This is the HVAC School podcast.
I'm Brian.
This is a short episode that comes from the Bry-X stage at the twenty twenty six seventh annual symposium, 2026 this year, earlier this year, in good old bright and sunshiny Ocoee, Florida, right down the street from our offices.
And this presentation was done by Andy Holt.
So, again, the Bry-X stage was just our it was kinda like TEDx.
Right?
So they're, like, shorter presentations, quick hits, and Andy Holt always brings it.
He always talks about communication and how to be a better technician through communication, and this episode is no different.
The title of this presentation is Communication Might Be Your Best Tool, and as always, appreciate Andy.
Appreciate everybody who comes to the symposium, all of our speakers, sponsors, and especially special shout out to True Tech Tools for being our title sponsor and really the one who makes this thing happen.
好了。
There we go.
Andy Holt talking about how communications might be your best tool right after you hear from our great sponsors.
Refrigeration Technologies and their Viper Aerosol Coil Cleaner for condensers and evaporators.
If you don't know, the Viper aerosol cleaner is a foaming cleaner that you can spray into a coil with its really powerful pin spray.
It has a strong degreasing capability in a convenient package.
It's safe to use with rinsing or no rinse, so there's zero need to bring a bulky pump sprayer into the house for an evaporator coil cleaning or in many refrigeration applications.
And like we mentioned, it works on evaporators and condensers.

Santa Fe Dehumidifiers and the all new Ultra V155 Whole Home Dehumidifier.
The V155 is 40% smaller than the previous model, allowing you to install it in even tighter spaces.
Like Santa Fe's other ventilating dehumidifiers, the V155 features an eight inch ventilation duct allowing you to use it to meet fresh air requirements.
The V155 has a powerful fan and makes it easy to align the CFM ventilation rates with the dehumidifier's capacity.
This helps you size the dehumidifier correctly for the size of the structure and load you're working with, typically up to 3,500 square feet.
Even better, they have their total peace of mind six year warranty.
Five years for full replacement and an extra year for parts.

Good morning, everybody.
Andy Holt here with twenty minutes.
I usually it takes twenty minutes to introduce myself, so I'm gonna get right to it.
Thanks for coming, by the way.
How many of y'all is your first time at Symposium?
First time.
Couple of y'all.
Hope you're enjoying it.
I teach.
I'm the crazy guy with the tent.
I take technicians camping in the woods for two days, and we talk all things communications.
So that's what I'm up to out of Columbus, Georgia.
Third generation company or person.
Anyway, the first thing I want you to understand is we're not in the HVAC business, we're in the people business, just happened to turn wrenches on air conditioning.
Foundationally, that's a good mindset, good place to be.
Keep that in mind.
But anyways, deal with the basics first, your mindset.
When I deal with technicians that have a hard time with customers, often it's their own mannerisms that are causing some issues.
So what I want you to do is to own those, but be aware that people perceive you based on what you're giving them.
If it's always all those people, they don't get along with me, blah, blah, blah.
They always seem you're the center of attention of all the conflict.
Generally, if it's with this guy, this guy, this guy, you're the common denominator.
So watch that.
Take ownership of your style, how you communicate.
It's not the words we say, it's kind of how we do it.
So you've heard that it's not what you said, it's how you said it.
There's a lot to that.
And again, being this short on time, it's really tough on me to do some of this stuff real slow and just bullet point.
But anyway, we'll do it.
Take ownership of your style and be open to making modifications if necessary.
One thing that I will suggest to you is have a flow or a plan when you're greeting a customer, when you're presenting an invoice, when you're talking about service options.
If you're in sales, you know, of course, always give options.
But have a plan for how to greet the customer and what the agenda is going to be, and that will really, really help you.
And I hope you have a process.
Open ended question, what's your process?
We don't have time to get into that, but have a process for everything you do, greeting, everything else.
Be cognizant of your mindset when you're meeting new people.
Some people believe it or not, I've had people in my classes say, this would be a great business if it wasn't for the people.
And it's like, okay.
But I have to work with that sometimes too.
