What's up, guys?

Speaker 0

So listen.

Speaker 0

Artificial intelligence, AI for short is what we call it, it can help us in the field.

Speaker 0

There's a lot of people that have debated whether AI is coming after our jobs.

Speaker 0

And right now, I think it's safe to say it's not climbing on the roof to change your compressor, blah blah blah blah blah.

Speaker 0

It's not doing that right now.

Speaker 0

Maybe one day in the future, who knows what's gonna happen?

Speaker 0

But right now, it's not.

Speaker 0

So we can use AI as a tool to help us in the field to be a more efficient technician.

Speaker 0

So on this podcast, I have Joshua Souders, and I got Jim Fultz from Copeland.

Speaker 0

And we're gonna have a discussion on how AI can help a technician in the field, like, practically, and make our jobs a little bit more easier and more efficient compared to twenty, thirty years ago.

Speaker 0

So let's get into this, guys, with Josh and Jim from Copeland.

Speaker 0

Alright, gentlemen.

Speaker 0

So AI, it's a topic that can be controversial.

Speaker 0

It can be polarizing, heated.

Speaker 0

There's people that like it, people that love it, people that hate it, and people that don't understand it.

Speaker 0

So let's get into this and talk about AI and and how it could help the HVAC professional, and we can talk about what Copeland's doing from an AI standpoint as well.

Speaker 0

So, Jim, I'm gonna start with you on this one.

Speaker 0

Give me your sort of initial thoughts on the whole AI thing as it pertains to the the industry.

Speaker 2

Thanks for having us here today.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Not a problem.

Speaker 2

This is this is awesome.

Speaker 2

And, yeah, AI is something that there's been a lot of talk of it lately.

Speaker 2

And and to summarize what I've heard as far as the an overall view of the industry, technicians don't need to worry about being replaced by AI, that the job is always going to be there.

Speaker 2

We need the hands in the field to actually do the work.

Speaker 2

And I heard a I'd give a quote here of a show that I was at earlier this spring as far as AI within the office setting.

Speaker 2

And and it it went like this, that office personnel do not need to be worrying about being replaced by AI, but they should be concerned about being replaced by others who know how to use AI in the office setting.

Speaker 2

AI is something that we are all going to to see, to benefit, to embrace.

Speaker 2

As far as the technician side of things, the clearest way that I can describe AI is just simply like this, that AI is only as good as what goes into it.

Speaker 2

And and my example is if there's a furnace that has a code that says the limit circuit is defective.

Speaker 2

Well, if a technician asks AI and the only thing that AI got input into it was a flame rollout.

Speaker 2

And they look at that.

Speaker 2

They're gonna say, hey.

Speaker 2

I know what the problem is.

Speaker 2

You know, the limit circuit's bad.

Speaker 2

Well, what they don't realize is that that limit circuit could have opened up from a dirty air filter, from a fan blower that that failed, from a whole bunch of other things.

Speaker 2

And so from the AI troubleshooting side of things, it's going to take a number of years for all of that information to be input into AI for it to be valuable and usable in that type of aspect.

Speaker 2

Now, that being said, I'll finish this up here with the fact that any piece of AI that has had the time and knowledge put into it, those pieces of AI already, and they already exist in the field.

Speaker 2

We'll share, I think, a little bit later with Copeland app.

Speaker 2

All that information in there is going to give a lot more accurate response and give good credible information back to the technician.

Speaker 0

So, Josh, I'll get to you in a minute.

Speaker 0

I just wanna follow-up on what you said there, Jim, about the office staff can get replaced by people that know and understand AI and how to implement it into the tasks of the day because what that person is now doing, if they do it correctly, is making their life more efficient, and it's making life more efficient for everybody else that is part of that team from dispatching to quoting to getting back to customers in a timely manner.

Speaker 0

I worked for a big commercial company for many, many years, and the phone on busy days constantly ringing, constantly ringing, constantly ringing.

Speaker 0

And the dispatcher is picking up the phone, but she's got a she's got another phone that she's talking to tech and it's it's like this all day.

Speaker 0

So AI can help with stuff like that.

Speaker 0

We have AI that can answer phones.

Speaker 0

It can respond.

Speaker 0

It can schedule jobs.

Speaker 0

It can do all this stuff in the background where someone that's doing this, there's still customers being taken care of in the AI universe, if you will.

Speaker 0

So that that's just I just kinda wanted to touch on that point quickly before I went to Josh.

Speaker 0

Josh, what are your thoughts on AI when it comes to this industry?

