
There also is like we talked about in our racing weight episode, this culture of cutting weight.
Sports like wrestling, bodybuilding can make that detox or cleanse language feel normal thinking about the spitting or doing the big sweats.
There's also the post competition reset mentality where you're told your body is toxic.
After hard training.
And I think that MLM culture and how that has infiltrated gyms and fitness culture also really pushes this stuff.
So think about coaches and athletes and like people at your gym selling Advocate, Herbalife, It Works wraps to their clients.
This was, I used to, when I first became a dietitian, I partnered with a couple of gyms in the Roaring Fork Valley, I remember that it was like myself, and then there was a random person that was a nutritionist that had their own signature juice cleanse they were trying to get gym goers to do, and people would come to me, I think confusing me with this other person and asking about the juice cleanse.
Like the Kylee signature juice I do that sort
of thing, but here in the Roaring Fork Valley, it's Yes, rampant.
There is rampant, we are a very cleansed people.
No one gives a shit about like actually eating well.
Just want
to eat juice cleanse.
Just do a juice cleanse.
And I also think that the recovery community speaking of eating disorders and as someone in the recovery community, those folks are especially vulnerable.
Folks who are looking for ways to undo restriction or that can sort of get caught up in these binge restrict cycles.
Do we think this is new or have people always been obsessed with purification?
Dude, this is ancient as hell.
Literally in 2,000 BCE, there's documentation on Egyptian medical papyruses where Egyptians enemas maintain food rotting in there.
Which like, it's kind of funny to be like, dumb Egyptians.
And I'm like, there's literally someone in Carbondale right now who believes this.
No, I mean, if somebody has like a fecal impaction or something where their stool is not moving through

Ayurvedic tradition, there was the Pancha Karma, which is this five step detox where you would drink ghee, engage in therapeutic vomiting, enemas and bloodletting with leeches, which is like a
为什么
real Why does
it always come back to bloodletting?
Dude, humans love to let their squishy stuff out.
There's one thing I've learned from this podcast, it's like historically, we were extremely comfortable with our fluids.
Even native Americans would use sweat lodges for spiritual and physical cleansing before fasting and vision quests.
But the key difference here is that a lot of these ancient practices were genuinely integrated into spiritual and physical rituals.
They were community based and not sold for profit which makes them I think materially different than what we're seeing today.
The modern version of this really strips context and repackages these spiritual traditions as a lifestyle product and then sells them back to you for $89.99 plus shipping.
That's cheap.
没错。
Right.
You're like, that's a deal.
So when did it become a more of a medical thing versus like the spiritual idea?
是的。
Yeah.
So, you know, back in ancient Greece, we're thinking around 400 BCE with the four humors theory, right?
We had blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile.
We love our fluids.
Health was believed to be defined by a balance of all of these humors.
Any illness was an imbalance.
The solution, pick one of those fluids and get it out of you.
So that's why so many of these treatments involved bloodletting, induced vomiting, laxatives, sometimes all three in one appointment which That sounds rough.
Yeah.
I don't like any of these things.
对,我
No, I
know.
I know.
I like the fluids in me.
What would you choose
out of this?
Fuck Mary.
Bloodletting, laxatives, vomiting.
And this theory persisted for two thousand plus years.
That's literally longer than Christianity has existed.
Mozart actually most likely died from being bled to death by his doctors trying to treat his illness in 1791.
Okay.
Quick fact check from future Zoey here.
Mozart's cause of death is actually still debated.
It could have been rheumatic fever, kidney disease, that strep throat infection.
But what we do know is that his doctors bled him repeatedly in his final days and that definitely did not help.
Anyway, back to the past.
Wow.
I didn't know that.
是的。
Yep.
Okay.
So people died from these detoxes is what you're telling me?
Oh yeah.
George Washington also died from like the early version of a detox.
In December 1799, George Washington woke up with a sore throat which was probably a strep throat or epiglottis.
Three physicians immediately arrived and their first thing to do on the scene was to start bloodletting.
Of course.
没错。
Yes.
So these doctors drained poor old George of about five pints of blood in less than twenty four hours.
Oh my gosh.
That is, shewins tend to have like 10 pints of blood, so they just took half of George Washington out of him.
