I am the king of the super stupid intro, and this is the podcast that helps you remember some things you might have forgotten along the way, as well as help you remember some things you forgot to know in the first place.
And today is a class from my good friend, Mufich from NCI, the National Comfort Institute, talking about how to add duct renovations to your product offerings.
It's something that is a win win for everyone if you know how to do it properly, and Adam is somebody who really knows about this.

So take a look at that.
I just wanted to slip that in before we got into the content.
Here we go.
Adam Mufich talking about adding duct renovations to your product offerings.
Let's get going.
My name is Adam Mufich.
I work for National Comfort Institute.
I've been doing HVAC for most of my life.
I've been doing it correctly for maybe five or six years.
Screwed up a lot of houses, fixed quite a few in the last few years too, and my goal now is to try to help people and share what I've learned the hard way.
Right?
So this class is basically about the different things you could do for existing systems and what different airflow repairs we could make in existing homes.
Right?
When we're retrofitting, maybe we're changing the equipment, or maybe we're just trying to improve the airflow.
I want to give you a little bit of my background and this first slide, I wanted to pay homage and pay respects to my beginning.
I have a heavy background in sheet metal.
I learned how to fabricate sheet metal very early on from a guy.
He was a lot older than me.
He actually just passed away this past year.
He was 97 years old.
He's the guy all the way on the right.
You could see me in my basement bar hanging out with the guys from Train Comfort Corpse back in the early eighties.
So I've been surrounded by HVAC my entire life.
It really hurt me when he passed away.
I owe a lot of what I know to him.
So, yeah, just to give you a little bit of that.
I wanted to start everything off with the state of the industry, the current state of the industry.
Where are we as a country?
So the DOE did a study.
They looked at 44 different studies from around the country, and they started looking at equipment sizing, airflow, delivered airflow, all kinds of different aspects.
So they looked at these studies and it was over quite several different years.
One of the first things they looked at in this study was in the worst case scenario, 93% of the systems were oversized according to Manual J.
The best case scenario was 33% of the systems were oversized according to Manual J.
Why do I bring that up?
The easiest way to fix airflow problems is to size the equipment properly.
So if you have a system that's grossly oversized, you don't wanna install like for like.
You wanna figure out what that home needs.
If you could reduce the size of the equipment and install the correct size equipment, a lot of those airflow problems just go away.
You reduce the static pressure and you increase the fan airflow.
So the ASME Journal of Sustainable Buildings, what they found was 50% oversizing of AC systems could result up to 91% increase of energy consumption.
So it's huge.
People are wasting energy all the time because of sizing issues.
So the number one thing when I'm teaching, I do a lot of airflow classes, duct system optimization, residential air balancing, airflow testing and diagnostics, and everyone always comes to me, what's the easiest way?
What's the silver bullet for fixing airflow problems?
And I always say, size the equipment properly.
That's number one.
You really need to do that.
And there's really no excuse not to now.
There's so many good apps.
You have Ample, Ample Energy, you have Conduit.
There's all these nice apps where you could easily walk in and figure out the required size of the equipment for a home.
Another thing in that DOE study, zero to 9% of systems were undersized according to Manual J.
So I've heard so many people come to me and say, the system was undersized.
In reality, when you actually test it and compare it to Manual J, it's not the case.
And if you want to know where these studies came from, the green states are where the particular studies from the data that I pulled was where they're from.
One of the things why people think that your equipment is undersized is because it's just not performing the way it should.
So if you use apps like MeasureQuick and you're actually measuring system performance and equipment performance, you could tell that it's not doing what it should.
If you have a five ton system and it's only a three ton capacity of what it's actually doing, the work that it's doing, you don't wanna install another five ton.
You need to fix the ductwork and install the right size system.
Eight to 29% of systems that they tested moved more than 350 CFM per ton.
That doesn't mean it was the correct airflow.
It just means it was just above 350 CFM per ton.
That's pretty bad.
Eight to 29%.
So it's basically saying that most systems in this country are not moving the correct amount of airflow.
Less than one out of three systems is moving enough airflow.
We got our stick figure crying.