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

So, you know, I think, first of all, I you know, at this point, you know, it's my belief that AI is is more of an inevitability.

Speaker 3

Right?

Speaker 3

It's kinda like, you know, forty years ago, people talking about PCs and whether they were gonna be big.

Speaker 3

You know?

Speaker 3

It's gonna happen.

Speaker 3

You're you're not gonna stop it.

Speaker 3

And so the people that lead the edge of the pack learn how to utilize the tools properly.

Speaker 3

And that's really what AI is for, I think, most people.

Speaker 3

It's a tool.

Speaker 3

Right?

Speaker 3

They're gonna be the ones that are getting ahead and and able to leverage that skill set to gain an advantage in the market.

Speaker 3

Right?

Speaker 3

I just read that NVIDIA has $1,000,000,000,000 in back order product.

Speaker 3

So they have secure orders for a billion dollars in processors for AI.

Speaker 3

Right?

Speaker 3

I mean, these are big companies that are making huge investments, and so it's gonna happen at some point.

Speaker 3

So the sooner you can learn to use the tools, the sooner you can get familiar with them, the sooner you can gain an advantage over your competitors with with the products.

Speaker 0

I wanna give you an example where last week, I used ChatGPT to look at an HVAC problem that it was part of an insurance investigation.

Speaker 0

So I'm not gonna name company names and addresses and all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 0

I'll just give you the generalized scope of what happened, but it's a it's a high rise building.

Speaker 0

It's a condo building.

Speaker 0

It's got a mechanical room in the penthouse, and they have I I don't know what's in the suites.

Speaker 0

It's probably fan coils, I would imagine, but they go from a boiler system to a chiller system, and it's it's the single pipe.

Speaker 0

So the hot water and the cold water uses the exact same pipe.

Speaker 0

It's gotta be switched over manually with valving and stuff like that.

Speaker 0

And twice now, when they've gone from cooling to heating, twice on the same floor, a copper pipe burst down down the middle of the pipe, and it just it burst in in the the the burst is, like, eight, nine inches long, and it just burst.

Speaker 0

And we're trying to figure out why that happened, and we've got a lot of different ideas and theories.

Speaker 0

I said, you know what?

Speaker 0

I'm gonna type this problem into ChatGPT and just see what it comes up with.

Speaker 0

And it came up with, honestly, a lot of really valid scenarios that it that could have happened.

Speaker 0

And now with these scenarios in front of us, things that we kind of thought, but it went a little bit more in-depth on each one.

Speaker 0

Things that you may not have thought, like little little bits of detail.

Speaker 0

And now that there's, like, three or four different scenarios that it came up with, we can go through all of those scenarios and start eliminating what we thought may k.

Speaker 0

Maybe it's not that one because this happened and that happened.

Speaker 0

Maybe it's not that one.

Speaker 0

And we can finally get down to to the one we think it is the most and prove that's why it happened.

Speaker 0

So I'm finding that and you guy you guys weigh in on this, and I'll start with you, Jim, but ChatGPT in itself seems to be getting smarter when it comes to problems that could happen in the field and technicians can utilize to get an edge on maybe their competitor or their coworker.

Speaker 0

I'm I'm not saying to compete with your coworker, but just if if they were there and you're on a callback and you throw it in the ChatGPT, this is what happened.

Speaker 0

Technician found this.

Speaker 0

I'm back.

Speaker 0

What could the problem be?

Speaker 0

You can get some really valid information.

Speaker 0

Jim, what do you think?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So, you know, that goes back to my earlier comment about as more information is put into this, as more of the solutions are input that creates that larger database for the various scenarios.

Speaker 2

And what I like that you said about as you were going through that is the fact that you may not have that specific solution in that list, but the thought process, the the idea of, hey, let's look at this.

Speaker 2

Let's look at this.

Speaker 2

The if nothing else, AI created a open mindset to say, hey.

Speaker 2

Let's look beyond this little thing that we thought it was.

Speaker 2

Let's look at all of the possibilities here.

Speaker 2

Is there anything else we can think of and to add to that?

Speaker 2

And then the biggest key to that is and and this would be a question, how did ChatGPT know all of those solutions?

Speaker 2

Somebody had to put that that in.

Speaker 2

And and so where is it getting that to to know know all of those solutions?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It is true.

Speaker 0

Where is it getting at that information?

Speaker 0

And and, Josh, I mean, we we come to you.

Speaker 0

It's getting it scouring the Internet.