But anyway, your mindset, body language, again, that's so much I could go into on all these things.
I'm just hitting the highlights.
Do you ever get anxious or uncomfortable when talking in front of a customer?
I do a lot of technicians that are just they'd say, well, gosh, Andy, I've only got one year in the business.
People ask me how long, especially young techs.
They say, well, how long you've been doing this?
Well, if you've been in this industry one year, you've got about two thousand hours.
And which sounds better?
I've been in it a year or I've got about two thousand hours so far.
Teach your young guys to maybe look at stuff like that.
How do you want your customers to perceive you?
Right?
You want them to stand on every word you say, you want them to have smart questions, and not nothing you can't handle.
But anyway, but how do you want the customer to perceive you?
The second question is, do you even care?
Because I do deal with people like, hey, whatever that lady's or whatever she is, and I'm who I am.
And that's what happened.
Rather than saying I took ownership of this, I saw they had this kind of personality, I adjusted a little bit, we got along better.
I think everybody has a story like that.
So you be the one that adjust because have you ever heard the phrase, I give respect when I get respect?
Anybody ever seen that one?
I respect you after you respect me.
Well, what happens if you meet somebody just like you?
It's like you're at a loggerhead, you know, it's like, well, respect you when you respect me.
Well, feel the same way.
So therefore, neither one of us are gonna do it.
Somebody's gotta be first.
Again, high level stuff here, verbal and nonverbal communications.
You know how important those are?
I've got three daughters.
I could say, Quincy, come here.
Right?
Quincy, come here.
Or I could say Quincy, come here.
Same words, completely different meaning.
So the body language, nonverbal communications or things like if a customer's talking to you and you're rolling your eyes up, what message are we given?
Some of y'all give, we're told to give good eye contact with some of y'all freak me out with your eye contact.
It's like you don't even blink.
So stay away from that too.
Know Andy told me to have good eye contact.
I go you're freaking me out.
Blink, look away, have a gaze.
It is, it does.
Course again, basics verbal communications are spoken words, nonverbal communication, body language, gestures and again, I could spend an hour at least on that subject alone.
Be friendly, kind, and helpful to everyone and you connect with them faster.
No news there.
My point is be the first one to be friendly.
Be the first one to give eye contact.
Be the first one to offer your hand.
You be the first one.
Don't wait because you might meet somebody again.
Well, I don't want to give them respect until I give respect.
Well, showing people kindness and things like that is a form of respect.
Holding your tongue sometimes is a form of respect.
I know what I could say to you, but I'm not.
This is the biggest thing I see is the only thing underlying there is smile.
You cannot believe the power of a smile with the new greeting with a customer.
And I'm not talking about the Garfield, know, Andy told me to smile and you're looking at his big grill.
That's not what I'm talking about.
You want to have a smile that's natural to you, good eye contact, but not staring and listening, good listening and smile and give great eye contact with all interactions, all interactions with your customer.
Because in twenty or thirty minutes, from the time you greet them, you may be talking to them about something pretty catastrophic with their system.
And you might go, man, don't get to flip a system or something like that.
Well, that's not the time to comb your hair and brush your teeth after to prepare for that second meeting, you should have been that person to begin with.
So be consistent.
But how you handle that initial greeting has a huge impact on the rest of the interactions and I'm going to give you some proof on that.
You have choices, right?
If you just look at that, say well and I'm not saying Bud Light or Bud, you know, I'm not saying what choice of beer, I'm not saying how much butt crack you should show.
Nothing like that.
But you decide.
Are there some judgments that could be made with these pictures from a customer?
Was it fair if some guys say, well, it's not fair, Andy, that they judge me.
I said, okay.
很好。
Great.
Welcome to Realville.
People are gonna judge you.
They don't even know you.
They don't know how nice I am.
Well, they don't.
But you freaked them out how you dressed.
You looked unprofessional.
Oil in the driveway was not good, that kind of thing.
So anyway, my point is on that slide is your choices make a difference, not just how we're dressed, how we communicate, how we look, all that matters, every bit of it.
