Thanks for joining me today.
This is podcast number five twenty seven, and I think I'm going to call it effectiveness versus efficiency.
People like me, we, as a people, who are those who struggle with clutter, those who struggle with procrastination, tend to be obsessed with the idea of efficiency.
Now, here's where it becomes clear in case this happens to be your very first time to ever listen to my podcast.
It becomes clear that I am speaking.
As a struggler to other strugglers.
As a procrastinator to other procrastinators, I am not the person who homemaking decluttering organizing is super easy to me.
So And I just want to share how easy it is with the rest of the world.
No, I talk about this stuff because it is my own struggle.
Have had to literally dig my way out of.
I have had to work through my own stuff.
And so I'm speaking as a struggle or two struggles, not as a person who has it all together.
And I'm I'm here for the struggleers.
I'm not here for I mean, you can listen, that's fine, but I am not here for the people who.
I'm not saying I'm not here for the people who want to help a Struggler, but for the people who are just like, what is wrong with people who have this issue?
I'm not here for that.
好的。
Okay.
Because here's the thing.
If I was someone who had it all together.
Looking at a.
Person who struggled to keep their home under control and I don't just mean like, oh, it's a little messy a lot of the times.
No.
I mean, my house was a disaster.
And I know that's the experience of so many of you.
I know that looking on as someone who doesn't struggle with that.
I would not see if I was someone who didn't struggle with it.
I would not see looking on that the person I was looking at whose house was was a disaster was obsessed with efficiency.
Like that would never cross my mind.
If I was a non procrastinator, which I'll be honest, I really think everybody has certain things they procrastinate on.
But if I was a non procrastinator in a certain area and I was looking on at someone else who procrastinated in something that I didn't procrastinate in, I would not cross my mind that their issue was their obsession with efficiency.
And therefore.
That's where a lot of the communication problems come in.
When the Struggler, when we try to explain to a non Struggler things either what we think has gotten us this way or why what they're saying won't work or whatever.
And we're trying to explain things.
I'm not even saying defend, but just explain things to the nonstruggler.
And we start talking about what would be most efficient.
That's where the nonstruggler makes the face.
The face.
You know what I mean?
Like, their eyes are kind of like eyebrows are up and eyes are like, what?
什么?
What?
Why why are you obsessed with efficiency when what you actually need to do is throw away trash?
Anyway, our obsession with efficiency often backfires, causing disastrous homes, causing us to get stuck in this feeling of being overwhelmed, in looking at the big problem.
So our obsession with efficiency is often the thing causing us to not get started.
So what I want to talk about today is the difference between effectiveness and efficiency and how you have they have to go together.
Like when I find myself spinning out going down that road in my brain of this doesn't feel like the most efficient way to do this.
I don't I have to switch it and say I can't I'm not good at knowing what's efficient.
What I need to be doing is saying what is effective.
Okay, because no process no method is actually efficient.
If it isn't effective.
And that's the problem that I found myself in when I was completely overwhelmed in my home.
I was obsessed with figuring out exactly how things were going to go.
And which things I could do and not do.
To streamline the process so that I didn't waste any time or energy.
I was obsessed with that before I actually did anything, which meant.
That I was making up a process.
That was not tested anywhere along the way, and it was based on things I didn't actually know because I had actually done the thing.
And then I would try to execute these processes if I ever got to that point, because I was usually so overwhelmed just by the processes that I had written down.
In my big old to do list of how I'm going to tackle this big thing, this big pile of clutter, this my entire house, whatever.
Can't tell you how many emails I get from people that I relate because I would have written the same exact email at some point in my life.
These emails that say, okay, so I've made this big plan.
For how I'm going to get my house organized and I want to do it by this day.
Do you think this is going to work?
I hear that from people a lot.
And I'm like, I can't know.
You can't know.
Until you actually bring it into reality.
Effectiveness only happens in reality.
Effectiveness can only be evaluated in reality.
计划。
A plan.
To be efficient is usually the least efficient thing.
So, you know, I have my new book coming out, Procrastinators Get Stuff Done, and in it, I have a five step no mess.
什么?
What?
大家。
Y'all.
好。
Okay.
And in it, I have a five step anti procrastination process.
And this process is to be can be applied to anything, any situation where you find yourself overwhelmed and procrastinating.
It's based on the things I've learned dealing with overwhelming piles of clutter.
Okay, but I have taken those things and put them into a process that works for anything.
Step four of the five step process is to make a plan.
Not step one.
You know, I've talked to several people who've read through the book, you know, we're talking about their procrastination situation without fail.
They have spent a lot of time thinking through a plan.
But they've never actually gotten started.
So step four of my anti procrastination process is make the plan.
It is not step one.
It is actually not efficient to make a plan before you've actually done anything.
Well, that's a lot of actually.
Is not actually efficient to make a plan before you've actually done anything, actually.
Because you're making a plan based on something you don't fully understand.
You're making a plan.
To do things.
That you already know to do that you could already do.
And make the overall thing that is overwhelming legitimately so much smaller before you ever make a plan.
So here's what I mean.
Let's talk about effectiveness versus efficiency.
那么。
So.
Efficiency often comes down to I don't want to waste my time and effort on something that ab that I don't absolutely have to waste time and effort on.
And then when we don't actually know because we aren't in there doing the thing.