They also gave him laxatives, made him gargle vinegar and molasses, and applied blistering agents to his throat.
Oh my gosh.
That's crazy.
Such a tough way to go dude.
Also the guy's got wooden teeth.
So anyway, George Washington did in fact die that night, almost certainly from the treatment and not the sore throat.
One doctor actually that was there wanted to cut a hold in the cut a hole in his windpipe, which is like an unanesthetized tracheotomy.
Luckily he was outvoted by the other other medical professionals, but I think that this goes to show that even sometimes the best medical minds of any particular era can can get a little carried away with their ideas around particular visions of science.
So medicine finally moved away from this when?
Honestly, like not that long ago.
Oh, okay.
So, you know, around the eighteen thirties, we did start to see some level of skepticism emerge but bloodletting still continued for decades.
Momentum is a hell of a drug.
In the late eighteen hundreds to early nineteen hundreds, there was this new terrible theory that emerged called auto intoxication.
The idea here was that your intestines are basically a cesspool poisoning you from within causing all disease.
So honestly not that dissimilar from the Egyptian idea of your bowels being a rotted out fruit bowl.
And this led to people surgically removing perfectly healthy colons, taking having daily laxative routines or extreme enema protocols.
I don't
know if I know what I wanna know what an extreme enema protocol Okay.
This was something I was not planning on bringing up, now that you bring it up, I found some crazy images of these Victorian ass bellows, you know, like the big cartoon accordion looking thing you use to like Yo, fan a dog.
They have ones that go in your butt.
对。
Yes.
Oh my God.
I am so glad I didn't have an upset tummy in eighteen fifties England.
Friend of the show, John Harvey Kellogg, the Corn Flakes anti masturbation guy who ran the Battle Creek Sanitarium which like, oh my God, imagine appointing a serial magnate to just like run a healthcare center.
My god.
Honestly, like that actually sounds pretty fairly 2025, so maybe I shouldn't complain.
But he used to prescribe yogurt enemas and 15 quart water enemas to his patients.
He was also big on extreme diet restrictions, really not big on masturbation, also was into eugenics.
Again, the amount of diet advocates on this show, they're also super into eugenics, I think should lead people to question everything that underpins our desire to control people and bodies.
People would stay at his sanatorium for weeks, get multiple daily enemas and only eat specific foods, also including cornflakes.
By the 1920s to 30s, some actual science started to really catch up and was like, hey, this is complete bullshit.
And the theory tended to be abandoned by mainstream medicine really only about a hundred years ago.
But then I'm like, has it been abandoned?
Because then it reminds me of the apple cider vinegar docu series thing where the girl goes to that place and does like the coffee enemas and eats certain foods.
It's like the exact same thing.
Yeah, exactly.
And I think that another theme of the show is that a lot of these bad ideas never fully die.
They just hibernate or evolve in alternate medicine communities waiting for the right cultural moment.
So looking to the nineteen seventies, we saw this perfect storm.
The environmental movement and the heightened awareness of like actual environmental toxins came onto the scene.
There was Watergate.
Because people have got to know whether or not their president's a crook.
Well, I'm not a crook.
Sort of instilled in people a mistrust of institutions and there was the explosion of hippie culture in the back to the land movement.
Of people really becoming interested in clean eating, natural foods and healthy foods.
And the logic was that if corporations are poisoning the planet then they must be poisoning our bodies too, which is intuitive but not scientific.
And again, it just sort of shows this way that we look at as a culture, we tend to look at these big systemic issues like companies are a 100% are poisoning the air and water, but the way we deal with it is by putting coffee in our butts, I guess.
Because I guess that's easier than voting.
I'll vote any day rather than get stuff in my butt.
An alternative medicine started to rebrand everything.
Ting became a juice cleanse.
Colonix became colon hydrotherapy and it's really just the same it's a linguistic sleight of hand.
It's the same thing with a fancy or a different name and it can sometimes give things this legitimate sciency sheen.
Looking to the nineteen nineties and to the February, Oprah, Doctor Oz, there are all these celebrity endorsements, wellness blogs really came onto the scene and the Master Cleanse goes mainstream.
Thanks Beyonce, I guess.