Ron Smith taught me this years ago, I put it in a little different wording, but customers never compliment your technical skills, only how you made them feel while you're in their presence.
And I've been coming to this conference for years, you guys are head over the eyes serious about being technical.
I love that.
I support that 100%.
But if we take a measure quick vital not the vitals report, but the detailed report and try to go over every line with the customer, let me go over every one of this with you.
You realize that's a bad idea.
Right?
Too technical.
Too much information.
We can drown ourselves by drinking too much water that we have to have.
Too much of a good thing.
Now what I did was I just went online and grabbed a few different companies and some of the comments from the customers.
First one here, I think you all know these guys.
They use Kalos a few times.
They upgraded and maintained several of our commercial and residential buildings each and every time they operate with amazing efficiency and customer service.
What did they say about the Navac probes?
What did they say about your two thirty eight micron vacuum?
Do you ever get letters like I'm serious?
Has anybody ever got a letter that says wow, that meter guy was using blew me away?
Can't believe you use that new stuff.
They don't go that way.
And I'm not trying to make a joke.
I'm just again trying to bring in to Realville.
There's another company, Mission Critical's HVAC.
It's a local company I recommend.
I've been with them for four years, never been disappointed with the quality.
And what I highlighted this one because they dropped the text names.
Clinton、Willie、Dustin
Clinton, Willie, Dustin provide great customer care.
Great customer care.
John and his crew at Honest Heating were very professional and efficient.
Everything was well explained and answered all our questions and concerns.
They went above and beyond, making sure everything was done right and well, very conscious of customer satisfaction.
Here's another one.
I called on Saturday and they came within an hour.
Kyle
Kyle did a great job, explained everything they did, highly recommend.
We'll definitely use Innovative Air again.
And again, mentioning the tech's name is to me critical when they do that.
Company out of Virginia here I know says the best HVAC team I've seen my whole life.
Did you like reading that when you saw that?
That was really cool.
Was this the first time you're seeing this?
I got it off your website last night.
Thanks for the mention.
I got a tip jar.
But anyway, these reviews demonstrate that people respond when they're happy.
They can respond two ways.
Right?
That could have easily I could have said give me the one star reviews because we all have them.
Not everybody thinks you hung the moon.
Something that my granddad taught me years ago.
I'm, again, third generation air conditioning guy.
We started in 1956.
I started in 1978 but it's not enough just to fix a unit, must fix the customer first and you guys that aren't people people you're like oh man, you're a kid, what do you want me to be Doctor.
Phil?
No, But you can get better at it.
You can get better at reading people.
You can get better with your responses.
So pretty much that's what I say.
I do, again, teach technicians these and more skills at my two day class.
It's in West Georgia.
I've got it coming up.
My next class is March twenty fourth and twenty fifth.
It's in LaGrange, Georgia.
If you're interested at all, don't hesitate to call me and get signed up.
We always sell out.
We only allow 12 people per class.
So I like small classes.
I like the closeness of that, and nobody not talks, if that's the way to say that.
Everybody's engaged.
But anyway, bye bye.
Thank you for coming.
Have a great rest of the day.
We may have time for a few extra questions at the end.
Oh, I love that.
Any questions?
So at your training, I heard a rumor that you have to sleep in your tent.
Is that true?
We've been doing the sleeping in tents for eighteen years.
This is not a new thing.
It's something I've been doing for eighteen.
This is my eighteenth season doing that.
We do it in spring and the fall.
But yeah, everybody shows up with I brought a tent.
I've got 14 of those out there.
There's a cot in there, mattress, cell phone charger.
If it's above 75, I'll throw a fan in your tent too as well, but you're all by yourself in those tents.
Thanks for that question.
What kind of food do you serve?

Motorcycle driving soup.

You know, the thing is about the food, one of the reasons we do that is and all of y'all have had this you've had a great event or whatever, some kind of something around a real special meal, and the meal will remind you of that special event.
So that's the reason we do it.
Anything else?
Thanks for coming.
Have a great day.