It feels like which steps can I skip?
Y'all know I'm a Seinfeld person if you've been here a long time.
So you know which episode I'm thinking of.
The Step Skippers.
And it's this episode where this guy is out making amends.
He's in the 12 step program, and he's apologizing to different people, but he never apologizes to George for something that George thinks he should be apologized to for.
And so he calls him a step skipper.
And then it's just chaos ensues, and there's not really a lot to take from it to learn from, but it's just what it makes me think of.
But the point is.
You have to do the steps in order.
And the desire is to skip steps.
And sometimes when we make a plan first before we actually do the first three steps of my anti procrastination process.
When we start with this big, elaborate plan.
We're both trying to skip steps, trying to find steps to skip, but we're also adding steps at the same time.
And so it becomes this big Jumble because we're not actually in there doing the thing.
好。
Okay.
So what is the definition of efficiency?
Well, according to looking it up online, you know, just the automatic thing that came up, efficiency means producing a desired result or doing work with the least amount of waste, expense, effort, or time.
This is the reason so many people don't wanna take it there now.
So if you're new, welcome, and you're still here.
If you're new, my no mess decluttering process, it's five steps.

Also, decluttering at the speed of life is where you'll actually learn the steps and how to apply them all over your house.
It's my book that has sold 500,000 copies, but whatever.
Anyway, no that mess decluttering process is like the whole core of it.
The way to declutter without making a bigger mess is to take it there now, whether taking it there now means putting trash straight in the trash or the recycling, whether it means taking things to its home, either already established home or newly established home according to where you would look for it first or sticking something in donate box.
Okay?
So like it's everything goes to its final destination immediately.
And yet in the name of efficiency.
People want to skip that step because it does not feel efficient.
However, when we look at the definition of efficiency, what do we find?
Let's read it again, everybody.
Efficiency means producing a desired result or doing work with the least amount of waste, expense, effort, or time.
So what happens when you skip the step of take it there now?
Well, I believe in my experience and in the experience of literally thousands of you who have emailed me and said I resisted it forever.
I didn't want to do it.
It felt so inefficient or some version of that.
And then I finally did it and realized this is the only way.
好的。
Okay.
The reason that we don't want to take it there now is we feel like it's wasting time.
And I don't want to waste my effort.
It's not efficient.
It's wasting effort.
It's wasting time.
But once I started taking it there now.
I was no longer wasting time.
Because what's the reality of wasting time when you're decluttering?
It's going through the act of looking through your stuff and putting it in piles and setting it aside and and deciding what you're going to do.
And then life happens because life is always going to happen and you get called away from that space or you just shut down and you go, I can't do any more right now and you step away and then you come back and you don't remember what it was that you had decided before.
You don't remember where it was that these things were going to go and you were going to efficiently deliver them to their homes.
And then you have to go back and go through the exact same process again.
This item that yesterday I asked myself if I needed water bottle.
Where would I look first for a water bottle?
And then I set it aside because I was like, oh, yeah, I know where I'll look for for that because I know the answer to that question.
And now today I'm going.
I don't remember what I said yesterday.
Are there going be days where I remember sure?
Are there going to be plenty of times where I have no idea?
Because I'm in a different state of mind.
Yeah, there's gonna be plenty of times.
Are there going to be plenty of times where I don't even notice this pile of water bottles and other things until it's been a month.
And now they're this big jumble with other stuff added in.
So I can't guarantee that I'm going to remember and actually do it efficiently unless I go ahead and do it in the moment when I'm thinking of it.
If I go ahead and take it there now, it's done.
I have used some steps.
I have used some energy to get it from here, this place I'm working to this place where I would look for it.
I have taken it there now.
I have used some energy for sure.
But also, I know for a fact that is not wasted energy.
Why?
Because it's done.
There is no if or, oh, I've got to remember or, oh, I've got to finish this thing or I've got to come back to this or I've got don't forget, don't forget, don't forget what you're thinking you're going to do with this item.
None of that is wasted.
My walk from where I am to that place where I'm taking it there now as long as I'm taking it now meow.
I know some y'all think I say meow.
I think I say now whatever anyway, I take it there now that is not wasted.
I may not have enjoyed it.
I may have grumbled the entire way.
But because the item is in its home, it's not wasted.
But if I put it in a pile, I am risking.
That effort being wasted, the mental effort.
The physical effort of pulling it out and putting it in the pile, the mental effort of deciding what I'm going to do with this item.
I am at a very I am risking no matter who you are.
I am risking that being wasted effort because I may have to stop.
I may get called away.
I may not remember when I come back for me and my own personality.
It's a very high risk.
But for everybody, if I will take it there now.
That is effective.
And so really saying, okay, my obsession with efficiency.
Tends to backfire.
So when I find myself not doing something in the name of efficiency, because there's got to be an easier way that I'll figure out in the future.
There's got to be a better whatever all of that.
I have to switch it in my head and say, wait, this is a backfire for me.
My obsession with efficiency is something that backfires.
So what I need to do is say, this is this thing that I'm either doing or not doing right now?
Is it effective?
Because if it's not effective, it's not efficient.
If my desired result so this that was part of the definition.
Efficiency means producing a desired result or doing work with the least amount of waste expense effort or time.