And then in the 2010, social media really fanned these flames and with the influencer economy and the rise of affiliate links, link in bio, the clean eating movement and Instagram aesthetics and juice cleanses really being consciously branded as this thing that is cute and fun and you like wanna take a picture of it and put it in your grid.
Now we have that $6,300,000,000,000 industry and I think that that is just again sort of shows this perfect moment and I think particularly with the rise of the make America healthy again movement where we are again seeing some really valid attention being paid to environmental concerns.
But unfortunately, when it gets refracted through some really bad faith argumentation, it comes out the other side just and don't eat processed foods.
对。
Yep.
That's the that's the messaging.
没错。
Yeah.
So is there underlying psychology here that's going on or?
Yeah, so there's three main psychological drivers here morality, the idea that some foods are inherently good.
Some foods are inherently bad, pure, impure, healthy, unhealthy, just making everything a binary.
The idea of controller agency when you feel like you can't necessarily control if companies are dumping chemicals into rivers.
You can control what goes in your butt, I guess, and in your mouth.
So it's like a way.
Hopefully.
Hopefully.
So restores the sense of control or agency over your body.
And like we talked about in our cult episode, it provides this idea of identity and belonging.
The coffee enema community.
That sounds like a really tough community, dude.
It does.
So food and moral issues, how does this fall into the belief in detoxing?
对。
Yeah.
So if you pay attention to wellness language, these foods aren't just unhealthy, they're toxic.
Poisonous, they're evil, they're the devil.
Gluten is the devil.
Sugar is literally poison is the thing that RFK said.
Processed food is fake food.
It's poisonous.
Seed oils are killing you.
So clean eating linguistically implies that all other eating is dirty eating and every bite you take becomes evidence of your either goodness or inherent sin.
There was research in twenty eighteen of 1,000 participants that was looking at disgust sensitivity and found that it really highly correlated with purity based moral judgments.
So we as humans were evolved to have disgust in order to avoid contaminated food, right?
Like you wanna look at a rotted pear and you want your ancestor to be like, yeah, not gonna eat that.
That's not gonna feel good inside of me.
But our brain gets really confused and starts to extend that same sort of gut.
We even talk about having a gut reaction.
That same visceral disgust response now extends to moral condemnation of what other people eat.
当你
When you
like hear those terms is what you're saying.
对。
Yes.
没错。
Yeah.
很好。
Good.
Like how often do you have athletes be like, oh my God, I ate all this like junk food and I feel, I feel terrible.
对。
Yeah.
And it's like much more of a morality thing.
是的。
Yeah.
Well, I mean, some people could feel terrible if all they ate was that all Correct.
这个
The
对。
Yes.
But yeah, the way that it is typically used is what you're saying.
Yes, there's like a morale and like people do it all the time.
Like this is something that really frustrates me with the language stigmatizing folks with lesser access to high quality food and food availability as there's a lot of stigmatizing language there.
And as people have moved away from organized religions, secular society has basically needed new purity rituals.
So instead of doing sweat lodges or going to the vomitorium, we have juice cleanses.
In Lent, people used to give things up but now we have colonics.
Instead of confession, we do detoxes.
So what wellness culture is essentially offering is salvation through consumption.
You can be a better person.
You can buy your way to purity.
You can just get it at Whole Foods and church attendance has declined people still have this need to feel pure, absolved, redeemed.
And now wellness culture, I think a lot of times for people fills that spiritual void and you can really see it with the intensity that people tend to latch on to these ideas with.
In practice, I will have people that they get in this all or nothing Yeah.
Mindset too.
没错。
Yes.
I think that plays a role where people will say, I just need to have more willpower power and I can't have these things in the house or I'm going to overeat and binge on them.
So they keep them out of the house and then they're like, I just need to do my my reset with my juice cleanse.
I'm gonna do that reset and then I'm gonna like keep all of these things out of the house.
It's that control idea.
对。
Yes.
So I see that a lot in the athletic population.
没错。
Yeah.
And again, it's a cycle that perpetuates itself because when you restrict a certain substance or a certain food, you're gonna be giving it an emotional charge that it wouldn't otherwise have.
And so as someone in recovery, I understand that feeling of being anxious around food that has that charge and of wanting to regain control over it And juice cleanses offer a superficial feeling of
控制
control
temporarily.