We wonder why we have heat exchanger failures.
We wonder why we have compressors that go bad, blower motors that go bad.
Now they're making blower motors that are a little bit more robust.
I remember when they first came out with variable speed motors, you would have that module that would go bad.
For a while, was so expensive.
I started soldering the little making my own field repairs on those modules, right?
But I didn't fix the problem of the airflow and the static pressure sensors that actually caused the issue in the first place.
So 50 to 93 of systems tested move less than 350 CFM per ton.
93% in some cases moved less than the minimum amount of airflow.
Airflow should be set.
It should be tested.
How many of you guys out here are actually measuring airflow on a daily basis?
How do you measure airflow?
What's your methods of measuring airflow?
TrueFlow Grid?
Is anyone plotting fan airflow with static pressure?
Plotting fan airflow?
Okay.
There's different ways of doing it.
You could actually take temperature rise.
There's all different ways of doing it.
Some are more accurate than others, but it's really important to understand that you have enough airflow.
Airflow is a fluid.
A lot of people don't think about it air as a fluid, right?
But air is the means of delivering BTUs.
That's how we're moving the BTUs either into or out of a space.
That's number one.
We need to make sure the airflow is always correct.
So our little cartoons here, the guy's saying, I have airflow issues, but you also have BTU comfort and efficiency problems.
67% to a 100% of the systems tested leaks more than a 100 CFM to the outside at point one inches of water column or 25 pascals.
Are any of you guys familiar or do you do duct leakage testing?
A few of guys do duct leakage testing, so you know the terrible impact, the awful impact that duct leakage to the outside will cause.
Right?
If you have return duct leakage or supply duct leakage.
All that affects the performance of the system.
So we gotta look at every aspect of a duct system when we're trying to fix it and we're fixing comfort issues.
So once again, duct leakage to the outside of the envelope and less BTUs, less comfort, more pollutants, more humidity, and then pressurization or depressurization problems.
We're causing all these issues, and I don't know how many of you guys are actually testing.
Probably a lot of you guys.
I know a lot of you guys in here, but when you're actually testing room pressures and house pressures, you see these nuances and crazy things that could happen within a house.
So we really need to understand everything.
This was a house that I actually looked at maybe about a year and a half ago for somebody in Indiana.
This is a brand new house, very expensive house.
It looks like a nice house, right?
I went in there.
This was professionally designed by a company, the HVAC system.
The equipment was oversized.
I ran a Manual J.
The ducts were undersized.
They had excessive duct leakage in the house.
And a lot of the other things that I found in the house were the installing contractor made a bunch of mistakes.
They were not paying attention.
They did not commission the system properly.
So with all these different things that happen in new construction or even retrofit situations, there's a lot of problems that can come out of This is the key.
This is basically the pillars, the four pillars of what NCI stands for.
What we wanna do when we're looking at any home is wanna keep these four aspects in our view.
We wanna make sure we're providing a safe, a healthy, comfortable, and efficient situation for a homeowner.
And different things that we change in a home, even in the duct system, could affect those.
If we're randomly running ducts in house, we're not paying attention to the big picture, we can create a very dangerous situation with carbon monoxide and back drafting in that.
So that should always be the first and foremost thing in our mind.
So that comes down to why should we pay attention and why do we want to add duct renovations?
And the whole it's summed up in that DOE study.
Everything's broken.
There's a problem with almost every house in the country.
So many contractors out there will fabricate and make up problems to make money for their company because they want commission.
Maybe they're selling techs, they falsify things and sometimes maybe it's ignorance.
But if you master your craft and you spend time learning, you will find an issue at almost every single house you look at.
This was a job that my company that I ran for twelve, thirteen years.
We looked at this house.
This was a multimillion dollar house.
Do you guys notice anything about it?
Right?
It's got a window shaker right in the front of the house.
How do you think this homeowner feels?
He had this right after moving into the house.
He had to have a Home Depot special window unit because he was not comfortable on his 2nd Floor in the bedroom.
$1,200,000 house.
So that leads us to what do we do when we run into a situation like this?
How do we fix these situations?