Speaker 0

Correct?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Simple?

Speaker 0

Simple as

Speaker 3

I mean, you know, it's it's scouring, you know, forum posts and, you know, Reddit posts and YouTube videos and, you know, and comment sections and and different things where other people had remote problems.

Speaker 3

They input.

Speaker 3

People had discussion, came to conclusions, and and it's pulling all that and kind of, you know basically, it's aggregating that information and putting it right center in front of you very quickly, right, instead of you having to go through and find those forum posts.

Speaker 3

You know?

Speaker 3

I I it reminds me of, like, working on my car back in the day.

Speaker 3

Right?

Speaker 3

You're like, ah, man.

Speaker 3

I have this issue.

Speaker 3

Can't figure it out.

Speaker 3

You go to your car's forums, and you might have three or four for your make and model, and you search and and sort, and you finally you find hidden in this one thread, oh, this is the issue.

Speaker 3

This is my exact issue, and here's the solution.

Speaker 3

Right?

Speaker 3

AI bubbles all back to the top very quickly, very instantly.

Speaker 3

And and I'll say, you know, if you take any any AI model today with ChatGPT, Gemini, whatever it is, just realize that the current state today, when you use that model, that's the worst it's ever gonna be.

Speaker 3

It's only gonna get better.

Speaker 3

It's only gonna get more information.

Speaker 3

It's only gonna get faster and more accurate at predicting the output that you need.

Speaker 3

So just, you know, realize that it is gonna keep improving.

Speaker 3

So if you don't doesn't work perfectly right now, I mean, give it a a couple months and, you you know, you never know what what you're gonna see.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

不对。

No.

Speaker 0

Good good point.

Speaker 0

And I I really like the point that you made about going if you have a specific problem in life, like your car, but let's say it's it's a it's an HVAC problem, there are techs that will go into Facebook groups and ask a question, like you said, Reddit, go into other forums, one of the old ones, HVAC Talk.

Speaker 0

They'll go into these places and try to find the information, and it could take them time to get a response or find what they're exactly looking for.

Speaker 0

But if you get into an AI app that, like you said, scours all of this and it gives you the top answers within seconds, why wouldn't you utilize that instead of digging and and and trying to spend time looking further down or getting further down the rabbit hole into all these forums and discussion groups when you don't have to?

Speaker 2

Just one more piece of that, and and that's that's where I was looking at us going is is, you know, Facebook discussion, Reddit discussion.

Speaker 2

And I would like to add to that then that as you're looking at AI, to make sure that you understand that those could be the sources, and those sources could be a aged technician, or it could be somebody that's brand new in the field that said, hey, I tried this, and and for some reason, something worked when it might not have even really been the the issue.

Speaker 2

And so the source where you're getting your solutions can be all over with AI.

Speaker 2

With with, like, Google AI, you can actually see where those sources came from.

Speaker 2

They're gonna they're gonna show the the web page where that came from, whether it's whether it's Reddit or whether it's a manufacturer.

And if you got some good manufacturer or scientific research that that's where that's coming from, there's a lot more confidence that I would have in saying, yeah.

Speaker 2

These are viable solutions.

Speaker 2

So just just something to keep in mind as you look at AI.

Speaker 2

AI does not necessarily mean your answer that you got was a professional answer.

Speaker 0

Real people, real service.

Speaker 0

没错

Yeah.

Speaker 0

That that's a good point too.

Speaker 0

好的

Okay.

Speaker 0

So let let's turn it to the the average technician.

Speaker 0

It's a young it's a young kid just starting out.

Speaker 0

Maybe they're just out of trade school and maybe got a year of following a tech around.

Speaker 0

Now they're getting thrown into the fire.

Speaker 0

They're going to service calls on their own.

Speaker 0

How can a a new technician start utilizing AI to their benefit.

Speaker 0

So they're not calling because let me let me give an example.

Speaker 0

As a young technician, I did not like calling another mechanic or another tech or the boss because I've you're putting yourself in a vulnerable position where you could get yelled at and what are you doing?

Speaker 0

Like, you know what I mean?

Speaker 0

It's it's it's a very tough spot to be in when you're learning because you don't know what the outcome is gonna be on the other side of that phone when you call that person.

Speaker 0

Are you gonna get yelled at?

Speaker 0

Are you gonna get the right information?

Speaker 0

Are they gonna hang up the phone?

Speaker 0

Who knows what's gonna happen?

Speaker 0

So for that young tech that's trying to find their way in the field, how can they best utilize AI in order to maybe circumvent the whole call in the boss thing?