And eating disorders
that are
rooted in control.
And rooted in control.
And so, I mean, juice cleanses can be a bottled version of that.
It's like a systematic form of restriction but instead of being labeled as an eating disorder because Beyonce did it and because it looks good on social media, it's not an eating disorder, it's a cleanse.
对。
Mhmm.
And I feel like this makes it pretty hard for people in eating disorder recovery as well, right?
没错。
For sure.
Because it's the same idea of food moralization, the black and white thinking and the same sort of punishment redemption cycle.
Like I ate badly this weekend.
I have to cleanse on Monday, which is just textbook restrict binge purge cycle, but with updated branding.
And there was research in 2017 by Turner and Lefevre with almost 700 participants, which is awesome, that found that fifty percent of health food account followers meet the criteria for orthorexia.
And then there was a 2024 study that found that a single exposure to clean eating content increased the risk of disordered eating behaviors by threefold.
So ED recovery really to my assessment requires rejecting this idea of food moralization which detox culture actively undermines that recovery work of food doesn't just fall into binary good bad, right?
And that's a hard way to live.
Living in that nuance is not that easy.
没错。
No.
And we oftentimes are craving that control and a simple answer, correct?
是的。
Yes.
And so, you know, we live in this time of profound uncertainty.
There's climate crisis, political chaos, post pandemic, economic precarity, no one can afford eggs and our food system feels opaque and dangerous.
And folks when they feel like they can't control things like climate change, they can't control politicians, They feel like they can control what goes in their individual mouths and detoxing provides this tangible action against abstract threats.
So it creates this powerful illusion of safety and agency on the individual level that isn't potent at that level and certainly isn't potent at the level of policy and systems.
And again, I think athletes are especially vulnerable because we're already steeped in this culture of extreme body control and optimization.
So a lot of times when conventional medicine dismisses vague symptoms like chronic fatigue, brain fog, GI issues, post viral syndrome, wellness culture will validate that.
So many people fall into this stuff because folks haven't listened to them and haven't said, oh, yeah, that sounds like a real issue.
Let's talk about that.
当我
When I
am working with people for the first time, I get this really extensive history on them and we'll ask some pretty detailed questions.
And in the session, a lot of people will be like, wow, I feel like I, in the past when I've met with people, they just haven't listened to me, and this is really great to be able to talk about this in detail.
是的。
Yeah.
And I mean, I think part of it too is just the way that our system's set up too.
没错。
Totally.
Doctors don't have that much time unfortunately.
对。
Yeah.
And I'm privileged to be able to do that as a practitioner, I guess.
But you get to ask people how they feel.
Shockingly low bar, but glad you're clearing it.
So what about social media?
I feel like this plays a role too.
I mean, and I see it play a role.
Thankfully, feel like I've liked enough Health At Every Size account that I'm getting slightly fewer mason jars full of celery gunk.
I mean, it's
scary what people get, like one wrong click on a video or something and you're like whole algorithm's Yeah.
For sure.
So there's so many, there's this visual message on social media of like this is what clean looks like and it's the perfect minimalist, perfect smoothie, perfect smoothie bowls.
This is what pure looks like.
This is what healthy looks like.
And wellness online starts to become people's core identity.
So you're not just eating a certain way, you are a certain kind of person.
You're either like toxic and poisoned or you're seeking out purity and cleanliness and it creates this vicious feedback loop where the more you invest financially, socially, psychologically, the harder it becomes to question these things.
And when your identity is bound up in these practices, admitting unnecessary, you know, detoxing means admitting that you wasted your time, your money, your energy, and your social capital.
So we're psychologically incentivized on the inside to not even admit to ourselves that like, this may not be working.
I don't feel very good.
Fitness influencers I think are especially pernicious selling detox tea while highlighting various angles of their bodies which most of the time is from genetics and or, I mean, you just never know why someone's body looks a certain way, but it's almost never because they spent $12 on detox tea.
There's these powerful visual messages that just aren't substantiated by the evidence.
And I always get a little questionable even with things, cook books, I won't but name there's certain cook books out there that I feel like almost play into this idea as well.
Yeah, I feel like so many cook books do.
Using caution when looking at those things and putting them on the pedestal as to how you're eating needs to be.