So at NCI, we teach two different paths.
We need to make a decision what is our goal.
We have an air upgrade.
That's something we teach in our class Airflow Testing and Diagnostics, and then we have duct optimization, which is more like a full renovation for the duct system.
We need to decide what is our goals behind this.
I always start off with testing in the furnace.
We don't know where to start unless we have the raw data.
So we're gonna pressure profile any system.
We're gonna take our four static pressure measurements to start off with.
Before the filter, after the filter, before the coil, and after the coil.
That gives us a lot of data on where the restrictions in the system lie.
Very similar, we have an air handler, three pressure profile measurements, and we look at all those and we can analyze which side of the system is bad by taking where's our high measurements.
So static pressure is really, really important.
We really want to pay attention to static pressure, but static pressure means nothing.
It means nothing if we don't understand what is our airflow.
We could have low static pressure and low fan airflow.
Low static pressure is not always good.
We need to make sure that they correlate together.
We have the correct amount of airflow and the correct static pressure for that system.
So we want to test in.
We could either use a tool like the TrueFlow Grid or we could plot fan airflow.
好的。
Alright.
Gonna take a second to talk to you about Refrigeration Technologies' wet rag.
It's a product that our techs have used for a long time.
Works great.
It's a heat blocking putty that works just like a wet rag.
You put it around valves while brazing, put it at a valve inlet, your service valves, your evaporate your service valves, your reversing valves.
If you're replacing a reversing valve, haven't helped you, this really works great for that.
TXVs, electronic expansion valves, reusable up to 40 times with dye that lets you know when it's nearing the end of its life.
Easily withstands our torch temperatures and protects things like we talked about, compressor, paints, reversing valves, line dryers, suction dryers, liquid line dryers, bi flow dryers, basically all the dryers.
It's great for dryers, especially ones with the really short stubs.
Pain in the butt.
You don't wanna burn that paint.
You don't wanna create rust on those new dryers that you put in.
All you have to do is take it out, put it around anything you wanna protect, then put it back in the container to reuse it.
For larger areas, we've talked about this a lot.
Refrigeration Technologies also has introduced the heat shield, which you can use wet or dry and cover a larger area, like the front of a air handler or a case of ApritoQuil, for example.
Also great for aero settling or swirl tip torches, where they tend to blow out a lot more heat on the convective side works great for that.
想了解更多关于这款湿布和隔热罩的信息,请访问 refrigergetech.com。
Find out more about the original wet rag as well as heat shield by going to refrigergetech.com.
So in this situation here, this is a three ton system, and we test it out or test it in at 978 CFM.
So it's less than two and a half ton and you can kind of see what's going on.
We have 326 CFM per ton.
That's pretty low.
I'm in the Midwest.
We're in the Chicagoland area.
Normal Newer houses, you're usually 400 to four fifty CFM per ton.
So that leads me to the next thing.
I always ask and I wanna always try to talk to the homeowner.
I know a lot of people get wrapped up in, I want to fix everything.
I'm trying to change the world.
And in fact, if you guys saw a picture of my truck and my logo that I had for my company, my tagline for my company was changing the world one furnace at a time.
Sometimes you need to get out of your own way and have a conversation with the homeowner and figure out what their priorities are and focus on their priorities to try to achieve their goals.
So after we test in and we have our conversation, the interview with the customer, I'm going to go over, we're going to look at what is the air upgrade approach.
Okay?
So the air upgrade approach, basically what we're trying to do is we're trying to reduce the static pressure and increase the fan airflow.
We want to make sure we have the correct amount of fan airflow, and we wanna be at or below the rated static pressure.
And we do that by offering prepackaged duct repairs.
Most of that happens near the equipment.
So this is what like a typical air upgrade would look like.
We would rework the filter, the filter system.
A lot of times, the most common filter size what do you guys run into as far as filter sizing in your area?
16 by 25 by one.
16 by 25 by one.
That's what we see all day and it's like we see it on a two ton, we see it on a four ton, we see it on a five ton.
Everyone get why did they do that?
If you're in an up flow market It's what they stock.