If my desired result is to have a home that's under control, And I am decluttering.
And I say I don't have time to make a real decision about this item.
I don't know what I want to do with this item.
And so I stick it somewhere either in a keep box or I stick it in a different room of, you know, stuff I'm going to deal with and figure out later.
I'm not getting my desired result because I'm I'm stuff shifting.
My house is no more under control, because even though this part of my house is more under control now, another part of my house is less under control.
So it's evening out unless I'm actually getting stuff out of my house.
And so I'm looking at this desired result.
Am I achieving the desired result or not?
Is my house getting more under control by what I'm doing with this item?
If I'm stuff shifting, the answer is no, I'm not.
So therefore.
Not making a final decision and acting on the final decision.
Is inefficient.
Because it's not effective pulling everything out.
哦。
Oh.
And I think this is one of those things that it's important to acknowledge.
Why do why does it feel right to pull everything out of a space to declutter?
It feels right because it feels more efficient.
Because the actual pulling everything out is so much faster than going item by item.
Except that if I pull everything out.
I still have a pile.
I still have a big jumble of stuff.
It's just not in the space that I was working in before.
It's now outside of that space.
It's spread all over the floor or the countertops or whatever.
So I was making faster movements by just being like, Okay, good.
I'm just going to pull everything out that felt fast in the moment.
But it didn't actually accomplish anything.
Like no decisions were made.
All I did was move the stuff from the the space that it was in.
To a different space so that that space could be empty.
And I get it.
I get that the idea in the perfect world is that I'm going to put the things back that deserve to be there, and then everything else needs to go.
That does not work well for people like me who are like, oh, so this clearly doesn't need to be here, but I can't possibly just get rid of it.
And so my process works better for that, right?
For those of us who struggle with those things.
But faster does not necessarily mean more efficient.
I got to go fast at this.
I got to I have to, you know.
Well, I mean, it's like, you know, my husband in episode 500 when he was talking about when he got rid of all those muscle magazines and he that's his one decluttering regret.
Well, it was in a time way before I'd ever come up with the no mess decluttering process where we were just desperate and we were moving and it was like, here is this big fine.
Just throw them all away.
And he just did.
And now that's his regret.
It felt faster in the moment, but.
If that regret.
Which this is what happens for a lot of people, if that regret causes us to then be scared to declutter in the future.
To go, oh, no, I have so many regrets over that, so I'm just going to not declutter, that's backfiring.
That's not effective decluttering, it's therefore not efficient.
Okay, so just because it feels faster to do this thing, if it doesn't actually produce real, if it's not effective decluttering, if it ends up pulling everything out of a space is a guaranteed backfire for me.
It's a guaranteed thing to cause me to feel overwhelmed and shut down.
It is a guaranteed thing to make me step away sooner than I even would before because I am so overwhelmed.
Oh, looks great when it's empty.
All these things I'm enough to make a decision about.
And now they are a worse mess than it was before because it used to be shoved inside of a cabinet.
Okay, so it's the opposite of effective.
Therefore, it is not efficient.
Making piles feels faster.
That I mean, that's like my standard thing I've always talked about, right?
Is the this this was the reality for me.
I was like, oh, I'm going to make all these piles and then I will put everything away at once.
And that makes so much more sense.
The reality is for me and for so many of you.
When I had to step away, those piles turned into things that were now more overwhelming than they were before.
That is the opposite of Effectiveness.
If I'm feeling more overwhelmed because of the way that I'm decluttering.
That is not efficient, even though maybe I'm the way I'm decluttering is in the name of efficiency, but that's backfiring because it's not effective.
It is so irritating to take it there now.
It is so irritating to go one item at a time.
It feels so much slower.
And yet because I do that, I make real legitimate progress.
And I hear the same thing from so many of you.
So my encouragement to you is to experiment with it to try it to see.
How it works say, okay, if I was going to spend thirty minutes here and that thirty minutes if I was going to do it the traditional way of like pulling everything out the pulling everything out.
I don't know.
This is me guessing, which is not a great thing for time, my time awareness, but like pulling everything out that might take me three minutes and then going through everything and blah, blah, blah.
And then, you know, there's no way I'm going do that in thirty minutes.
But if I say I'm going to take that same thirty minutes and I'm going to use the no mess process and I'm going to pull out trash for five minutes and then that trash is done.
And if I stop at five minutes, I've made progress.
And then I'm going to see if there's anything in here that I do know what to do with.
That's easy stuff.
Is there anything I could just go ahead and donate?
好的。
All right.
And then I'm going to ask myself the question and I may only get through three things where I say if I needed this item, where would I look for it first?
But even if I do that, I will have made more legitimate effective progress on this space than I ever did when I was obsessed with being efficient.
好。
Okay.
Which means that the other way was not actually efficient.
Faster is only more efficient if it's effective, if it actually achieves the result.
I'm just going to say this.
好。
Okay.
I don't know.
I hesitate to say this, but I will because I you need to hear it.
If you're listening to me and you're still here twenty something minutes later.
I get asked a lot about keep boxes, you know, just set it aside because I'm not sure Time will tell boxes.
Like, I'll just see if I end up needing this.
And toy rotation, a lot of people love, you know, the idea of toy rotation.
I tried toy rotation before I ever started this deslobification process.
I tried it.