That's where I see it become problematic sometimes.
对。
Yeah.
What we view as visually appealing or zeitgeisty or fits the Instagram aesthetic may not be what science actually Exactly.
Is good.
What the evidence points to, which is boring and not that sexy and isn't gonna be plated beautifully and you're not gonna see some gorgeous woman with like perfectly tousled beach waves sipping it out of a mason jar on the beach.
So does orthorexia connect into this then?
Yeah, so, you know, I would encourage folks to go back and listen to our orthorexia episode, but a lot of times this starts as a genuine desire to feel better, but can become this all consuming pathological preoccupation with the presumed health or cleanliness or purity of certain foods.
And unlike anorexia which, you know, tends to focus on quantity and weight, thyrexia fixates on quality and purity but the outcomes can be just as harmful.
Something that's fascinating that I was seeing this round doing the research is that there's a much less of a gender gap between men and women when it comes to orthorexia.
Whereas with other eating disorders that breakdown looks a little bit different in the research and again, research is needed.
But this is especially common in athletes and fitness communities and orthorexia because it gets this veneer of being socially acceptable.
Oh, you don't have a disordered relationship to food.
You're just really into how pure and clean things are.
You're just thinking about food 90% of your day.
对。
Yeah.
And taking five million hours to plan and prep it.
没错。
Yeah.
So I think that we can get to this place where the pursuit of health can make people sick.
You can literally become physically malnourished and like we've talked about in the past, socially isolated from getting too far down this road.
So I wanna kinda take a turn here and I feel like we need to understand how the body actually detoxifies itself.
Drum roll, please.
So you were actually born with an extremely sophisticated, highly effective detoxification system that works automatically constantly twenty five seven requires zero conscious intervention and you've been doing it since the moment you were born.
Wow.
没错。
Yep.
Congratulations.
You are detoxified.
So think of it as your phone's operating system.
It's always running in the background with processes you never see.
The biggest of which is the liver.
Okay.
So I wanna can you break down the liver function for me?
What's it actually doing?
是的。
Yeah.
So the liver is your detox MVP for a lot of folks.
It can weigh three pounds but it performs over 500 different functions.
It processes literally everything you ingest, food, drinks, medications, supplements, alcohol.
It also handles producing bile for fat digestion, stores glucose as glycogen, and makes proteins for blood clotting and stores vitamins and minerals.
For athletes, it's particularly powerful because it helps regulate blood sugar during training, metabolizes protein, and stores iron.
Wow, lots of functions then.
Lots of functions, and it can regenerate itself.
It's the only organ that can regrow from 25% of original tissue, wild.
Shout out to you liver.
It's like a snake.
I know, right?
It's like a lizard, like when you cut off the tail, your liver can grow back.
So how does the actual detoxification process in the liver work?
它是
So it's
a two phase system and phase one enzymes like cytochrome P450 family chemically modify toxins.
They add oxygen, remove hydrogen and break chemical bonds.
They make these substances temporarily more reactive which is counterintuitive but necessary for the second phase.
So for example, alcohol gets broken down into acetaldehyde which is toxic.
And then phase two handles it.
So phase two, conjugation reactions attach molecules like glutathione and sulfate glycine to make it water soluble.
Now, that substance can dissolve in water and be excreted through urine or bile.
For example, acetaldehyde gets glutathione attached and that becomes harmless water soluble and exits via urine.
So both of these phases need vitamin b or b vitamins, amino acids and antioxidants from food as well as minerals.
But you can get and should get all of those things from a normal balanced diet eating vegetables, greens, quality protein, whole foods.
You don't need any fancy supplements, just food.
I do wonder though what people are gonna come back and say though, well, what if
I don't eat a balanced diet, you know?
Then get right with that.
Eat a balanced diet.
Because they're like, if you're not eating a balanced diet, juice cleansing isn't
gonna Right?
当然。
Do
one, eat a salad every so often.
And like a balanced diet doesn't have to be that complicated.
Balance doesn't mean salad bowls every single day.
It balance means balance.
I think that can be hard for some people because maybe they have texture issues or maybe What they're picky I usually try to tell people or work with people on is meeting them where they're at.
Like, okay, what is one vegetable that you would consider eating?