It's what they stock and it's what fits on the side of the cabinet.
It's easy to install.
That's what they do.
But when you start measuring pressure drops, understand that that has a huge impact to the total external static pressure and fan airflow.
So we also look at improving the duct fittings near the equipment.
We look at, if you guys are familiar with Manual D or you look at the back of a lot of ductulators, you'll see duct fittings have equivalent lengths.
So very quickly we could analyze the duct fittings near the equipment.
If it has a high equivalent length, we want to try to replace that fitting for something with a much less equivalent length.
I always focus on the fittings where all of the airflow passes through for the entire system, so everything near the equipment.
You could figure this out by taking pressure drops across the fittings too, how much of an impact it has on the system.
Provide basic cleaning.
Sometimes you need to clean the evaporator coil, clean the blower wheel, make sure everything's in a clean, it's clean and in like new condition.
By the way, if you're plotting fan airflow, don't try to plot fan airflow if you have any kind of dirty components, right, like a blower wheel and that because it's not gonna be an accurate way of doing so.
You're gonna test and adjust the fan speed and then once you improve that fan airflow, you always wanna check and adjust the refrigerant charge because your charge is gonna be different based on any kind of airflow change.
Make sure it's dialed in after you make any kind of repair.
And then once again, you're gonna test out and prove that you improved the static pressure and the fan airflow.
Here's a couple other things you would do.
Add one oversized return duct grill to a large open area.
I'm gonna caution you guys.
You need to understand what you're doing within the building.
You can't just add returns anywhere.
You don't want to depressurize an area and create an unsafe environment and backdraft natural draft appliances.
You want to make sure that you're doing it in a thoughtful manner.
Replace three or six supply ducts with eight inch round.
Six inch supply ducts with eight inch round.
We're saying if you're doing this just to improve fan airflow or if you are trying to reduce static pressure, you also take into account a conversation with the homeowner.
You want to do that in areas where they maybe are uncomfortable.
So you're gonna add more airflow to areas where maybe they're not getting enough airflow.
Seal the duct system.
That's a big one.
The problem with sealing the duct system is you add static pressure to that system.
So you could do all of this.
We're paying attention to what's happening.
We're gonna plan for that.
So you're gonna look at once again, last year, I did a presentation on Fan Law two.
You could predict what the static pressure is gonna be when you make changes to the airflow in the system.
You take a systematic approach, and you're very methodical about anything you do.
If you are in an environment where you have a lot of flex duct, you wanna make sure it's all pulled tight and it's strapped accordingly.
All those pinch points add to that system, add restrictions.
Replace duct fittings and you could upgrade the grills and registers.
I found that a lot of times when you have the regular inexpensive stamped grills, they really restrict airflow substantially, and you can make quite a bit of a change by adding more of a high performance commercial style grill.
There's all different manufacturers and also making sure that you have the correct throw and spread.
Try to make sure you're mixing the air as much as you possibly can in that room.
Then you're not only affecting airflow, you're affecting and improving comfort.
Completing an air upgrade.
So this is kind of what you're gonna do.
You're gonna walk through, you plan it out, you execute it, adjust your refrigerant charge, and test out.
So when I say analyze, how do we analyze the pressure profile and the static pressure?
At NCI, we teach something which is called the static pressure budgets.
So for the longest time, when I was looking at these static pressure measurements, I would take the measurement, but I didn't really understand what they meant.
What is a bad number and what is a good number?
I know what the total external static is gonna be, but I don't know what the coil pressure drop or the filter pressure drop is supposed to be across the system.
So NCI created something called the static pressure budgets, and you could see it in the pie chart here.
They look a little bit different based on if you're working on a gas furnace or an air handler.
And all we're doing basically is breaking up the percentage of that total external static pressure.
Now think of budgets, like your budget, how much are you making on a monthly basis from your job?
Budgets are not set in stone, but they are finite.
You only have so much to work with.
So if you decide to buy yourself a nice new Corvette, if you're not making enough money, you might be living in a little apartment somewhere.
Same thing happens with this.
If you have a really high pressure drop on your filter, you need lower pressure in your ducts.