But a lot of times.
Those are.
Procrastination boxes.
They're just.
Procrastination.
For me to put something into a box saying, I'm not sure what I want to do with this.
I'm going to stick it in a box instead of asking where would I look for it first and giving it a real home there, maybe getting rid of something else to make room for it in that home.
It feels like I'm doing something because I've moved it out of this space into another space.
But again, it's still in my house.
Again, it still doesn't have a home.
I have delayed making this decision.
I feel justified because I called it a keep box or I called it a time hotel box.
But the reality is.
It's not effective for me because I keep boxes just sit in my garage.
I have gone through so many keep boxes over the years of things that I stuck in a keep box twenty years before or ten years before.
To the point where I now know they don't work for me, but they feel so appealing.
Why?
Because it feels like it's efficient, because it feels like I'm going to get this done faster, except that I'm not because that thing is still in my house and now it's in some random box somewhere.
And maybe I have a maybe I have it labeled and all that kind stuff, but it's still in a box somewhere.
And my house is not getting easier to manage because.
That stuff is still there.
I still have more stuff than I can handle.
And so so it comes down to does it work for you?
I get that the idea of toy rotation and the idea of a keep box and the idea of time will tell is all this stuff that's like, yes, that sounds like a great idea.
Because it feels like making the decision, stopping to make a real legitimate decision.
Feels like I'm wasting time.
Why?
Because making a decision is hard and making a decision makes me feel overwhelmed and it makes me just feel stuck.
So if I can just go ahead and move it over here and not make a decision that feels more efficient because I've moved it except that if I've moved it and it didn't actually go to a real home, I haven't decluttered it.
And so therefore, this is not effective.
Therefore, it's not efficient.
Okay, so taking that out and saying I have to do how do you know if keep boxes are efficient for you?
Go look in whatever space where you would put a keep box and see how many are there and how many have been there for a while.
That's how, you know, it's actually pretty easy.
Go and look at that space.
And say, yeah, this is where I put keep boxes and go and look and say, oh, there's stuff in boxes that has been there for years.
It feels more efficient.
It is not more efficient because it is not more effective.
Because if it's just going to sit in a box for the next twenty years.
That's not efficient.
Because your house isn't actually getting any better.
So how do you do this?
好的。
Okay.
所以,在我的反拖延流程和新书里,你可以去 danak.white.com/procrastinate 看看。
So in my anti procrastination process and my new book, you can go to danak.white.com/procrastinate.
There is if you're listening to this in real time, you are going to hear at the end of this podcast.
If you're watching on YouTube, you can click the link in the description of the video.
But you're going to hear like all the ins and outs of how to preorder and how to claim preorder bonuses and why preorders matter so much and all that.
But I have this book about procrastination coming out.
Well, what does it look like to face an overwhelming situation and actually be efficient?
Well, we're going to talk about Effectiveness.
Okay, so we're going to break it down into small steps.
And I know that you've heard a million times.
Just do the next small thing.
很好。
Great.
But I have created an anti procrastination process for myself to use and that others are starting to use.
And I hope you will use when you read the book.
But this process tells you what are those small steps?
Okay, and the first three steps are look.
Noncommittal look, I'm not going to do anything with it.
I'm going to count looking as a legitimate step because if I haven't even looked, I definitely haven't started.
But once I look, it's strange how my brain starts to go.
Oh, Okay, looking is a legitimate step.
It is efficient and effective to look.
If I am making a plan before I've ever actually looked at the problem head on face on looked at my own situation, how I can actually deal with this.
I can't be efficient because I can't be effective because I don't actually know what the problem is.
Okay, so I can go ahead and look before I ever make a plan.
Step two, do the easy stuff, do the stuff I already know to do.
I'm going to get that done.
Not putting it on a plan, but actually going ahead and doing it.
Step three, non committal experimentation.
I've been talking about that, I think in the last two podcasts I've mentioned it.
But this non committal experimentation is such freedom for so many people, me included, because I'm like, I am going to experiment.
I am giving myself permission to learn.
And if I learn that something I tried is not good and doesn't work, I count that as learning.
And I'm like, okay, I know something now that I didn't know before.
And then by the time I make my list, out, my make my plan for how to actually finish this project, I am a different person.
And my perspective on this overwhelming project is completely different.
I know what I'm dealing with.
I have actual in front of me.
I know for a fact what some things that do work and some things that don't work.
And this project is so much smaller than it was way back here before I even looked.
It's so much smaller because I did the easy stuff.
And so many times there are things I know I have to do.
And so if I will go ahead and do those things, I am ready to make my plan after I do those things, but it feels efficient to make my plan first.
But if you're facing an overwhelming situation, whether that be clutter, whether that be, you know, a career thing, whatever it is, if you're facing an overwhelming situation and you say, what I need to do is sit down and make a plan, I wanna ask you this.
Have you ever done that before?
Have you ever made a plan and then lost that plan that you made?
Have you ever started to make a plan and then got so overwhelmed?
That you stopped making the plan.
Because if it's something that's been weighing you on you for a long time that you've been procrastinating on for a long time, there is a pretty decent chance.
But this is not the first time you've thought about making a plan.
Whether it's in your head, you're making a plan or on paper, you're making a plan or on a big old Trello board that you're making a plan.