Or what is one fruit that you know you like?
And can we build that in somehow?
Like, maybe it's only blueberries, but okay, great.
对。
Yeah.
Then only eat blueberries and see where we can get with that.
Yes, exactly.
But I think, you know, what we don't want people to hear is like, if you eat a single fast food French fry, your body is rendered like a toxic wasteland.
Yeah, exactly.
Because it touched something other than beef tallow.
So that's the liver.
那关于
What about
the kidneys?
What are their role?
Kidneys, also another detox MVP.
So these are two organs that are about the size of a fist doing absolutely baller heroic work.
Your kidneys can filter 200 quarts of blood every single day.
It's like 50 gallons.
对。
Yes.
Your entire blood volume gets filtered like 40 times daily.
So there's this constant cleaning cycle.
A lot of individual variation here, potentially two quarts of urine daily containing urea.
That's a result of protein metabolism, creatinine from muscle, as well as excess minerals and metabolic waste, which is like, I know that anytime I've had something with vitamin B, looks like a lot of that comes right back down.
Bright yellow.
Bright yellow.
They also help regulate blood pressure, electrolyte balance, red blood cell production and acid base balance.
So again, you don't need to be drinking alkaline water.
Your kidneys do that.
Can Can you water?
当然。
Yep.
One of the things that is necessary for this process is adequate hydration.
So if you're not drinking enough, that might be tough for your body's detoxing system, but that doesn't mean you need to be drinking $45 of like grapefruit juice every single day.
You just need to get your Stanley cup.
Remember you said that if Yes, I
the giant Stanley.
If I get one, then I have to tell you Zoey.
You have to tell me.
You have to text me immediately.
So are there any other systems that help with detoxification?
Yeah, there's so many things in our body that help with detoxification.
So lungs expel CO2, which is a major metabolic waste product and some volatile organic compounds with every single breath.
So if you've ever smelled alcohol in someone's breath, that's actually volatile compounds being eliminated through their lungs.
Or they're just eating a ketogenic diet.
Or they're eating a ketogenic Yes.
Know, most people take on the order of 20,000 breaths daily.
You have a constant gas exchange.
You are constantly removing waste from your body.
One of our biggest detoxing organs is the skin.
And you do eliminate small amounts of waste through sweat but this is a really minor route like 1% of detox.
So the idea that saunas and sweating can be a way of removing tons of toxins, also not a thing.
When you look at salt on the chemical level, it's mostly water, salt, trace minerals, so it's not a significant detox mechanism.
Love a good sauna but it's definitely not replacing
They're over hyping.
这是
It's
Over what hyping.
Again, I love to be warm and sitting around on some nice wood with some hot Finnish gentlemen, but I'm not kidding myself.
I will say it does make me feel better.
So maybe it's a placebo effect,
but I can And it does feel feel nice to be warm, you know?
But like again, it's like do you feel bad because you were toxic?
不是。
No.
对。
Yeah.
Maybe.
是的。
Yeah.
And then you have your lymphatic system which is this network of vessels which moves fluid, waste products and immune cells throughout the body.
It collects cellular waste from tissues and filters them through your lymph nodes and then returns that fluid to the bloodstream.
Unlike the heart, the lymphatic system doesn't have a pump and it moves via muscle contractions which is why movement and exercise helps lymph flow.
There's also a lot of pretty kooky ideas of specific yoga moves, really revitalizing the system or scraping yourself or brushing.
It's one of those things where sure, technically, if you literally stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down, that's like you can raise your arms over your head and that is plenty to help lymph circulate.
Wow.
I'm getting my lymph circulated right now.
对。
Yeah.
Would we have survived as a species if we needed these like Baroque rituals to move lymph around?
Probably not.
We also have the GI tract.
So we have like we talked about on our shit talk episode, trillions of bacteria living inside of us that break down food, produce vitamins and train the immune system.
Your intestinal wall will selectively absorb nutrients, block pathogens and it's this really sophisticated barrier system.
It eliminates solid waste containing undigested food, dead bacteria, dead cells from gut lining, bile from liver and your gut bacteria literally eat some of the toxins and break them down which is a free biological remediation system.
Now, if your gut is not working, like we said, that's a problem.