This is what it would look like as far as a gas furnace goes.
So when you measure this in, this is based on the data on that TrueFlow report.
So our return duct pressure, the column that I'm filling in is the measured.
What did I measure on that job?
So our return duct pressure is point one eight inches of water column.
I'm gonna compare that to my static pressure budget which is the next column on all the way on the right.
My budget is telling me I don't want to be anything higher than point one inches.
So right off the bat, the return duct has high static pressure.
I need to address the return.
Our filter pressure drop.
I'm allowed 0.1 inches on the filter side.
Well, my filter pressure drop that was measured is 0.33.
It's triple what my allowed budget is.
So that tells me I need to do something with that filter as well.
You look at the coil, it's a little bit high, it's not terrible, but it's a little over that budget.
So you can kinda see as you compare each one of these, you look for high numbers that don't align with that budget and That's where you start attacking first.
Attack the high numbers that don't align with your budget.
Basically, all measurements in this situation are too high.
So plan.
I mentioned Fan Law two.
I did the presentation last year.
You guys, I believe you all have access to that.
You could pull it up on HVAC school.
I think it's on YouTube in that, but this looks like a complicated formula.
If you guys how many of you guys have used Fan Law two?
A few of you guys?
Fan Law two is the most powerful thing that you could do to make sure that your systems are operating correctly when you're planning out and you're analyzing the system.
It's like having a crystal ball.
It's you're looking into the future.
The math looks scary, but when you break it down, it's really not that bad.
You could do it all by hand, or if you have a TrueFlow Grid, they have forecasting, which will do the math for you.
And this is what the TrueFlow Grid forecasting report looks like.
So this would be replacing that system and installing the correct size system for that individual house.
We had a three ton in there originally, and we wanna plan out what's gonna happen if I install a two ton system without touching anything.
So I'm gonna look at 800 CFM and it's a two ton system.
So we look at the forecasted report and if you look at our total external static pressure, it dropped to point four four.
I've been on Facebook and I've seen people post and there's so many people with gas furnaces where they say, it is impossible.
It is impossible to get a gas furnace to run at a half inch of water column or less.
I say, if you know what you're doing, hold my beer.
It's really not that difficult.
You just need to plan for it.
It's something that you need to pay attention to.
You can't just arbitrarily choose random evaporator coils and filters.
So step three, complete the air upgrade.
You're completing it, you're testing out or testing in, and then you test out.
This picture, this is actually an NCI contractor who makes these filters in his shop.
His name is Dave Cozzier.
These filters are amazing.
He installs them on the return drop, and he makes them in two different configurations, either an n configuration, which is three filters, or an m.
They have extremely low pressure drop.
There's all kinds of filters out there you could use, but you just need to plan for it.
That's Dave and there's a close-up of his cabinet.
And then you go back and you adjust the refrigerant charge.
You could do all this by hand or you could use MeasureQuick.
MeasureQuick is nice because you could generate a report and you could actually measure the BTUs and make sure it's performing the way it was designed.
So this is a test out of that same system, that two ton, eight sixty one CFM, and then our total external static pressure was point four five five.
Very, very close to the forecast to report in that TrueFlow Grid.
So in reality, you could see how close that math is.
You could really accurately plan for what will happen in the future if you spend the time and do it.
The problem is you need to take the time, take the measurements, and use them.
Now looking at another approach would be the duct optimization.
So this is more like a renovation.
We're looking at the entire duct system.
This would be we have comfort issues around the entire house.
We're trying to improve the entire duct system.
We want to actually take BTUs into account and make sure we have the right amount of airflow everywhere in the house.
So once again, some of the features, low pressure drop indoor coil, the filter, same thing.
A lot of these are the same.
Balancing dampers are big, so you could fix the ducts and you could still have comfort problems.
Do any of you guys air balance?
You guys air balance?
有的。
Yeah.
Air balancing is huge because you could have a perfect duct system, but one thing you gotta keep in mind is there's no duct system that is self balancing.
You need to have a method to balance the system, so you need the dampers.