So there's a lot you can do before you ever make a plan.
And the good news is so many things that felt overwhelming.
I'm actually done with by steps one through three.
Like, I'm done.
All I needed to do was face it head on, do the easy stuff, keep doing the easy stuff and noncommittally experiment, and then all of a sudden I'm done.
But even when you don't, even when that doesn't finish everything, you are in such a better position to create an actual efficient plan because you already know what is effective and what's not effective.
好的。
Okay.
So efficiency as an obsession tends to backfire for us.
If you are resisting take it there now in the name of efficiency, you need to assess the actual effectiveness of doing it the way that you've been doing it.
Do you end up with the bigger mess that I talk about?
That's the reason it's called the no mess decluttering process.
Do you end up having to remake decisions?
Do you get frustrated at the idea of having to remake decisions because you forgot what the decision was before because it's been so long since you got overwhelmed?
Well, and now you're back to this project and you're in this situation and you have to remake that decision and you just go, oh, who cares?
And you shove it all back in.
Assess the efficiency according to the effectiveness of what you have already done.
And if it is not effective, it's if it's not actually making your house easier to manage.
Then it's not efficient.
Even if the idea of it on paper feels like it should be efficient.
好的。
Okay.
好的。
Alright.
I hope that was helpful.
I hope it makes sense.
And I hope you feel understood.
Like, my goal is not to be like, hey, you're not being efficient.
That's not my goal.
It's never my goal.
My goal is to say, I get it.
I fought against this forever.
Here's the other thing too.
One of the things that said about energy.
What does say?
Efficiency means producing a desired result.
对。
Okay.
So am I getting the results or not of doing work with the least amount of waste?
I don't wanna waste time, expense, effort, or time.
Value your emotional energy.
I understand that physical energy is limited.
Physical time or time is limited.
But value your emotional energy.
Value the decision free steps.
With decluttering, it's trash, and we're not talking about anything that requires a decision.
We're saying stuff we already know is trash.
We're saying easy stuff that I already know what to do with doesn't require a decision.
Obvious donations are obvious donations that don't require a decision.
If you don't have anything that doesn't require a decision, then you move on to the next step.
But eliminating as many things as you can that don't require a decision honors the fact that emotional energy.
Is a precious commodity.
And being efficient being protective of your emotional energy, the best way to do that.
Is to go ahead and do anything that doesn't require a decision, but also doing the things that don't require a decision.
Means you've started.
It means that the overall thing that overwhelmed you is now significantly smaller, which then requires less emotional energy to then get it done.
It feels like the answer.
Is to work myself up to work as fast as possible.
But when that feels like the answer, okay, last time I worked as fast as possible, I didn't actually make real progress because I ended up worse than I was before.
So this time I'm going to work myself up to be even to put even more fastness into this.
And I think I'm going to do that.
But then the problem is it takes a lot of effort to work up all that energy, right?
Like, I'm going to really work myself up.
But then I spend a lot of time thinking about or wishing I could or trying to work myself up and the working myself up isn't actually doing anything.
It's not being affected.
Nothing is happening as I'm trying to work myself up.
If I will say instead of working myself up, I'm going do the things I don't have to work myself up for.
Then things are done.
That's effective.
That's actually more efficient.
好的。
Okay.
I hope this was helpful, and I will talk to y'all next week.
再见。
Bye.
好的。
Okay.
Now that the main podcast is over, I am going to share all the details like the behind the scenes stuff about why preorders matter so much.
So I'm actually putting this at the end of all of my podcasts for this preorder period in September and very beginning of October.
So it's possible you've heard this before.
And if you have, just skip it.
好的。
Okay.
Here goes.
I am not going to introduce myself because if you are here, you're one of my people.
So I am giving behind the scenes on why preorders matter.
I just want to be clear.
I don't view what I'm doing right now as a sales thing.
I'm really wanting to just talk to those of you who already know that you're going to get the book eventually.
Maybe you've read my other books.
Maybe you've heard me talk about procrastination or you just you're like, no, Dana gets me.
This is a subject that I want to hear from her on.
If you already know that, what I'm doing right now is just trying to help you understand why I push for pre orders so hard and how they'll be helpful, not just to you or to me, but hopefully for the community of people who exist, who need to have their unique brain type understood and honored, and they need the help.
I'm going to explain how it is that preorders have a huge effect on.
How many people a book ultimately reaches.
好的。
Okay.
行。
All right.
So first, I want to just be clear that I'm not delusional.
I am I'm sure I'm delusional about some things, but these are some things I'm not delusional about.
Number one, I know.
That getting preorders on any book is hard.
This is my sixth book, including my children's book.
I know that getting procrastinators to preorder a book is an extra huge challenge.
I mean, I feel like this book is written to my core audience.
So all the other times that I've been trying to get preorders, I've been talking to procrastinators.
I know that hitting a bestseller list, which I'm going to talk about in this time together, is a huge reach.
Like, it is.
Probably not gonna happen.
I know this.
This is my sixth book.
I know how this goes.
Okay?
I'm not delusional about that.
I know that an author can do everything she can do, Can get huge preorder numbers that.
Totally feel like they should make the list and then not make the list still, like there is literally no way to control it.
This is actually my biggest pet peeve as an author is when people try to explain that to me.
Well, you know that even if you got huge preorder, I know.