Speaker 0

Jim, I'll I'll start with you on that.

Speaker 2

So AI, again, I think reiterates what what I've already shared as far as just being aware that it came from.

Speaker 2

AI is something and and this is a point I'd like to drive with that as far as, you know, you you can go to AI and it says, well, it could be this.

Speaker 2

It could be this.

Speaker 2

If if you're getting multiple options, then you're not going to to just go to, oh, this is the option, and and you're confident the first thing you see is is what the solution is.

Speaker 2

This is the piece that that I would like to add to that.

Speaker 2

As a new technician, whenever you're working through a issue with a system and something comes to light, it's in your best interest to try to work through everything that's going on there before you go to the homeowner and say, hey.

Speaker 2

I found your problem.

Speaker 2

You got a burnout transformer.

Speaker 2

And the homeowner's like, great.

Speaker 2

You know?

Speaker 2

What are we looking at?

Speaker 2

We replaced the transformer.

Speaker 2

Wait a minute.

Speaker 2

There was something else that burned out the transformer.

Speaker 2

There was another step that needed to be taken and done.

Speaker 2

And so even with AI, just taking it slow, making sure that that you've got clear to the bottom of what you're you're looking at, that the solution is completely fixed before you you go and and take it to that that next step of of sharing with the homeowner and and saying, I know the the full solution.

Speaker 2

AI is could give you a partial solution just like when you're troubleshooting, you may only get that first part of that solution and and not taking the confidence that, hey.

Speaker 2

AI帮了我。

AI helped me.

Speaker 2

I got to the bottom of this.

Speaker 2

Everything's good.

Speaker 2

And making sure that that there isn't a secondary problem or or issue that created that.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

Josh, do have any anything to add to that, what Jim was saying?

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

I mean, like I said earlier, AI is a tool.

Speaker 3

Right?

Speaker 3

It's it's a tool just like your multimeter, just like your gauge set.

Speaker 3

It's never gonna replace your competency as a technician.

Speaker 3

It's never gonna replace the knowledge you gain over time that you can use to troubleshoot these systems.

Speaker 3

And and I think to Jim's point, you know, using AI for, you know, helping you troubleshoot, helping you point in the right direction when you're stuck, I think, is key.

Speaker 3

But without the the baseline knowledge, you know, you're it's it's not gonna really help you at the end of the day.

Speaker 3

You know, as an example, right, you come into the system, still running, something's not right, though, and you think it's a compressor issue.

Speaker 3

Right?

Speaker 3

You've you've isolated the compressor.

Speaker 3

You know, we have a a new AI in our Copa Mobile, the Scout AI.

Speaker 3

You can, you know, say, hey.

Speaker 3

For, you know, x y z model at this operating condition, what power draw should I should I expect?

Speaker 3

Expect?

Speaker 3

Right?

Speaker 3

And you gotta know, you know, I gotta use my multimeter.

Speaker 3

I gotta see what power draw is.

Speaker 3

You know?

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 3

Copeland's specification says it should be, you know, this much.

Speaker 3

I'm off by, you know, 300 watts.

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 3

It is a compressor issue.

Speaker 3

Right?

Speaker 3

And then, you know, what's the next step?

Speaker 3

What caused the compressor issue?

Speaker 3

Is it just the compressor age?

Speaker 3

Is it really compressor, or is it something else that that induced a premature compressor failure?

Speaker 3

So that's where I think AI as a tool is super powerful is it gives you a quick reference information, the quick lookups, the ability to find information quickly or point you in the right direction, but it's never gonna replace that baseline knowledge that that you as a technician need to constantly be growing and adapting and learning.

Speaker 3

学习。

Learning.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

So let's talk about what Copeland is doing on this front.

Speaker 0

Because, I mean, we we got the Copeland mobile app and and your product that's kind of embedded into that Scout, which is an AI tool.

Speaker 0

It's what's been around for about a year now.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Something like that?

Speaker 3

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 3

没错。

Yep.

Speaker 3

Scout

Scout's been around for an about a year.

Speaker 3

Copeland Mobile was around for for a long time, formerly Emerson Mobile.

Speaker 3

What we're doing now is we're trying to consolidate everything into one ecosystem.

Speaker 3

So if you're using what would have been called White Rogers controls, those kind of things, they're trying to slowly consolidate everything in a one stop shop, and then Scout AI will kinda unify and allow you to cross reference stuff very quickly and, you know, just by speaking to it, basically.