Once the ducts are the correct size, we need to direct that airflow to the correct areas in the home.
Once again, seal the duct joints, high r value.
Insulated ducts are huge, especially in unconditioned space.
But I will tell you, by measuring delivered BTUs to each individual room, in the Midwest, our duct systems are inside of the house.
When I start, I'm like, we're not gonna be losing too much heat.
We're not gonna be losing too much cold air because our trunks are and all of our ducts are inside the conditioned space.
When I started doing the math and measuring the BTUs, you'd be surprised how much you lose in between the equipment and the registers.
So that's sealing the ducts and also insulate them.

So same thing, we have a process for this, and this would be system performance.
I'm throwing out a bunch of different things.
I'm plugging a lot of the NCI classes.
We have a residential system performance class, which teaches you guys how to actually measure the BTUs.
You could use MeasureQuick.
You could use a JobLink.
There's all different ways of doing it.
But basically, we're looking at the BTUs moving through the equipment, and we're comparing it to the BTUs delivered at the registers.
How much are we losing in between?
Okay.
We're gonna plan for that and figure out what we're gonna do because of it.
And BTUs are not the only thing.
It's delivered airflow as well.
So everyone thinks if you have low airflow, that's one thing.
You could have the correct airflow and low BTUs because of gains through the ductwork.
Analyze the losses, and here's a picture of Joe's gonna be happy about this.
I've mentioned MeasureQuick how many times in this?
Seven every time.
Thank you.
But, yeah, NCI has a new workflow, newer, and we just released the heating workflow.
我们有ComfortMax。
We have ComfortMax.
So ComfortMax does exactly what I was just talking about is looking at BTUs and looking at the entire system, and we give you a grading scale.
We look at the equipment performance and the system performance, and you can generate a PDF to show the homeowner and show them what's going on.
You also have a contractor report that you look at and basically itemize and zero in on where all the issues are in the duct system.
This is a non refrigerant report which is a lower level technician for this.
是的。
Yeah.
Super easy to do.
Once you do it a couple times, there's really not a lot to it.
It's even easier if you use the TrueFlow Grid.
You don't have to.
You could actually key in the airflow if you're plotting fan airflow.
But very nice report because you could show them the difference between the equipment and the system.
So step two, analyze the existing duct system.
So you can go through.
If you have an existing system, you could look at if you run a Manual J report, can go through and actually run a Manual D to figure out redesign the whole house and start from scratch.
Or another method you could do is use the NCI duct tables and you could look at how much airflow each individual run has.
You can quickly count up the different supply runs and figure out what size run you should have to each room.
We have specific guidance.
We have training on that.
Different way to doing it and we're looking at specific areas in the duct system.
So we're not replacing everything.
All we're doing is zeroing in on certain areas.
We're keeping as much as we can, the areas that work, and we're only replacing the sections of duct that we have issues with.
This is complete the work.
It's funny this picture.
It was like a Sunday I was bored, and I decided to rip out all the ductwork in my house.
是的。
Yeah.
It was a graduated trunk system.
You guys ever seen one of those?
That's like when the sheet metal masters were around.
They made every single fitting.
It was amazing.
There's no round pipe in the entire duct system, but it wasn't really designed for cooling.
Right?
And we're there it's a different type of duct system.
I had uncomfortable rooms in my house, and I decided I wanna make this better.
So I just ripped everything out.
I pissed off my wife, but it all worked out in the end.
And then we're gonna look at once we replace that duct system or once we change the items that would need to be changed in that duct system, we want to air balance the system.
We want to take a flow hood and we want to actually measure the delivered airflow.
We're going to adjust every single damper in that system to make sure we have the correct amount of airflow at each one of those rooms.
We're also going to measure the BTUs to make sure that we're delivering the amount of heat or cooling to each one of the rooms in that design.
Once again, we go back and we adjust our refrigerant charge to make sure it's correct once we improve that fan airflow and test out to prove performance.
Ultimate obstacles.
What do we run into?
Willingness to participate.
Willingness to participate.
That's a big one.
I think a big thing is technicians.
Do people want to do this?
It's not easy.