Literally can't stand it when people try to explain that to me.
I know that asking or begging for preorders is annoying.
Don't worry.
I totally know.
Okay, so I've got a lot of words.
This is my second time to record this.
I'm going to try not to stop for any reason.
I'm just going to keep on going even when I mess up.
I'm gonna try to go a little faster because last time it took me thirty six minutes and I don't think you want to listen for thirty six minutes.
So let's talk.
One reason that procrastinators procrastinate is because we don't feel like we have all the information that we need.
We don't know everything.
We don't know exactly how to do the thing.
We don't exactly know why the thing matters.
And so we wait thinking, I'm going to wait until I know and understand more.
And then a lot of times the opportunity passes us by and we don't get to do the thing at all because we never got to this point where we understood enough and then we think, I wish I would have just done it anyway, because a lot of times we understand after it's over.
So that's my goal here is to give you all this information because I know how the brains of procrastinators work because I am a procrastinator.
So I want to give you all the information so that you're not lacking any.
That's not the reason that you procrastinate on ordering or pre ordering.
First of all, let me just be clear.
Do you need this book?
If you do not need this book, I do not want you to buy it.
If you can't afford this book, I don't want you to to buy it.
Ask your library to order it.
That's a huge way to help as well.
For the past sixteen years, I've been writing about decluttering and home management.
Now I'm writing about procrastination because I realized I've been writing about procrastination all along.
I know how to teach people how to face overwhelming situations.
And identify.
What they can do to get started.
I know how to teach people how to keep going until they finish.
These are my areas of expertise.
I have now put that into a an anti procrastination process, if you already know my no mess decluttering process.
And it works for you, you're going to love the anti procrastination process because it can be applied to any situation that overwhelms you, not just clutter.
Okay, how does it benefit you to preorder?
Well, I don't like to ask for anything without giving something in return.
And so if you're going to preorder, you immediately get the first chapter of the book delivered via email.
You're also going to get access to four strategy sessions that I did with people who've already read the entire book, where we talk through their unique situation where they're procrastinating and I help them apply my five step anti procrastination process to that situation.
Okay, you can either listen to these or watch them on video or read the transcripts.
Okay, so that's another thing you get as a preorder bonus.
The other thing that you're gonna get is you get to be part of a live book club that will start once the book is released.
So for four weeks, we'll meet, you can ask questions, we'll talk through the book, and that will be available to you to watch the recordings of for the entire month of October and November.
So like once those come out, you'll have through the end of November to watch those, and you'll have access to that.
So that that's what you get for pre ordering.
顺便说一下,要获得这些福利的唯一方式就是填写danak.white.com/procrastinate上的表格。
Just so you know, the only way to get those things is to fill out the form at danak.white.com/procrastinate.
Okay?
The the people selling you the books, they don't know anything about these bonuses.
The They're not gonna be the one sending them to you.
You're only gonna get them when you come to my page, dannykwhite.com/procrastinate, and fill out the form telling us, hey, I pre ordered this book, here's my order number, And then we'll send you those items.
What are those four sessions?
And one of them, I talk with someone who has the daunting task of moving a loved one into assisted living, an assisted living facility.
Like she hasn't even started yet.
Like it's just this huge daunting task that's overwhelming.
So we talk through the anti procrastination process, what that looks like, how to get going on this task.
Another one is somebody who has been wanting to finish a quilt for three years.
I think we can all relate to that, right?
Another one is someone who's changed careers and has retirement accounts at the old career and needs to move them into a new, you know, a new a new account.
And then I talk with someone who has over 30,000 photos from a really special time of life, and they're on different hard drives and different thumb drives, and she wants to bring them together, print them out so that she can actually show them to her son while he's still young enough to want to sit with her and look through all of these photos.
And these are overwhelming situations.
I am not there to say, Oh, do this, this, this, and this, and you're done.
No, no, no.
I'm there to say, here's how you apply the anti procrastination process to your situation.
So whether you have those situations or others, you're going to learn how to start changing your thinking around procrastination.
好的。
Okay.
And so that you'll be able to apply the process to your situation when you read the book.
Why am I pushing so hard for preorders?
I want you to think back to the moment when you realized you were not alone in your struggles to maintain your home.
I want you to think about how it felt to realize, oh, there are other people like me.
I am not the only one whose brain works like this and there's actually hope.
That's what I want to happen.
For people whose brains are like ours.
Who might never go looking for information on decluttering and then find, oh, there are people out there whose brains work like mine, but they will go looking for information on procrastination.
Okay, so I want to get the word out.
The reality is that when I just say, hey, this is how I talk about procrastination, the people who are booking podcasts, booking shows, writing about me in articles and stuff, if I was just saying, hey, I talk about progress, I talk about decluttering differently than other people.
They'd be like, different?
Oh, different is scary because we want people to like this.
And what if they don't like that?
Because what you're saying is different.
We know how helpful it is to talk about this stuff differently.
But the people booking publicity don't.
It makes them scared, right?
So the thing that makes them realize, oh, this is something people want to hear is the success of.
The method, right?
Like like the fact that Decluttering at the Speed of Life has sold so many copies, the fact that y'all talk about it, the fact that we have numbers out there of people talking about this method works for me, that gives it credibility.