But that doesn't mean that you need to be doing coffee enemas 10 times a day.
Which particularly because so many things like enemas and colonics operate in the large intestine, which like most of the things that we would consider toxins get filtered out in the small intestine.
So again, it's this thing where like you will feel cleaned out because like, yeah, you just put a car wash in your butthole, but like you're not there physically that is not what is happening.
Here's what I want you to do.
I want you to forget all about January.
Seriously, January 1 is just a Wednesday.
It has no magical properties.
It's portal.
The New Year New You Industrial Complex wants you to believe that transformation requires a specific calendar date, a detox, and probably some expensive supplement stacks that a guy named Chad is selling online.
But you know what actually works?
Just starting now.
While everyone else is waiting for permission from the calendar, you could already be building momentum.

I'm kind of a weenie about running in the cold, but I'm also a weenie about doing long runs on the treadmill.
So I guess I'm just a weenie.
That's my cross to bear.
Thankfully, Janji makes winter running toasty and actually fun with their amazing cold weather gear.
I'm in love with the Aurora fleece tight, a fully fleece lined running tight with mega pockets that's great for long runs and work outs in the cold.
You can fit so many snacks in these bad boys.
So many snacks.
I also love the thermal runner insulated jacket, which can stand up to even the coldest days when I need to log some miles.

So why doesn't this system need help from these detox products then?
Think about it.
These systems are self cleaning by design.
We have evolved over millions of years to handle environmental exposure.
These things work twenty four seven without conscious thought and they don't need rebooting, resetting or external intervention unless you have a specific medical condition like liver disease, kidney disease.
All of these things function at high efficiency and no amount of banana juice or castor oil is going to reboot, revamp or change them in any meaningful way.
So compare these to detox tea.
Your liver processes thousands of different chemicals simultaneously using hundreds of enzymes.
Tea just makes you poop and pee more.
It doesn't enhance actual enzymatic detoxification pathways.
And I think it's really actually so cool and fun to just think about the fact that your body is so much more sophisticated than any $60 tea, any castor oil, any celery juice that you could buy at Whole Foods.
Trust your biology.
Trust evolution.
Eat some fruits and veggies and fiber.
Eat fruits and veggies and fiber.
You don't have to be guzzling juice.
So if our bodies do this naturally, is there evidence or where is the evidence for detox products?
So there was a twenty fifteen comprehensive review in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics that found almost no clinical evidence supporting detox diets.
There were some studies as a part of that review that showed potential very small statistically significant benefits that were plagued by flawed methodologies that were pointed out in this review like tiny sample sizes or no controls.
There's a twenty twenty four analysis reviewing the scientific literature and the consensus is quote, detoxes and cleanses cannot be recommended.
Shocking.
There's been some smaller studies that show things like milk thistle having promise in animals, but we don't have adequate human trials at this time.
And a big problem here is that detox products aren't regulated by the FDA.
They're not uniform and they haven't been tested for safety or efficacy.
So some dietary supplements can actually cause liver damage through drug induced injury.
很多
A lot of
the detox products do have higher levels of like milk thistle in them and people don't realize that if you're using that for a longer period of time, oh, you know, this could really have some downsides.
Like what?
Like, Well, there like, like liver damage.
Sure, sure, yeah.
It's that thing of like people who become so obsessed with this idea of like, I gotta boost my metabolism and I've gotta detox and I've gotta rev and I've gotta do all of these external processes and you have the Brian Johnson nine hundred supplement stack.
That is very challenging
support detox, but then you are causing harm to the organ that detoxes.
没错。
Exactly.
So what about the studies with weight loss?
Because I hear this one from people, I should say, and not just athletes.
I mean, work with other people that don't consider themselves athletes,
and they're like, I'm going on a detox because I need to lose weight.
So this is gonna blow your mind.
Science shows that if you don't eat food, you might lose weight.
Calorie restriction.
So there is a 2015 study on 84 women who did a lemon detox diet and they all lost weight, but so did a control group on a equivalent low calorie placebo diet.
So all of the studies of this which there aren't a ton because again like science is sort of we don't, what the hell?
This is not Weight a loss comes from severe caloric restriction, not detoxification.
Again, that nonsense video about like how fat is a rebound effect from toxins, like what?