It's not easy to fix ductwork.
It's not easy to fix airflow problems a lot.
I got into the habit where I tried to make all my metal look really nice, and I took pride, and I thought that I was the best there was.
Like, I'm one of the best in Chicago.
Nobody's better than me.
Until I started measuring and testing my systems, I'm like, man, I suck.
But when you start paying attention to it, I was probably 20, 21 years old, and there's a lot of big houses in my area.
And the 2nd Floor master bedrooms were always an issue.
Bedrooms over a garage were always an issue.
And homeowners would ask me, how do I fix that?
And my answer was always, the ducts are in the walls.
It is what it is.
We could install a mini split.
That's not always the case.
You could fix a lot of systems if you put some effort into it.
Get your guys on board on your team and put some effort into it, and you could fix these problems.
I know Kiefer upfront, I'm gonna embarrass him a little bit, but he's like a star NCI student.
He's posting all the time and he does great work and you do air upgrades all the time.
Amazing.
He's putting in big return drops.
For you guys down south return drops, it's when we have a furnace in a basement.
And a basement is like part of the house underground.
So you need to own the proper tools to do this stuff.
We need the testing tools to actually measure and figure out what's wrong and to prove that we fixed it.
We need to make sure our systems are clean.
We need to be able to access the ducts.
And that's another thing.
When I said that a lot of homeowners, the ducts are in the walls and I can't fix it because they're in the walls.
There's a lot of things you could do and you don't have to rip open the walls, right?
And one other thing to keep in mind, drywall is cheap.
That's an intimidating thing for a lot of homeowners.
They don't want you to rip anything open.
It took me years to do so, but I made relationships with drywall contractors and I started offering turnkey solutions.
I'm gonna have to open up this wall, but I'm gonna make sure that this wall gets closed with drywall, and it will be primed when it's done.
You just have to paint.
That's a lot less intimidating than leaving a wall open for a homeowner.
It's a little bit more you need to find somebody that does good work, but it's easier to sell jobs if you have a turnkey solution.
Another thing that's big, especially in attic systems and that, is space to work.
I know I just visited Austin, Texas a couple months ago, and their complaint was, Our attics are small.
We can't get to a lot of these ducts.
So the thing is you need to come up with a plan and work with what you can access.
Right?
Do the best you can with what you have to work with.
The last thing is having the know how.
Understanding what you're doing and what you change, what it's going to impact on the entire system.
And that's all I got.
Thank you, guys.
You have as many questions?
Comments?
Thank you.
Why do people think It's always gotta be you with a question.
We'll just take it.
Okay?
So Yeah.
Why is it so hard?
It seems like these are things that are, like, impossible task for so many Airflow is invisible.
Airflow
Airflow is invisible, and it's not something that you can't see it.
You can sometimes feel it, but it's like everyone uses their handometer.
How many times have you probably gotten a call and somebody, how was the airflow?
The airflow is good.
I used my handometer.
TEC has a sticker.
Airflow is not good.
It's measured.
You need to make sure that you're able to measure the different aspects of a system.
You're you're my guys.
Why
use a lot of people to measure the airflow system?
There's so many obstacles.
It's it's nothing.
We're all doing it.
没错。
Right.
What are the hurdles?
I gave you a list of them.
It's knowledge.
It's tools.
It's It's not changing.
So I'm not
saying, you can make pot and cold without measuring.
没错。
Right.
True.
是的。
Yep.
I'll give Ed props.
Ed is several years ago, I took training in DC with Ed, and he told me a story about how he thought he was the best around too.
Right?
And his duct systems that they were installing, they were the best of the best.
And they eventually bought a flow hood and they started measuring the delivered CFM at different registers.
And you said, you look at the flow hood, you look at the number on it, you shake it, and you're like, this thing's a piece of junk.
It's broken.
It's not the right amount of airflow coming out of this register, but the thing is having the know how and actually having the correct tools so you're measuring them.
And I think everyone has that moment in their lives where they realize and you're knocked down, I am good at what I do, and the more you learn, the more you understand that you have to learn.
Right?
Thank you, guys.