Okay, so I want to build that for procrastination as well.
And the very best way to build credibility.
Is hitting a bestseller list.
It's a way to very quickly build credibility so that we can get the word out.
A bestseller list.
I've hit The Wall Street Journal years ago on some random weird week when my ebook ebook sold like crazy and they had a list that actually went for that ebooks.
And I think I've hit Publishers Weekly, maybe for organizing for the rest of us.
But we all know what the big list is, The New York Times best seller list.
Again, I'm not delusional.
I'm not delusional.
But also, if we don't talk about it, then you don't know.
Oh, that's how this could be beneficial.
Hitting The New York Times best seller list automatically lends credibility.
Any bestseller list, but specifically that one.
It's really hard for me to say bestseller, just so you know.
That list automatically catches the attention of people who are like, we need a procrastination expert to talk about this.
Oh, this person has a book about procrastination that has hit the list.
They see that and they automatically know this is a subject people want to hear about.
And this is a person who they want to hear it from.
That automatic credibility is incredibly valuable in spreading the word so that more people know there is hope.
Oh, there is a way to work with my brain instead of against it.
So how does a book hit the best seller list?
Here's the thing people don't understand that I didn't used to understand.
Most people don't understand.
Best seller lists are based on one week's worth of sales.
Cumulative sales over time do not matter.
It is one rush gush of sales in one week.
That is what the seller lists are based on.
好的。
Okay.
The reason pre orders matter so much.
Is that, you know, we're talking about this a month before the book comes out.
Every preorder that this book has.
Because the book hasn't actually come out yet, those preorders count as sales for the first week that the book comes out.
So it's a way to get a huge number for that first week, which then gives the possibility that it could hit a best seller list.
Okay?
Cumulative sales don't matter.
Decluttering at the Speed of Life has sold over half a million copies in eight years.
I'm just going to tell you a lot of books that have hit The New York Times best seller list have not and will not sell 500,000 copies in their lifetime.
That is a huge number of copies, compared to Theo of Golden.
But like it is a huge number of sales for a book.
But it doesn't matter for an actual list.
And that book has never hit The New York Times bestseller list because it's never sold a huge number in one single week.
Okay.
So therefore, it doesn't have the automatic credibility that the little this is a New York Times bestseller would give it.
好。
Okay.
So that's why we push so hard for pre orders, because that is the only way to get a big rush of sales in that first week.
Okay, which gives it the chance once it's on the list, it automatically reaches more people because it's on the list and therefore has the potential to continue selling more in future weeks.
But that's the way that's the reason that authors push preorders.
Okay, the other reason, the most basic reason why we push preorders is that.
Preorder numbers.
Are the things that booksellers and publishers use to decide how many books to put in their stores and how many books to print.
Like that.
That's the most basic reason.
Yes, we would love to hit a list, but also showing that people care about this subject matter and want to hear about it from this author.
That is what determines how many books even go through the printing process and they have to go through the printing process to and they have to be ordered by bookstores to then be available for the book to gain momentum and reach more people.
Okay, so that's what they have to look at.
They have actual preorder numbers to look at.
They're not guessing.
This is business.
It's also the container concept.
They only have so much room on their shelves and they are going to put the things on their shelves that they most believe, not just in their heart, but actually according to numbers, are going to be the books that people are actually going to buy.
Okay, so that's another reason that preorders are so important.
对。
Okay.
Also, it only takes one week to be a New York Times best selling author forever.
That's why we push so much into these pre orders is for that first week of sales.
明白。
Okay.
So what numbers are we going for?
Numbers are ambiguous on purpose.
The goal is that nobody game the system.
I don't want to game the system.
Please don't buy this book if you don't need it.
Okay?
But what are the numbers that we know?
They used to say 7,000.
I now sometimes hear 10,000.
But realistically, there's not any way to know because it depends on what other books come out that week, how well other books that have existed for a long time do that week.
It really is not something that you can know an exact number.
But we have a general number in our head of like, okay, if I'm going to have a chance, I need to aim for at least 10,000 at the very least to be sold in that first week.
Okay?
Other thing to know is that specifically the New York Times bestseller list is curated.
Books have to sell an impressive number of books to even be considered, but ultimately, you could sell bajillions of books and not be on the list because it is a list where the books are picked to be on there.
They have to earn their place, but it is a curated list.
Okay?
That's how this works.
I also know that because I have never hit the list before, and I'm an author who has a lot of books out there, that I'm not on their Authors to Watch list.
If you Google exciting non fiction books coming out in October 2026, my name is not going be on there.
It might be exciting to you, but it does not have the attention out there.
So we have to have a very impressive number of books to even have a chance.
Again, I'm not expecting to hit it, but I got to at least try.
好的。
All right.
And then I'm gonna tell you about what I think is my biggest challenge, honestly.
And I'm not complaining, and I would not change anything.
I would do again what I'm about to tell you is the thing that I did that has caused this biggest challenge, I believe.
My last book was the book of my heart.
It was Jesus doesn't care about your messy house.
It was spiritually focused, and I knew that that could have a negative effect on my career because my career is built on not spiritually focused content.
So I went into it knowing this could negatively affect my career.
Honestly, I would say until about six months ago, I was like, I don't think it's negatively affected my career.
Like, I don't People have been really great about it.
It's had a great reception from the people who've read it.
It hasn't sold that great, but that's what I expected.
And then I realized, oh, this is how it negatively affects my career is that bookstores and honestly, publishers choosing how many they're going to print.
The most logical thing for them to look at.
Is the sales numbers from my last book.
Like, well, this is how many people bought her last book, so those are the numbers that we have to go on for how many to print or how many booksellers are going to order for the next book to keep in their store.
But that book only appealed to a very small fraction of my audience.
I know that this book.
Is literally for every single person who has said her brain works like mine.
You need procrastinators get stuff done.
If you think that when you listen to me or you hear me or you read my books.
But the numbers on the paper don't show that.
So that's a legitimate challenge.
One that I am fine with.
But it means I need major preorder numbers to fight that.
To make people bookstores things take notice.
It just is what it is.
好的。
Okay.
Wouldn't change a thing.
好的。
Okay.
So let's talk about how this book being successful would help you because yeah, You.
Like, you wanted to help you.
好的。
Okay.
I want you to think about how much being understood was part of your own Change process, like not only seeing, oh, she understands me, but also, oh, she understands me.
And there are thousands of other people saying that their brain works the way that she says her brain works.
And you start to feel like, oh, I'm not broken.
I'm not alone.
Okay, yeah.
That's what I want to happen.
On this subject of procrastination, I'm going to talk a lot, I do talk a lot in the book about how our brain works and how the things we're great at and how that sometimes ends up backfiring into procrastination and causing problems.
所以,
So that.
Is what I want to provide to create a community and create a language around procrastination to where we don't have to feel like this stuff that goes on in my head.
No, let's make that part of the conversation.
If this book could take off and get the traction that it I believe it deserves.
It could help so many more people.
Now, let's get into some nitty gritty here.
Does it matter where you order?
Yes and no.
Okay, I want you to order wherever it works for you.
Okay, like wherever you already buy books, that's where I want you to order.
But if you are like, I could order it from the place where everybody orders or I could order it from the smaller bookseller, choose the smaller one just because that's going to help them and we want to do that.
But also it is something that is looked for like variety.
We don't want to they're watching to make sure that nobody's trying to game the system.
So order from the place you want to order.
But if it's a choice between two, go with the one that's gonna be a little more unique of a place to order.
But don't let that hold you back from ordering.
I would rather you order from the place that's easiest than think, oh, I need to do the most ideal thing and then not actually preorder.
You'll learn about that in the book.
好的。
Okay.
Does it matter what format you order?
This is the one that I actually hate to say.
Just to be clear, you will get the preorder bonuses for any format that you order and any format that you preorder is helpful.
It is.
But does it matter which format?
It actually does.
Best seller lists, the majority of them are based on physical copies.
Also, physical copies being preordered is what affects how many get put in bookstores.
Physical copies being preordered affects how many are printed.
Physical copies are the riskiest ones for the publisher and for the booksellers.
So preordering physical copies is what gives them that confidence to take that risk.
So if you only listen to audiobooks, order the audiobook.
If you only read on your e reader, I love my e reader.
Order the digital copy.
But if you are one of the many people who tell me that you ultimately order all three formats because you like to be able to listen to it, you wanna have it on the go, and you wanna be able to mark it out, then I would ask if you know you're already gonna eventually order the physical copy, I would ask that you preorder the physical copy because that is helpful.
Okay, so let's talk I know I'm getting to twenty six minutes here.
Maybe it is what it is.
How close have my other books gotten to hitting a bestseller list?
I wanna do this as a perspective.
Okay?
Because I know that when people say, oh, she's got almost 250,000 followers on subscribers on YouTube.
I'll bet you half of those people preorder her book.
不。
No.
If half of those people preordered my book, I would break all kinds of records.
But how many do?
A very tiny fraction of that.
So I'm going to tell you what my numbers are as best as I know because I don't know exact and perfect.
But from the things that I'm able to see and what publishers are able to tell me, this is how many physical copies, which is the thing that has the most effect on bestseller lists, physical copies of my other books were either pre ordered or ordered in the first week.
So this was one week's worth of sales, which is the thing that matters for the lists.
The biggest one week worth of sales because it was the preorder plus the first week of my previous books.
How to manage your home without losing your mind came out in 2016.
That was my first book.
I had nine seventy pre orders of physical copies.
Decluttering at the Speed of Life came out in 2018, about a year and a half later.
That one had 2,167 copies of physical copies ordered of that.
Organizing for the rest of us, which is one that people tend to want to get in physical because it has a lot of pictures in it.
3,200 physical copies of that book were pre ordered or ordered in the first week.
And then Jesus Doesn't Care About Your Messy House.
1,711.
That's that's what we're up against.
We would need to sell.
Five times as many.
We would need to have pre orders or first week of sales.
Five times as many for.
As we did with decluttering at the speed of life.
To even have a chance of hitting a big list.
好的。
Okay.
I know it's a huge goal.
I know it's not super realistic.
However, I'm gonna ask because that's what we're here doing and you're still listening.
So I might as well, right?
Just see that like if 4% of my YouTube subscribers pre ordered we'd have a chance.
Or if 2% of the people who have gotten a copy of Decluttering at the Speed of Life pre ordered a physical copy.
We could do it.
Okay, I have a few more words.
